Well, I had my first aikido lesson today... and I loved it! It was wierd being an absolute beginner again and quite strange wearing a white belt again too. lol.

We did a lot of techniques, most of which I will have probably forgotten by tomorrow and as for practicing forward rolls...OUCH! I was never very good at them when I did them at school, which is about 8 years ago now, and I haven't done any since. Still, I'm sure my pathetic attempts kept the other aikidoka amused. :D

Aikido is always a good complement to a striking art, although some styles of Aikido, like Yoshinkan, are quite "combative" in their own right. I did Yoshinkan for six years in the '90s, and have been practicing once a week with a Tomiki group for the last few months. You may find that Aikido opens your eyes to a lot of techniques in Karate in a different way.

I think you made the right decision, aefibird and the statement above from equanimus couldn't be better. Especially when you like to reverse engineer katas you'll find a lot of use of the aikido lessons.

You will find irimi-nage in (among other places) Gojushiho-sho, Tekki Nidan, and Kanku-Dai. Just an example. It should also help your kumite as you become more proficient in Aikido, thanks to the emphasis on tai sabaki type movements. :karate:

Aikido is a good choise in my opinion. The falling thing takes time to master. Take care. Don't push yourself too much and try to make all the rolls in a correct manner, otherwise it would hurt A LOT :)

Oh yes, I know that the rolls hurt A LOT if not done properly!! lol

I'm loving the Aikido training that I'm doing and I can see the positive affedt that it has had on my karate already.

I did some rolls and falls and once i fell wrong. No need to say I've busted two ribs and feel pain whenever attempting another roll. I guess for now this part of MA training is over for me  Can't even bend properly.
