Tibby Posted October 26, 2003 Posted October 26, 2003 Both are good, but I would Pick Judo. Boxing, other then toughening you up, you learn one thing, to punch. Judo, not only will it toughen you up more, but you will learn a wider range of things to do. Standing work, ground work, things like that. On top of that, most Asian martial arts like Judo or Karate will teach a little Self-defense, even if it is just for posterity, but most Western Martial Arts, like Boxing or Wrestling, you just learn to fight, for sports. Now the down side, learning Judo takes time. You will not be able to throw someone after one class. You will, however, learn to punch properly from one boxing class. If you are in a rush to learn to fight, as in, you fear you are going to get killed next week if you don't learn to protect your self, Boxing would be better.
shotokanwarrior Posted October 27, 2003 Posted October 27, 2003 I would say judo but dont ignore boxing because you will need to know what it feels like to be hit because odds are you will be and it will not suprise you. Where Art ends, nature begins.
TJS Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 Boxing, other then toughening you up, you learn one thing, to punch. You forgot one thing, Boxing will also teach you how to not get punched, boxers have great footwork and head movement- not getting punched and being tough enough to shrug it off if you do is proabably one of the most important things you can learn in a street fight.
Treebranch Posted October 28, 2003 Posted October 28, 2003 Yeah, but they don't teach you not how to get kicked or how not get caught by a grappler. They also teach you how to bob and weave which is great for a boxing match, but terrible for a knife fight. Also it is better to move your whole body offline than just your upper body in a real situation, it's just safer. Also stepping on their feet when you get in close is a good idea as well, which Judo teaches. I think boxing is a great sport and they are some tough dudes, but they'd get eaten alive by a well rounded fighter. Guy_Mendiola Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 i would pick boxing and i would pick this style because you can be better in punching and i would also pick judo for maybe like grappling.
Treebranch Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 Kodokan Judo in its pure form is lethal. "It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.""Lock em out or Knock em out"
TJS Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 Kodokan Judo in its pure form is lethal. Although more sport oriented todays Judo Still has the potential to be lethal if taught correctly. Infact I read a story of a judo Blck belt killing a bank robber the other day. There is also the story of the German Juso guy killing the axe murderer in canada.
rb Posted November 19, 2003 Posted November 19, 2003 I'd say judo. On your feet it has excellent techniques to throw and offbalance an opponent. Groundwise it has good controlling holds, chokes and submissions. You also learn how to fall properly. Striking is also learned in the advanced stages. However many schools place empahsis on the sport where no striking is allowed. Also practice is done primarily in the judogi which is considerably stronger than t-shirts, sweaters, and jackets. Some gi-less practice would probably be a good idea.
1ONEfighting Posted November 20, 2003 Posted November 20, 2003 I've done both. If you want to remember your childhood in 20 years, do Judo. Trainwreck Tiemeyerwishes he was R. Lee Ermey.
Coudo Posted November 22, 2003 Posted November 22, 2003 I've had experience in both... ofcourse I would say that judo can be more fun, learning moves and all that, but a real street fight (with someone who knows how to fight) isnt just about grappling (wrestling, judo style), its more about punching and evadeing punches. I've already chosen boxing, and just for the record, it takes about 2 months to learn the basics of boxing and then it takes about 1 year to learn how to box! Judo ofcourse is great and even though I think a boxer would win in a fight between them, this isnt about that. Boxers (despite what some seems to think) never ever lets anyone in close if they dont know if they will be hurt by that person. Chose boxing, if youre afraid of having to street fight then its the style for you.
