That is incorrect because I have been down this road. Among some of those that do teach publicly the USA, if you're curious try to find someone that learned (or has even seen) either Ohan or Paiho, not to mention any thing else. Ask questions. You'll be surprised. There are more kata that are contained in the system, various categories of martial strategy and technique, health and wellness practices and other "things" that make the system an obviously chinese based martial arts system, as opposed to a "style" of karate. There are techniques, waza, kobudo, and several sections of study that make the complete art of Ryueiryu that were not taught to members of his era by Nakaima Kenko Sensei. I actually spoke with highly regarded people who told me that Campbell actions speak for itself. He is the only fully licensed American and Bearer of the entire System. Research it, I also believed the way you did not to long ago.

Forms/Kata
troy replied to Jay's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I believe kata is a very important part of martial arts. Some may disagree with this sentiment but the true core to your martial arts is in the accurate applications involving stance, kicking, punching, and blocking. Here are some exceptional katas below...http://youtube.com/watch?v=H9UrMOPVHW4 -
I was told Mr.Campbell teaches Ryuei Ryu privately in The U.S.A. He could shed alot of light on this subject if I can reach out to him.. Found a great kata by him at this site http://youtube.com/watch?v=H9UrMOPVHW4

Ryuei-ryu is a very interesting style, but I have always been doubtful about its history. It is very hard to shift through what is true and what is fiction in any Okinawan karate style, but it seems more difficult with Ryuei-ryu. Aside from Sakumoto and his students, I have never seen any other Ryuei-ryu teachers demonstrate their kata or technique anywhere period. There are quite a few common kata between Goju-ryu and Ryuei-ryu. This is often attributed to the two styles potentially having the same teacher in China, Ru Ru Ko. That Ohan kata that I saw online I know for certain is a made up version.

I am interested in the kata as well. The problem is that from the clips I have seen online you can tell that their are people who are making up some of their own techniques in the katas.. The internet is not the best place to look for answers I am realizing more and more. Their are so many people taking credit and fooling people for their own gain. I wish we could go back to the old way of martial arts without the politics don't you agree?? Good luck on your search anyhow...

That is true Nago .. I found this in my search when I googled the style also Nago... Quote- There are relatively few schools of the Ryuei Ryu outside of Japan. Currently two groups that teach Ryuei Ryu in North America. One group, the Okinawa Ryuhokai, led by Tomohiro Arashiro of San Diego, California (an Okinawan that claims to have been taught while as enrolled as a middle school student for a few years in Okinawa) teaches a very popular sport based version of the art, modified for competitive situations by Tsuguo Sakumoto, a former student of Kenko Nakaima. The other group, led by Grant Campbell of New York City (practitioner of oriental medicine and a former international champion of both Kata and full contact Kumite), the Ryuei Ryu Karate Kobudo Association is a private organization that more closely maintains the original teachings of the Nakaima family. http://www.usakaratedo.com/grant.htm http://www.ryueiryu.com/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=6 I believe the timeline is inaccurate on the Ryuho Kai site. What do you think Nago ?? Thank you for your your input.. This site is kind of quiet..

I think that it is a very effective style and is full of powerful techniques just from watching the katas.

I am intrigued by this style and love the kata especially Ohan . I have seen a so called version on the internet but am unsure of its authenticity. There seems to be alot of mystery and unknowns about this system. I was curious as to whether anyone has more knowledge on this style to discuss further. Is this style active anywhere in the U.S. Thank you
