Hi all I was wondering why in the Shotokan syllabus (i have several books and have searched on the internet or the syllabus information)some grades you don't have to learn any more techniques, and for 2nd kyu 1st kyu and 1st dan there is no difference??? seems very strange why have the grades if you don't have to do anything for them, are they simply to increase the time before black?? Thanks

Hi i was just wondering what people thought of these 2 styles, and any insight they have on the diffrences or similarities, and if one of these style is better at certian areas. I do shotokan (SKA) my brother TKD (TAGB), and i am thinking of moving to TKD becuase they seem to have a greater variaty of kicks, unlike shotokan's front kick, side kick, roundhouse, back kick. Thanks

Hi A good defence against mid height round house kicks i learnt whilst doing kung fu is to, when you see the kick coming move as fast as you can towards the kicking leg, so that it hits you in the side of the chest, if you get there soon enough there should be no power there, and you wont get hurt, and it will also unbalance your opponent. Hope this helps

Question about testing
lufbrajames replied to DisgruntledGirl's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
As long as you know what you will be asked to do, and put in 100% effort you will be fine. Oh and whats days your test on? Good luck! -
Hi everyone My shotokan class has just had a visit from sensei Akita 5th Dan, he has really made me want to work harder, and his visit has shown me what can be achieved if you are determined. I was wondering if anyone has trained with him, or knows of any books/website with any info on him thanks all

Hi i have been going to Karate lessons for 2 weeks and will be getting my suit next week i hope. It comes free when you pay for the license, does this suggest it wont be good? is there anyway of telling how good it is when i get it? i've heard something about different weights? Thanks

Im not training with the uni club, there was to many people for my taste. The class im attending at the moment has between 10 - 20 at an average class. I am training under Senei Terry Corbett. http//:https://www.lelashotokan.org.uk Apparently Terry and Tom don't get along, i'm not sure why, do you know? Thanks for everybody input so far, im defiantly going to keep my knowledge of the soft blocks from kung-fu i think it will be very useful. James

Hi I am thinking of starting Kyokushin or Shotokan within the next few weeks and have been looking through the syllabus of varies Shotokan clubs in order to get a rough idea of what i will be learning. After looking through several clubs syllabus i noticed that there was not cresent kicks, is this normal for shotokan? Thanks

Awesome, i go the Loughborough Uni The Wado ryu club is a university club, is that the one you're referring to? Is the main difference between Kyokushin and Shotokan and Wado ryu? is it just the sparring being full contact? I think i am going to watch the club train this Thursday and get some more information from the instructor. James

Hi newbie here About 2 years ago i gave up martial arts due to an injury and didnt start back up after it was healed, the style that i used to study was sil lum kune (https://www.sli-lum-kune.com) i achieved Orange Sash. White Yellow Orange Green Red Blue Purple Brown Pre-black Black I had to grade to get my white sash wich i thought was a bit strange, anyway i want to know whether Kyokushin is right for me, there is a club in my town (https://www.loughboroughkarate.co.uk) I am really unfit at the moment, and wish to start martial arts again, there are Wydo Ryu and Shotokan clubs near as well i want a club that offers more than just fighting i want the mental side as well, also i want the opportunity to compete in competitions. I would also like to know a bit about the grading system. Also does anybody have any comments about the instructor? Sunil Tailor? Thanks
