I would like to point out that there is no Japanese word “gi” the correct usage is Keikoigi, Karategi, Judogi, Dogi, ect. The development of the modern practice uniform was created by Jigoro Kano the founder of Kodokan Judo. The concept of the modern Karategi is accredited to Gichin Funakoshi, in which he modified the Judogi , by using lighter material cotton than the heaver type of cotton used in the Judogi. By researching the historical photo records it is evident that in Karate the uniforms were all white. This is a reflection of Shinto tradition in which white represents purity, and of Japanese ascetics’ practices of simplicity of the enviroment. The traditional white Karategi , represents cleanliness and purity of thoughts, mind, actions, spirit. Another reason for the white Karategi , is that when one trains in Budo, a major goal is the confrontation the ego ( i.e. not to be egotistical) : by wearing a flamboyant uniform, it is sending a message that the individual is egocentric because they crave attention. In a proper Budo dojo the social or economic background of each member is not important, thus what is salient is to focus on the training in the discipline by this means, the plain white Karategi serves its purpose. The important tenets of Budo. 1: Jin (benevolence) 2: Gi (justice) 3: Rei (manners) 4: Chi (wisdom) 5: Shin (faithfulness, trustfulness)
  2. If anybody wants to learn the truth about the Juko Kai please read these posts. http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11130&highlight=JUKO+KAI http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11228&highlight=JUKO+KAI http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12646&highlight=JUKO+KAI http://www.e-budo.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=16614&highlight=JUKO+KAI Bottom line , the Juko Kai is fraudulent.
  3. To Bluedragon, If you are interested in studying Shotokan Karate, I can assist you in this endeavor, by teaching you Shotokan. If you are willing to travel to Erie, which I understand is not that far from where you live. As far as I know, I am the only individual in the Erie, PA area that has a legitimate yudansha rank from a recognized organization in Japan (J.K.A- Nihon Karate Kyokai). I know that there are several schools and individuals that claim to teach Shotokan in North Western PA, but these are only what I refer to as “ Shotokan by the book”. What I mean by this statement is that their supposed Shotokan is derived from books, in which their waza(technique) lacks in proper body dynamics, weak kihon, kata that is very stiff, and no understanding of bio-mechanics, or Sen no Sen, Go no Sen, Tai Sabaki, Zashin ect. If you are interested in studying Aikido here is a list of the authentic Aikido schools in our area of the country that I know of. Three Rivers Aikikai Pittsburgh PA 412-278-0919 Keystone Ki Aikido W Elizabeth, PA 724-348-9122 New Castle Aikikai, New Castle, PA 412-652-6471 Pittsburgh Yoseikan Aikido Pittsurgh,PA 412-344-2232 Aikido of Shaker Hts Willoughby OH, 440-918-0810 Mushin Dojo, Cleveland Hts,OH 216-751-5984 For the record, I do not believe that the J.K.A. is the only source of authentic Shotokan. I have great respect for the Shotokai and the other J.K.A derivatives which can be found at http://www.shotokanworld.com/intlorg.htm It should be simple, to study and train in authentic Shotokan , you should be able to trace your linage back to the founder, Funakoshi Gichin Sensei. The best book to read on history of Shotokan is “ Shotokan a Precise History “ by Harry Cook. Bluedragon, you can contact me at 814-825-2640 Ken.
  4. To quote Bluedragon. “I practice an art called Goshin Jutsu Karate. Its a combo, hybrid you might say, but I like it. Have elements of shotokan, aiki jitsu, and aikido in it. Lately some grappling has started to emerge. Very adaptable system that allows what works into it. ‘ First I would like to state, as a member of the Nihon Karate Kyokai ( J.K.A) Shotokan,( also Okinawna Goju Ryu-Shobukan and Ryukyu Tuite JUtsu, Kyusho Jutsu) I can unequivocally state that ‘ goshin jutsu kyo jujo’ has absolutely no technical or .historical, connection to Shotokan or any other style of Japanese or Okanawan Karate or Budo.In this ‘goshin jutsu kyo jujo’ there are no Karate kata taught, just a number of forms made up in Erie,Pa by the individual who started it. Second point, All Aiki Jujutsu is derived from Takada Sokaku , the founder of Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu. There is no historical or contemporize connection of authentic Aiki Jujtsu from Japan to any individual past or present in ‘ goshin jutsu kyo jujo’. I contacted via e-mail Stanley Pranin the editor of the Aikido Journal and asked him if he had any knowledge of Jerry Durant ( founder of goshin jutsu kyo jujo) .Mr Pranin stated that he had never heard of Jerry Durant. Rational I would believe Mr Pranin the leading authority on the Aiki martial disciplines outside of Japan, than a group of simple minded cult-like followers. Third point, again the claim that ‘ goshin jutsu kyo jujo’ has elements of Aikido is a false claim, again review Mr Pranin’s statement. Also while attending Penn State Unv, I studied Aikido at the college Aikido Club( Shin Shin Taiso Aikido ) .I can stated that ‘ goshin jutsu kyo jujo’ has no Aikido waza in its curriculum just a small number of poorly executed arm bars, wristlocks and throws, which does not constitute authentic Aikido. I understand that some individuals often get upset over this type of response, but then I ask? What has happened to the concepts of honesty, standards, and truthfulness? Below is a quote from other dissussion web-page which explains this common situation found here in North America. “ 1) Ellis pointed out to me in Las Vegas at our Budo video screening that teachers that are generally considered "fake" will always have a following, because people are attracted to budo for different reasons and there is a type of student who is looking for this. After some concideration, I believe that there are, in the broadest sense, three basic types of budo student - those looking to live a fantasy (role playing), those interested in budo and the related culture in general, and those looking for practical combative methods for application professionally. There is definitely a type of student that becomes emotionally defensive when presented with doubt or contrary facts - much like some people get when their faith in religion is questioned or debated. I believe this is because they are operating on faith, and perhaps, a blinded desire to participate in a fantasy that cannot be argued as real using logical or factual reasoning. In other words, for some types of students, this type of thing is exactly what they are looking for, and they may not "need to be saved" by us - whether they dream of being a samurai, ninja or shaolin monk. I may open up a thread about this subject soon if anyone is interested in analyzing this further. Nathan Scott “

  6. You can find those Kata by Tsunami video at http://www.dragon-tsunami.org/Tsunami/Pages/Thome.htm All their videos are demostrated by Okinawan and Japanese Karatekas. P.S click to " Champ Video " for Ryuei Ryu kata and More on Shi to Ryu Ken
  7. If an indivdual wishes to train in Authentic Aiki Jujutsu here in America, I would suggest contacting the " Aikido Journal" webpage. As far as I know only one indivdual in America has recived a Menkyo Kaiden in Aiki Jujutsu and he lives in Calfifornia. Ken

  10. To Quote Bluedragon1981 "My art is a karate art. It has kata yes, but it also has a lot of throws and Aiki locks, strikes, and armbars. So what would you call this. It is a hybrid. Has some grappling, striking and internal in it. Its core is karate so that is why it is considered karate." Bluedragon you do not train in Karate."goshin jutsu kyo jujo"is not a type, style, form,or entity of legitimate or authentic Karate. Their is no linage in " goshin jutsu kyo jujo" to either ,Shuri-Te,Tomari-Te or Naha-Te, or any individual or groups in Japan or Okinawan. Also "goshin jutsu kyo jujo" does not conform in any manner to the biomechanics found in REAL KARATE. There are no authentic Karate kata's in " goshin jutsu kyo jujo",therefore it can not be considered as a tradition/legitimate style of Karatedo. Also to the claim that you use Aiki wrist locks is unfounded. In fact what is taught in " goshin jutsu kyo jujo" is just generic type of wrist locks and arm-bars that will not work in a real life( violent) situation.Bluedragon1981 you and all the other 'goshinist' should have the courage to face the truth and be honest with yourselves and any students that entires into your schools. In other words stop living in a fantasy world and stop living in denial ,in which you perpetuate this cult-like mentality called 'goshin jutsu kyo jujo.Their is no valid historical evidence to support any claims made by you or anyone else in the Jerry Durant camp. Jerry Durant was just an individual who trained for about 6 months then floated around for a while then decided to promoted himself to the status of a Black-Belt, end of story. Their is also a very antiintellual mentality within "goshin jutsu kyo jujo" I have never met any goshinist who has read any of the literature concerning the History, Culture, and Nomenclature of the Asian martial traditions.I find it very interesting that these goshinist who claim to be " masters of the martial arts" know absolutely nothing about the essences of Asian martial culture. If you wish to learn about Karatedo and Budo I suggest you should start by reading. 1. Okinawan Karate by Mark Bishop 2. Any of the books by Donn Draeger. 3. 11. Student to Teacher. There is a long standing conviction that there "are no bad students just bad teacher". What often is the salient point missed in this bit of wisdom is that at one time the teacher was a student himself/herself. The question I ask is, at what point is the student responsible in understanding if they are being taught from a teacher who is legitimate in his/hers claims to their backgrounds in any given martial traditions. For example , if a individual is claiming to teach authentic Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu ( i,e trained and certificated in Japan ), when in the students training does it become a responsible for the student to comprehend if that individuals is truly a legitimate teacher of Daito Ryu Aiki Jujutsu ? In the same manner as a individual who claims to teach traditional Japanese or Okinawan Karate , but for some reason all the kata taught by this teacher are not found in any recognized Karate Ryu , style, organization, or not even known in Okinawa or Japan. At what point does the student have to take responsibility in understanding fully what they are being, taught and its history, valid or not valid. Is the student being taught authentic Japanese swordsmanship, or is the teacher presenting something pulled from video tapes and books? At some point in time the student will become a teacher or present themselves as a expert in a given discipline , so are they to become a victim of a fraud , or should they take reasonability for their own life and conduct their own research in determining if what they are being taught is accurate in the claims about their teacher's training background? ken allgeier

  13. Dear Bluedragon1981: 1. Do you have any concert evidence, in which you can categorically refute my research point by point? If so can you state it on this forum or at https://www.e-budo.com, since no goshinist has yet been able to refute any of my conclusions. Please do not state that my research is bogus and not offer any in depth rebuttal in a rational and intelligent manner. 2.If you had actually read those posts on E-Budo, you would have read that I was once a student (unfortunately) of Jerry Durant and later received a ' black-belt' from one of Durant's senior students Ralph Porfilo. I believe this gives me better than average validity to criticize Jerry Durant and his 'goshin jutsu,' which when compared to classical Karate and Budo, is worthless from my experiences. 3. The documents that you referred to as being " blacked out" were edited for a purpose. When I originally sent out the first set of documents, the name of Rolf Strom (a student of Matt Durant) was blacked out, because Rolf was still living here in America and since some individuals associated with Durant's 'goshin jutsu kyo jujo' have criminal records and are violent psychopaths, I was protecting Rolf from harassment, which is why I also blacked out my name and the name of the translator. But since all the controversy has been stated on E-Budo, all documents now have nothing blacked or blocked out. If Bluedragon1981, you want a current (nothing blacked out) copy of the documents, please send me your address and I will mail them to you. If you have the courage to find out the truth, I will send you a copy of the Durant goshin jutsu tape also. 4. Bluedragon1981, can you explain why a number of individuals who have either seen the Video tape/documents or just looked at the different ' Durant-goshin jutsu ' webpages have come to the same conclusions. "I can state that after viewing them I now have no doubts from what I have seen that Gerard Durant not only never studied in Japan, but never studied with a Japanese teacher in ANY art, or obtained sho-dan from any teacher in any system, in or outside of the U.S.. IF Durant studied in Japan, obtained rank in a legit Japanese art, he would have something authentic to tie him to a teacher or organization that could verify this...a picture, a certificate with a full signature that could be checked against the org's records in Japan, another legit person to verify claims. But not only are there no pictures or films of him with anyone related to authentic Japanese martial arts (be they Japanese, American, or Canadian), but there are NO legitimate certificates that can back up the Durant camp's claims of lineage legitimacy. As a matter of fact, the existence of phony certs with dubious kanji, katakana, misused hiragana, misunderstanding of Japanese dates, non-existant Japanese names and so on, only seem to confirm that no Japanese person, and no person with any understanding ofthe Japanese Language had anything to do with Durant's training or the development of his unique martial art, Goshin Jutsu Karate. From the evidence presented, I have to agree with the conclusion of Ken Allgeier, who had the advantage of meeting and studying with the people who ran this organization when he was an inside member of this group and got to observe its workings and ethos first hand. Gerard Durant apparently had a habit of being untruthful about his training, and all evidence and accounts suggest that he created his own martial art with a minimum of training for a very short period of time, never passing beyond blue belt. Through the cult of personality, he was eventually able to convince people, many of whom were ignorant at the time of what karate was, to study with him and take his version of events as fact. The sincere students at that time did not question doubtful tales and certificates--they had nothing to compare them to and did not have a deep background in Japanese martial arts." M.C . Busman Here is the e-mail I received from Don Cunningham on the subject of the Jerry Durant & goshin jutsu kyo jujo tape. Hi Ken, Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I have viewed most of the tape and reviewed the documents you sent. (I couldn't stand to watch too much at atime.)This was almost too unbelievable. It was like a comedy skit about martial arts. I had to keep reminding myself that some people have taken this stuff seriously. I can't begin to understand the mentality of those who did, but I guess some people will see whatever they want instead of what is so obviously a fraud.,,, As for the videotape, the deragatory remarks made by Durant during the demonstration in the shopping mall certainly present a negative image. His need to constantly draw attention to his self-imposed status indicates an immaturity that I found quite distasteful. I thought he was supposed to be some sort of grandmaster? I have never seen any Japanese budoka of his age and position act in such an outrageous and vain manner. Why would anyone follow someone who behaves as such a clown is beyond my comprehension.,,, His description of grappling and throwing techniques was absolutely ridiculous. He never referenced or used any kuzushi (off-balancing), an aspect considered absolutely critical in all major styles of Japanese jujutsu and judo. I've heard others state that Durant's techniques were effective, but I can not believe this is possible after watching his teaching techniques. As a judoka, I can state without any doubt that a throw which does not first utilize kuzushi will not be effective without a extremely cooperative uke or partner. Anyone who claims these techniques worked in actual encounters has absolutely no credibility, in my opinion, since it is next to impossible to throw a resisting opponent without first setting them up with kuzushi.,,,,, Overall, I am surprised that anyone with the least bit of experience in any real martial arts style would believe this guy is anything but a complete fraud and egomaniac. Even without the hillbilly accent and manners, I would have trouble accepting something as ridiculous as shown on this videotape. That many apparently did respect and believe in this idiot is very frightening to me. Of course, the ones shown as his senior students and followers on this tape didn't seem to have much common sense or education in the first place. I guess it is conceivable that they may have been mislead without anything legitimate to compare it to. In this case, ignorance may be an temporary excuse, but to maintain belief in this "system" in light of so many other factors is just plain stupidity." Don Cunningham "As far as Mr. Durants "History", I checked in Japan and agree with Ken. The stuff thats on that tape and written about lineage is bogus. Since I didn't write it nor say it and the person who did is dead, there's not much more that I can do to retrack it " Carl McClafferty ( who recived his godan from Matt Durant on 01/20/99) http://www.usibsa.com/sensei.html 4. Bluedragon1981, can you state or explain the following, since you have publicly stated that you have done your own research into the background of Jerry Durant and 'goshin jutsu kyo jujo'. A) Who were Jerry Durant's teachers and where did he study ? B) Why are their no authentc/legitimate Karate kata's taught within the curriculum of Durant's goshin jutsu? C) What lineage from Okinawa is Durant's goshin jutsu based on: Shuri-Te, Tomari-Te or Naha-Te ? D) Durant's followers claim that they were taught Aiki Jujutsu from Jerry Durant. So from which Daito Ryu-Ha Aiki Jujutsu did Durant receive his "Kyoju Dairi" from? E) There is also a claim that Jerry Durant studied and taught Nihon Jujutsu. So from which Jujutsu Ryu did Jerrry Durant train in? F) Can you explain why Jerry Durant is being parodied at this webpage- http://xeroth.org/pcults_stories/durant.html Thank You, Ken Allgeier
  14. Kenneth Allgeier The truth about Jerry Durant is that. He was a charlatan, fake and a fraud, a pioneer of " Bad Budo " , and a criminal.
