  1. Sounds like you did a good job. You covered lots of stuff, showing your range of coverage as far as arts go. One suggestion is to get a guinea pig, and have him to demonstrate self-defense. Toss him around on a mat a little, people dig that.
  2. Whatever kata you decide to do, take it apart, break it down, and make sure you feel confident with it. If you have good technique, then you should be able to take either one. Just make sure you have the intracies of it down. Good luck to you!
  3. I always enjoyed doing forms. But, I sometimes wondered why some moves were the way they were. Now I know that I need to study it deeper to really see what they mean.
  4. HEY, HEY, just take it easy, man......slowly.....now breath. There ya go. See now? All better.
  5. Good luck!
  6. This sounds like a great idea. Do you do things like bunkai and stuff? Or does it just depend on the course?
  7. I have the opposite problem. Too little control. Somehow, I am really trying to have control but I just tend to snap out of it. I guess this would be a topic for another thread, but maybe any of you has similar experiences and can tell me what you have done about it without sacrificing power/distance/speed? This just comes with time. Slow down a little, and have your partner slow down too. Then do a faster match. It will come, don't worry.
  8. Well, sometimes when you throw a counter, but pull it a little, and the other person doesn't realize you could have taken their head off, so they don't respect it. Also, getting close, but not connecting.
  9. Nice post. I don't know why, but I have always found interest in the Indonesian/Phillipene styles. Especially the stick fighting styles.
  10. You have to understand, that I don't think God intended to lay everything out in the Bible. There will be holes in spots, or things not mentioned. Heck, they just found some more scriptures, The Gospel According to Judas. Who knows what they have not found, yet.
  11. Yeah, that I need work on.
  12. Sometimes, I have gas at class. I have gas a lot, though. The secret is trying to slip them out quietly. Do that in a sparring ring, and see if the person notices. Then POUNCE!
  13. That's great news, Sohan. Glad we could help.
  14. Yes, congratulations on the 1000th post! You always have good info. I feel like we have a good group of regulars hanging out here, and it is always fun to see everyone's replys. The banter is exceptional! I have enjoyed this forum so much, and have made some very good contacts, and dare I say, some friends, off of this site. The feeling of comaraderie is great (did I spell that right?).
  15. You guys are gonna make me blush....
  16. We used to do it kind of like this in our old school in my hometown. It is always tough workout, sitting in stances while the instructor explains things. Good workout, because you get used to doing everything in a flowing manner, and not slowing down. I was always sore after those workouts!
  17. The orientation is a half hour class, where it is just the student/students that are new, one on one with the instructor.
  18. In the Bible, where it states to make a "joyful noise" unto the Lord, they wrote that one in there for people like me.
  19. Best of luck to you, kammasandsais. (Parkerlineage, you sarcastic fool, you! )
  20. Well, you inform the parent that the child will advance when you feel that he/she is ready. As for the left/right, and not paying attention: left and right will come with drills. I like to take to square pads, one red and one black, and designate a side to each (red is left/black is right). Hold them behind your back, and flash one out. The child strikes with the appropriate side. Have them start with hand strikes, and then work in kicks, and then speed it up to get combos going. As for paying attention, switch drills about every 8 to 10 minutes. This will help get around that short attention span. Parkerlineage: As for the private lesson, assign homework for the child. Draw up a sheet on exell on the PC, with certain things to work on, like stances and kicks. Have the parent initial them as he does them. Not too much, but not too little either. Make sure you keep the parents honest about it as well. Little things like stances, and reps of kicks and strikes. See how that goes. Best of luck!
  21. My problem is that I am tone deaf. Couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.
  22. I think this is both jeff5's and Tokkan's first set of posts, so welcome to KF!
