  1. If you're still looking in tampa, check out https://www.selfdefensetampa.com it's my school, let me know if you have any questions...
  2. Out of curiosity, where are you located?
  3. I'm psyched about this one, I've never seen a Gracie fight in UFC live (only on DVD...). So who do you think's got it? What about 59? Any Ortiz fans?
  4. I'm currently teaching for an agency. http://www.allamericanyouth.org 1) I've been training for 11 years and teaching for 5. I taught under my master instructor and then I decided to branch out on my own. Teaching for All American Youth was pretty much a middle point between teaching for someone and getting my own dojo. Tips: Build up your resume! Get every martial related job, private lesson, and group seminar possible under your belt. Credibility and references are KEY! 2) I make $25 dollars an hour, but I only work 12 hours a week. Which is AWESOME for a college student, but you can't support a family on that. If I had my own dojo, I'd be making about the same AFTER all business oriented costs. HERE's a TIP: You need a second form of income. Start an afterschool program. This was A HUGE money maker at my last dojo and it's the only reason my instructor was able to live comfortably. He ran a very successful night program (aside from after school) but the operating costs were just so much. 3) I'm only 20 years old and I do what I love for a living. Lots of people over 30 years older than me can't even say that!
  5. Yeah I'm looking more into renting out space at an existing place rather than starting up from my own in a rented space. I was wondering what type of places might already be paying rent or own their building and possibly rent out to me.... Thanks for the marketing tips. I've been planning on emptying out my savings account on marketing as soon as i've got somewhere.
  6. Hey guys, I don't have the time or money to be putting into my OWN space right now, but I'm really needing to get out on my own and teach. I've been teaching for 5 years and right now I'm contracted through the county to different youth centers and teaching at those but I really need a venue to be my own boss as well as have adult students. I've been in contact with some Gyms and even called Cheerleading places and Gymnastics gyms but nothing seems to be working out as far as me renting space from them goes. I'm running dry of ideas and I'm putting everything I have into this... time, money, etc. Where can I rent space and be my own boss? Any fresh ideas?
  7. Hmm, The first one reminds me of something I teach reffered to as "The 10x Rule, and 10:1 odds". Meaning you should always keep a frame of mind that finds the balance between assuming your opponent is 10x better than you but also knowing you have a 10:1 odds of winning the fight/match/attack you're defending, etc. if you are a trained martial artist and they have no training what so ever.
  8. Hey I can't send PMs but I'm interested in this software. Let me know how I can get it! Thanks!
  9. Hmm. I see. So they're going up there, drinking the water, and coming back 3 dans ahead of when they left two weeks ago? I just booked my flight, we'll see how it goes.
  10. I mean like bringing something to the table to innovate our system. It's called Goshin Kaiku Ryu literally meaning the Evolving System of Self Defense and it incorporates attributes of A LOT of styles. I'm not a BB in any one of these styles but in a similar system called Street Defense... http://www.streetdefense.com for info on that. So what I mean is I'd be ecstatic if a BJJ BB came in, because he could really help us with our groundwork.... or even if a Wing Chun person came through and could teach us a thing or two about trapping or single sided blocks.... because I'd like to think that our system could give back to these stylists by enlightening them and helping them with their game a little on the opposite side of their style spectrum.
  11. It's really just building their character. Don't be so upset about it. Haha, whoa just kidding. This video is horrible. I actually couldn't decide what was worse.... students getting whacked with sticks for not kicking properly, or that dude's haircut. Didn't it seem like he was coming to the camera for a second? I was scared....
  12. I only allow existing BBs to display their rank if they are contributing something to my system. We are a mixed martial arts system so if you wish to come contribute something to us, instruct us in your technique and how it applies to us, please feel free.... however if you are 8 years old and earned your BB in TKD Little Dragons or what not, I'm sorry, you're wearing a white belt. Of course you and your parents will be made aware of the fact that you'll probably progress in rank quite quickly due to the fact that you have had previous training.... that's a given. I have yet to promote a black belt in Goshin Kaiku Ryu, and I have a feeling it's going to be a while. If an outside blackbelt were to earn black belt rank in our system's curriculum, I would furnish him or her with a black belt in Goshin Kaiku Ryu, but again because of the mixed art nature of our system, his previous degrees in other styles or systems would be noted in a different color than the rank stripes from us. I do believe in always acknowledging previous training in one way or another because I've been shot down too many times by people who own schools and really didn't care about my previous training. They were always very rude and wanted to push their training on me whenever they found out about my previous training. It was weird, because I was obviously already in their school, willing to train. Haha, I hope this is all comprehendable, its my 2:30am babble.
  13. I want to know what's REALLY going on in Canada. Can anyone tell us? Who even knew...
  14. I cleaned for lessons for a year or so. I'm not sure how I feel about it as a requirement. The most vital thing regarding training or requirements of any kind for ANYTHING (not just rank) in your martial arts school is the ability for you to ask "why"? I encourage my students to constantly be asking me why we do things or what is the significance of ANYTHING. I've decided that on the day that I cannot come up with a legitimate answer for that question, I will change whatever they are asking about in order for it to make sense. If their reasoning behind it is having something to do with what the school is giving you and you needing to give back to the school, ask if you can do something more meaningful to you and your fellow testers. Maybe you can build something of use to the dojo together, kind of like a "class gift". This seems to make more sense to me than cleaning the mirrors. Definitely ask "why", see what they say, and heed my advice. Let me know if this helps. Sensei Michele Agius
  15. I'm in Tampa... what does your friend teach? Does he charge? I'm interested in training with others and being taught new things, but I don't want to join a school because I basically have my own and I don't have the time or money to put into ranking up, waiting to learn certain things in order to learn other things, and what not. I just want someone to train with, regardless of system or style, politics free.... that's basically what garage dojo says to me:) Give me more info!
