What're the best ways to drill and practice BJJ on your own?
-
Thanks for the feedback, guys. I'm very comfortable with rolling and falling, it's something I learned how to do a long time ago, and so I practice it regularly on a daily basis. I like JWLuiza idea for practicing hip throw, that was just the sort of advice I was looking for. Much thanks.

Either a white top/black pants or all black gi for me.

My dojo is on winter recess for the next few weeks, and I was wondering how I can practice my Judo techniques without a partner? Any and all tips or advice is much appreciated.

Setting Up The Back Kick
Cuong Nhu Fury replied to Superfoot's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A basic combination we use in Cuong Nhu to set up Spinning Back/Spinning Heel Kicks is as follows: (W/ Right leg forward) 1. While sliding back into a Cat Stance, deflect an oncoming Front Kick with a Soft Style Lower Block (right hand blocking, left hand guarding up by chin, open hand). 2. With a small right step forward (make sure to angle foot position in slightly), counter the kick with a right ridge-hand to the temple. 3. If the opponent blocks the ridge-hand, quickly pop your hand around the block, and strike out at the opposite temple with a right backfist. As you throw the backfist, angle your foot inward even more. 4. As your opponent goes to block the backfist, he leaves his upper body (and left side of his head, if you intend to throw a Spinning Heel Kick, and aim it high) exposed. The angle you’ve turned your foot on allows you to quickly execute a left Spinning Back Kick or Spinning Heel Kick. If you want to start on the left foot, just flip everything around, striking and blocking with the left hand, guarding with the right, and kicking with the right. -

best techniques to end a fight

A full force uppercut to throat would have the chance of killing them, yes. If you excersie control, however, and strike with enough force simply to shock them, if you will, then, for the most part you need not worry about death. That is to say, if you can excersize proper control. If not, you are 100% correct. -

A good knee to the face or uppercut to the throat. If they can't breath, they can't fight. -
Personally, I find that my steel toed boots really slow down my legs, so I don't wear them all that often. I myself stick with a good pair of Pumas. Sure, having steel-toed boots could be helpful in a fight; I myself am not willing to sacrifice the speed for additional power. That's just for boots though; I don't have any experience with steel-toed shoes.

I'm looking to start a new martial art, and the school that has caught my eye is the Eight Step Mantis Kung Fu in Sayreville NJ. I sent an email to the Sifu asking for class information, but it seems that his email is no longer working, as I got a no delivery notice. I've called twice to no avail. Does anyone know if that school is still open? If not, can I please be pointed in the direction of another Kung Fu school within the Monmouth County area?

Master vs. Master?!?
Cuong Nhu Fury replied to haidongNC's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I haven't seen any "masters" fight, per say, for in Cuong Nhu one is not considered a master until he or she has reached Rokudan, or 6th degree. I personally have never had the pleasure of meeting a Cuong Nhu sensei that had ascended past Yondan, or 4th degree. I have seen several great sensei sparring matches, though. The best I've seen was between my sensei and a former student of his whom is also a sensei now. It was astoundingly wonderful, their timing and precision was immaculate, and they used just the right amount of energy whenever they threw a technique. It was really outstanding, watching two men who truly excel at what they do go at it. -
I agree 100%.

what uniform & sparing gear do you use
Cuong Nhu Fury replied to matbla's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I myself wear a Pro Force gi. As for sparring gear, I use Swift Royal Full Headgear, Swift Royal Punch Gloves, and Swift Royal Kick Footgear. -
Absolutley. Cuong Nhu is a Vietnamese style of Karate. It's name comes from the Vietnamese phrase for yin and yang because it combines both hard (Shotokan Karate, Wing Chun, Kung Fu American boxing) and soft techniques ( Judo, Aikido, Tai Chi and the Vietnamese style of Vovinam). The first school of Cuong Nhu was founded in 1965 in Hue, Vietnam, by Grandmaster Ngo Dong. In 1971, while working on his PhD at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Grandmaster Dong established the first U.S. School of Cuong Nhu. Since that time, many schools have sprung up across the nation. And thanks for the warm welcome.
