I have hear of your style and I have seen students from your style years ago. Interesting style with an interesting history. When I first started, many years ago, we did not have all the colored belts you young guys have awarded today. We had a 10 kyu system but only White, Green, Brown belts awarded at the student level. Before my time the number of colors were even less. As for your style, again rich in tradition and quite interesting. I am also facinated that, if I am reading it right, Pian 4 and Seisan are kata for Shodan. I never knew that about your style. I'm not saying it's bad I just never knew that. Good luck to you.

Then I stand corrected. I suppose I had too much time on my hands and was thinking too much about the whys of the changes. I was taught the whys but I suppose as one gets older one challenges ideas and teachings. It is probably not a good idea for me to do that. I was just a Sandan and, as such, still had a lot to learn. I understand the many association thing within the style and I can appreciate that. Either way, if one likes the concept of the style and it works for them stick with it.

I've studied Isshinryu and earned the rank of Sandan. Personally, I am not convinced that, in all applications, the vertical punch is better nor the blocking method is better. I have no proof but I believe that the style was designed as a martial art specifically for the U.S. Servicemen working with Shimibuku. Shimabuku developed techniques that Americans would better adapt to because that is the way that they punched, blocked and kicked. It seems to me almost as if the Servicemen told Shimabuku, teach us karate but we want to do it this way. In addition, some of these servicemen came back as 7th dan after less than two years of study and yet, their students spent years earning a black belt (this is documented by the way so I am not making this up). I enjoy some of the redesigned Kata of Isshinryu and I also enjoyed the weaponry part of the style (although I think that they could have developed more Tonfa kata to go with it. If you like it, stay with it, enjoy it. Don't worry about popularity of the style.

5 year old black belt in India?!?!

Should have kept my mouth shut too. None of my business -
I see nothing wrong with it. What would you have done? Would you want the instructor to tell the student that he can no longer teach her? Would you want the student to tell the instructor that she can no longer be his student? Would you want them to hid the relationship or the feelings?Attraction is a pretty powerful boilogical thing. It's hard to just turn if off. As long as the feeling is mutual, respectful and respectful to each of the dojo. What one does on their own time is their own businsess. Just my thoughts but then I am an old man.

It's a wonderful world. Let me try to be politically correct here. To each his/her own style and way of doing things. Although I am intitled to think pooly of the decision and disagree with a 5 year old becoming a black belt, my thoughts really don't matter. If they did, the sensei would have asked me and he/she did not. As for what style, being trained in Isshin Ryu myself, maybe it was a "brand new" style that the 5 year old trained in. Maybe the 5 year old was awarded the rank with the understanding that in 10 years she can claim it : ) -
I was her a while back but got sidetracked at work and the workload was pretty bad (doing more with less don't you know). Well the company is doing even more with even less now. A number of us got laid off and now I have some time to read KF as a form or relaxation. I look forward to checking in from time to time to visit the various topics. Thanks. I'm glad that KF is still here

Let's see, Isshin-Ryu So-Ryu and Shorin-Ryu not necessarily in that order. If you are looking for one that I consider myself...it would be So-ryu that I would identify with

People want to get him out of Chicago. They forgot that their defense kept allow 3rd down conversions and other stuff -- ok so they were on the field a lot. Personally, as a Packer fan, I hope they trade him to an NFC Central team. This way when the Packers nail the Bears 2 times every year and the new team that Rex nails the Bears 2 times a year.

If I had to choose, I am a Sox fan. At least I was happy that I saw them win the World Series in 2005 (before I die). My uncle, a loyal Cub fan, never saw the Cubs win the big one.

If it makes you happy do it. Styles have taken techniques and kata from others and re-done them in the past. Of course these were highly trained people who did that. But, I see no reason you can't do it. It is a learning opportunity. You may find later that the techniques you changed might be better used in a different way...more like originally learned. Again, if it makes you happy do it. I have toyed with such an experiment too in the past.

I like this option with the addition of bringing up the other student who was involved in the error that was mentioned and tell that student the pretty much the same thing except your rasing her rank to yellow. Ok, so it may not be the tough guy way of doing it but then [1] these are kids. [2] it's karate and not brain surgery and [3] I am an old softy. Good luck

Careful, some say around here in Chicago that Grossman was the MVP of that game...for the Colts! If that's true then, by right, that caddy should be Rex's caddy
