  1. and actualy one of my favorite things with the bo is yamashita no kun.
  2. with so many schools of the same liniage around here it makes the shorinkan almost political for camps and tournaments, it has become who you know and are friends with as opposed to what you know when dealing with progression
  3. One of my old instructors is still under mr yamashita, small world
  4. Unfortunatly I probably wont have the oppertunity to come out there its going to be a busy year. But I have had the oppertunity to meet kyoshi haley and I think the world of him I bet it will be a great time
  5. I got ya I used to train under a guy like that but he was out there so I had to find a new dojo. I wont be able to attend camp either but its ok b/c we are supposed to be going to okanawa this summer
  6. I did not begin seeking these answers from other sources until he made it clear that he was the above all authority on kobayoshi-ryu. I have since realized how egotistical he was. I only saught answers to questions he could not answer/would not answer.
  7. I was seeking the underlying reasons for the things we were doing. I am in a profession where it is my job to know all the influential people in my area. With that said, when asking for my own edifacation about the origins of somthing we were learning, how it developed, and why it was done one way, as opposed to another that seemed more logical he berrated be stating he is the 7th dan kyoshi and above questioning! A former student of his who broke away from his organization at 3rd dan (now 5th dan) for the same reasons is who I now train under and he encourages learining all aspects not just my way or the highway. I am very happy with my new dojo. I just didnt know if this type of behavior was commen, because many in the dojo including myself thought this was very uncalled for!
  8. Same here. Im in the Army so Iv had stretches where I went months without training but all n all its coming up on six years. So do you know anything about why gibu sensei, Nagasoto senseis old # 1 left and formed the butokukan? Of couse I know our side of the story, we are gibu senei's only americian dojo but I would love to know the other side of the story. As for me I left the shorinkan for the butokukan because everyone in my area in the shorinkan has gotten way to political for me, to the point where it started detracting from training. My new sensei left the shorinkan for the same reason. So are you going to be able to make it to this years wintercamp in hampton va? If so I may see you there.
  9. Awsome. I am no longer with the shorin kan, Im with the butokukan under hanshi gibu. but its nice to know there are others here of the same liniage. so how long have you been studying?
  10. thanks taz!
  11. does anyone know where I can find some good shorin ryu videos on the net?
  12. Just trying to touch base with others of the same liniage
  13. I understand, there are 12 schools in my area who all broke away from the same original intructor and they all hate one another. I have remained neutral. It truely breaks my heart that we cannot embrace the differences. think of it this way your cohi may do somthing different then you but if it works for him and not for you is it wrong for you both? No, the slight variations in tecnique that work from one person to the next is called evolution! Dont play politics just train your students to the best of your abilities.
  14. In the area I live in there is a huge amount of tension between the 12 kobayoshi shorin ryu dojos within the twenty minute drive of my house even though we are of the same line and all branched from a single local instructor.
  15. I am assuming you are a member of the shorinkan under nagasato senei, and if so I know exactly how you feel. But after two or three years of traing I began to notice that we are not in a defencive posture at all. Think of it more along the lines of attacking at the same time with an effective tecnique against the others. For instance make your blocks into strikes by thinking of them as say a smash to your partners for arm. Now as far as combinations of punching and kicking tecniques during free sparring, watch your partner and how they react to certain moves for example when you kick does he or she lower thier gaurd at all? After some time you will be able to use thier own reactions against them and find combinations that work for you, but you must have the patiance to observe many partners through many rounds befor this will come clear to you. also pay close attention to how you react to certain tecniques because what opens you up may also open up your partner.
  16. another good way to train your hips is to follow through with all your punches and kicks. find something that you can punch or kick through, your hips will contenue to rotate on the followthrough. once your used to the feel of the rotation you can begin to modify the timing.
  17. I would have to say my favorite would be a toss up between sakagawa no kun and yamashita no kun. The aplication of the bo tecniques in these two kata are absolutly devistating, espeacialy if used with a nunti bo
  18. How long have you been training? If you have any significat time in the dojo you should be able to know what you need to work on. For instance stretching, kata, hojo undo, prearranged sequences, sparring techniques. In my case, I do some cardo work to warm up. I then do my warms, kata, and then whatever else I need to work on. Before going into the gym, I plan my workout. I ALWAYS know exactly what I have to work on. This way my workouts are very efficent. My main concern isnt what to actualy do during the workout although all the tips have been great, I know all 18 of our kata ect. ect, and have a good grasp on the art its self, I am looking to broaden my understanding of my art and further my knowledge of what exactly it is I am doing. This is more of a education and mentle progression process then physical. I am looking to sharpen my reflexes, speed, and focus but at the same time learn thee true way. I have been training for five years off and on (mostly off because my job has taken me over seas several times ) So as far as what things to do physicaly during the workout Im clear
  19. its not like that at all. I would never tell my instructor he is wrong. I just want to take in as many aspects of my style, a kata or a move as possible. Its not about whats right or wrong its about learning as much as possible.
  20. Every one I seek advise from is of the same style even though its different schools. However, they have many different views on the same thing, and none of them like each other. But at what point is it neccesary to seek different views on the same style to broaden your understanding of your style?
  21. I am now training with one of his former senior students who also left from under him
  22. I did tell him what I was doing and he barrated me in front of the class, he stated that he is a 7th don and not to be questioned!
  23. The weight of the gi plays a big role in that as well. Big differance between a light weight and heavy weight staying in place.
  24. So when is it ok to seek help and answers outside of your hombu school? I was formerly under an instructer who would loose his grip on reality if he found out you were seeking additional answers outside our dojo? Does this constitute disloyalty, or is it just self progression?
  25. Thanks, with my job I go months on end without making it to the dojo... thanks for the suggestions, anyone have any suggested reading, Iv read tons and am looking to explore even further...Im tired of alot of the same ol same, so any one no of anything good.
