  1. It does not take years if the guy you are fighting knows very little about sumissions and counters but if you train for six months and think you are going to be effective aginst someone who has been training on the mats for years you are going to lose most of the time.
  2. I have really no problem getting to the mount, its just that my submissions and ballance is far weaker from the mount than the wrestliers side mount. There I have greater body control of me and my partner and can react to escapes faster. Also I feel their are more controlable submissions from the side than the full mount. That it is a stronger postion if it is a pure submission contest no strikes.
  3. In our class we start on at least one knee during live grap. I am looking for some new moves to play with from this postion. What works best for you guys? right now I pancake them or crunch them with head and shoulder control or just grab a single leg. I am not a big fan of pulling guard or those who do, it seems like a weak move, unless you have a strong guard ( which I do not!).
  4. just find a partner and practice sprawling and clinch defence it works for Chuck in the ufc he has been on his back very few times. Dont bother with submissions, you need years of rolling on the mats to be effective and not get knocked out while going for them. Just learn how to get back to your feet if taken down. Good luck either route you go.
  5. I have the same problem with my mount, every time i went for a kimura i would get reversed. When your slow and your weight futher to one side or you have an arm undertheir head you can get flipped pritty easy. I took a purple belts advice to go for the chokes or set up an armbar untill i get more experience with my mount. What worked best for me up till know was to get head and arm control and put my chest over their head using my head and knees to base and just smuther them. They buck them selves to exaustion then just tap.
  6. I am just dealing with BJJ so no other tridition applies. If you read "The Gracie Way" Helio developed his style based on what would work in a real fight and tested it out in no holds bared fights. At the time their style was so effective that the gi was seen as a help not a hurt. Royce said he wore it in ufc because guys would tend to grab it instead of hitting him. But now many fighters train in ground fighting so a gi is less effective then in the early days. And if you have seen Royce fight he is not in a full gi anymore. And I am a wrestler not an artist so it is true i am not looking for a greater understanding of the univers just a better way to choke a guy out. I spent ten years in zazen practice and learned to hear the sound of one hand clapping but when i came down from my mountain a punch in the mouth still hurt, but now i can find joy in the action.
  7. I have be reading eddie bravo's book and love how he is speaking out about the use of the gi. BJJ was promoted as a fightting art unlike the old styles but now that mma has evolved beyond them they seem to be suffering from "we must hang on to tradition". Why else would you keep it? You ever try a collar choke on someone wearing a T-shirt? Now don't get me wrong I love the sport of gi style BJJ but that is all it is good for and should not be the focus of the school( just my veiw). Plus I am lucky to train at a school that offers both gi an no gi equally along with a MMA class and Thai class. Which is why we have the quality of fighters training their I guess. One of our guys just fought in the last UFC another is on the Ultimate Fighter 2 and my instructer is going to fight in Pride very soon. Our school is very sucessful and I think it because of its willingness to go beyond the gi. Does anyone differ and Why. thank you.
  8. You should join your wrestling team for the extra mat experience. you would be amazed at how much you can crossover and incorperate in to both styles. Also in the first few months don't go overboard tring to learn tons of moves. focus on being relaxed and not giving your arms to easy arm-bars. Most of your other bigining submissions are easy to avoid and get out of with just a little bit of practise. I spent my first few months mostly learning counters to chokes because i love to shoot in and din not expect a choke. And now i love to give people my back and start from the turtle postion because it is more fun then passing guard!
  9. We just went to the same system as our main school in Brazil after each 100 classes you are able to test for your blue, then purple belt. Brown and black are different and our professor did not go in to detail about it. We also started using stripes for each 25 classes.
  10. I think it depends what you want from it . If you want to beable to keep those of us who like to grab a striker and slam him down so we can bring the pain then you need to have some ground defence in your bag. Now if it just for fun and you find male contact strange then just get real good at lucky punching your way through life. I hit like a girl (not a tough girl) so i go for the takedown fast.
