Karate v Boxing
MATX1 replied to shukokai2000's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
sorry, what do you mean? -
I didn't have sex for months before my first fight but then I was single and poor. haha. Adrenaline is natural when fighting. Some arts teach you to use it, others to avoid it. Both ways work.

I've done it once and loved it. some of my colleagues took it a bit too seriously but I'd do it again! watch outfor the bruises.

No gi Judo
MATX1 replied to Zapatista's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have never seen Judo being played without the gi so I don't think it'll be easy to find. Good luck though. -
very useful links. I wasn't the author of the thread but I really apppreciate the links. Many thanks.

If a fight starts really close in front of you then you may not have room to evade. Blocking is a vital skill

Yes, fighting comes from within. Without proper zanshin awareness and focus you will not do well.

Another must have book for me is Angry white Pyjamas

No one has said Sun Tzu the Art of War yet. An excellent "must have" book that you'll read time after time

Many clubs now teach non-traditional kata up to about green belt which seems Ok in most cases. The new breed of kata are like Four directional block and Six basic strikes etc.

If you are breathing correctly a kiai (Kiap in Korean arts I think) will come naturally. Most arts concerntrate on correct breathing.

BJJ Vs. Sambo
MATX1 replied to Zapatista's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Both are excellent arts and fun and rewarding sports. -
Maturity is not the same as age. I've met Shodan's who aren't mature enough in my opinion; some were under 17, others in their forties.

Fight grapplers, boxers and Wing Chun kung fu fighters and then some more. See how people move and observe the similarities between methods. Infighting is not a distance, it's a interpretation of a situation; a frame of mind. There is no one solution to solve every problem, only experience can improve your timing and descision making processes.

It is easy to criticise a man behind his back. I don't see his doubters stepping up to be knocked out. -
Too many patches means your gi gets heavier and heavier. lol. Some kids seem buried under a pile of patches. Like boy scouts.

Which Martial art is better Karate or jujitsu?
MATX1 replied to japanman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I was always taught that there is no such thing as the best art, only better training. As I gain in experience, I have found this to be true. There is good karate and less good karate. There is good jujutsu and less good jujutsu. -
Every time you block in a kata or form, visualize the attack. Make sure you don't waste your efforts doing dead kata, visualization is the key to maximizing the potential. Repitition counts, but quality over quantity any day!

Most traditional arts promote humility. With good training negative emotions like pride are tempered.
