  1. My dojo has regular training sessions for Kihon, Kata, Kumite and sometimes we even include wepons in it but we also have a competitive team that trains during separate sessions and it is optional for whoever wants to compete. I think this works very well and help ups to find a balance between these two aspects.
  2. Thanks, Be sure about meeting more people in this forum that share the same idea. I know we could find a lot of “miss-leaded” persons who practice M. Arts as a way of violence and other wrong ways but for the majority of practitioners the idea of finding peace, keeping the peace or anything to do with peace should come natural. You can notice that going back to the basics of what some of the different styles and/or schools teach. Here are a few examples: -Wado Ryu I think it means the “Way of Peace” or "Way of Harmony" -Some Karate styles specially Shotokan use the “Heian” katas as a regular part of training and as far as I know “Heian” means “Peaceful Mind”. And so on…… Personally I like to see Martial Artist more as “Peace Keeper” than “Peace Breakers”. Note: I think we should open a whole discussion just about this topic. How about that? Good Luck.
  3. Welcome and please neve change the "peaceful thing" part of you motivation. Thats the real deal.
  4. I just joined the forum yesterday and I have found a lot of useful information about Martial Arts in general. Here is a little note about my background in M. Arts: I started practicing Shotokan in a ISKF/JKA dojo in 1996 until I got promoted to 8th kyu when I had to stop practicing for several reasons. Then I resume practicing Shotokan since January 2005 but this time in a SKIF dojo that at the end of the day feels like the same thing with a few variations on rules and practicing methods but still very good. I used to practice Judo in my college days and I am also a big fan of Aikido and some other MA like kungfu.
  5. The only problem I would see is if you get something different than what you order but in the case of Satori before they start making your gi you have to talk to them over the phone and if you give them the right information you should get something close to the perfect gi. As you can see I am a little happy with satori and I talk on behalf of my wife too. She complains about everything, never happy with anything but when she got her gi after a month she wants to order a second one.
  6. My personal recomendation: 100% Cotton 12Oz canvas no. Not too heavy not too light. Perfect balance. Brands (Tokaido, Shureido, etc....) If you want the perfect fit and better finished visit http://www.satori-gi.com/ and order a custom gi for less money that the other brands.
