If you do more then one MA
Shoto Tiger replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good question. I do Shotokan and self defence - fortunately using similar manouvers! I have been known to slip into the wrong followup movement once or twice, but thats only normally when I am being shown a new one and I try to rush myself. I suppose if you focus properly this shouldn't happen in the first place -
I am the Entity known as Zull, and My Chi iz Flawless!

Hi Zull You sound nuts but a good laugh - welcome to the forum -
Hello and welcome. Ki is a controversial subject. There's not much on your profile. What MA do you utilise your Ki for? Thanks Melanie _________________ Melanie --------------- Be nice if I get this right one day... [ This Message was edited by: Shoto Tiger on 2002-04-17 05:35 ]

East Sussex based, Shotokan Green belt - if enthusiasm is all that's required to come along - I'll be there with bells on Yoda!

Fellow Gemini here, tiger and air. ?? Two twin tigers suffering from wind! Hahahaha

Sai, the longer I know you the more we have in common. I am a major fan of Anne Rice and have been ever since I saw the film Interview with a Vampire. I have collected, I think almost all of the Vampire Chronicles now and the New Vampire Chronicles too. Dracula, Blade, Vampyre and all associated vampires have been read, watched, recorded and remembered but Louis, Armand and Lestat will always be the epitomy of romantic blood sampling!

I pay £42.00 a month to go 3 times a week to Shotokan and Self Defence - just over $60.00, but so far I find it worth it

Long term and Short tern goals?
Shoto Tiger replied to rabid hamster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Long Term - I want to eventually achieve a BB in one MA. Short Term - I am looking at Kobudo soon as it has sparked my interest. I have been told it explains some of the more obscure hand techniques, but we'll see. -
I remember seeing somewhere else that some dojos don't even go for gradings anymore, for this very reason. They are independent ones so are not tied into a 'traditional' organisation. Some dojos just do the belts for the kids, as it means more to little children than adults to show mum and dad how well they have done. I think MA is about challenging oneself, not others. You can use others as a benchmark I suppose, but the achievement at the end of the day is your own. No one else learnt to perform that kata till you went dizzy, no one else blocked that punch in time. I agree with you dafabe! A person is the sum of their previous experiences, not some one to be shaped into what everyone else thinks is right. Very good post

I took up martial arts initially for the fitness, as mentioned before, as time has moved on I have felt that there is more to it than just simple moves to imitate. I look for the hidden movements (if conceivably there!). I don't know about other MA but I was told that Shotokan had to be 'watered' down to allow for school children to take part. This means that all the lethal techniques have been removed (so I have been told anyway!). My interest now lies in furthering my MA career (?), learning as competantly as I can, what I can of my chosen MA and hoping one day to find the missing movements! But I am an optimist and I'm well aware of it! I guess I have got more interested in the Kata, history and language and one day would like to get the hang of Kumite, once again I live in hope. Plus every reason mentioned previously!

Hello all, My name is Melanie, I am a 6th Kyu in Shotokan and based in East Sussex, England. I also do self defence and enjoy exploring pressurepoints and bunkai/oyo. I look forward to learning more about everyone styles and hope I can contribute something useful occassionally! I am also a Moderator on another martial arts forum and after the kind permission of Patrick am able to mention it here! Its only a new forum, certainly not as well established as this one, but we hope to pick up the pace over the next couple of months. If you get chance, please do visit us at: http://www.martialartsplanet.com Kind regards, Melanie [ This Message was edited by: Patrick on 2002-04-12 16:51 ]
