  1. I want to know if anyone can give me any information on Benny Urquidez. whether its an article, links, interviews or fight records. I will really appreciate it.
  2. I am a part of The Penn State Martial Arts Club and this semester we have a majority of students who are well trained in several styles like Brazilian Jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, Kung Fu, Aikijujitsu, Tang Soo Do, Boxing, Aikijujitsu, Kickboxing, Ishhinryu and Wrestling. Well anyways today a friend of mine was showing me some defenses against a Tang Soo Do fighter and we mocked sparred for about a minute and I was unprepared for how fast his hands were and did not see an opening or a proper way to defend against his attacks. Can someone give me any ideas on how to defend against a boxer?
  3. For those who don't know there are movie productions of the two popoular video games Dead or Alive, Tekken and Mortal Kombat Devastation scheduled for release in 2006. I intend on gathering opinions on several subjects on these movies by posting polls and questions just for fun. My first question on this subject is the action/martial arts directors. Unlike earlier films based on fighting games like Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and Mortal Kombat Annihilation; America has been graced with the arrival of Hong Kong's greatest action stars and directors. So my question is which director would fit the movies being filmed.
  4. I am in the process of making a document about Chin Woo and its teachers but have only found information on Huo Yuan Jia and Ku Yu Cheong. I just want to know if anyone has any information whether its articles, links or interviews about the Chin Woo masters.
  5. Well I think the tournament angle has been used repeatedly in martial arts films like The Quest, Mortal kombat, Bloodsport and Best of the Best. Howeverm its also good thing because there doesn't have to be a villain that has to be defeated at the end. This movie should try to capture martial arts at its best by those who can represent it in the most positive way. The fights I would love to see: Lau Kar Leung VS. Sonny Chiba Billy Chow VS. Tony Jaa Jet Li VS. Michael Jai White
  6. Well in any case the reason why I chose those martial artists is due to the fact that a good majority maintain that screen presence to carry an intense fight scene. Sammo Hung said himself that when he made movies in the past there were many people who can fight and can do the moves but does that mean they can maintain a fight seen and make it awesome? This is the real question of this topic. Now I am not saying that all these fighters have to go up against Jet Li. Different fighters can mix it up in the movie as well. Since the movie is supposed to have an international fighting tournament, then different fighters can have a chance to showcase their physical talent and their styles. So who do you think can make for an excellent fight scene.
  7. I must admit that when making this post there are a few martial aritsts that don't have their exact style listed. So when I came across people like Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao I listed the styles that they used in their movies like Sammo Hung using Wing Chun in Warriors Two, and Prodigal Son. The martial artists that don't have a complete listing of styles are: Sammo Hung Jackie Chan Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa Hiroyuki Sanada Jim Kelly And in reply to isshinryu5toforever's post; it would be rather difficult for an unknown fighter to keep up with Jet Li. Even though Yuen Woo Ping has worked miracles with the Matrix cast, screen fighting with Jet Li is on a whole different level.
  8. Legend of the Fearless Fighter (title still in works) Staring Jet Li (Fist of Legend, Unleashed, Once Upon a Time in China, Kiss of the Dragon) Director: Ronny Yu (Bride of Chucky, Bride with White Hair, Freddy vs. Jason, Warriors of Virtue) Action Director: Yuen Woo-ping (Fist of Legend, Kill Bill vol.1&2, The Matrix trilogy, Kung Fu Hustle) Producer: Bill Kong (Hero, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers) The film tells the story of Martial Arts Legend Huo Yuanjia a.k.a. Fok Yun-gap (the Master of Jet Li’s character Chen Zhen in Fist Of Legend) son of a famous Martial Arts practitioner who dreams of following in his father's footsteps and continuing his legacy. The story starts with young Huo Yuanjia accidentally killing his opponent, son of a local tyrant, during a match. The local tyrant then vows revenge on Huo Yuanjia so he goes into hiding where he spends a few years in a small village in Thailand. During of which, a half-blind girl named Yue Ci, becomes his spiritual guide and they develop a special bond. Ultimately, Li’s character Huo Yuanjia must come out of hiding to defend the honor of his country in an international tournament. In the end he defeats a foreign fighter in Shanghai and becomes a national hero. The film is said to be recruiting fighters from many backgrounds with different styles like Wrestling, Wushu, Tae Kwon Do, Karate, Kickboxing, Judo, etc. The film deals with the growth and eventual realization of Huo Yuan Jia, the character is portrayed as an ordinary person, rather than the exalted status of a folk hero. It depicts Huo Yuan Jia as a man of principles, restraint, and great forbearance who doesn’t believe in violence and in paying back his enemy in their own coin. The real life Chinese Martial Arts Master Huo Yuanjia was born around 1868, and died around 1910… Huo Yuanjia was the founder and spiritual guru of infamous Martial Arts School Chin Woo (Jing Wu)… He grew up very weak and always sick, his family didn't let him practice Martial Arts although everyone else in the family did. So Huo learned his family art with out the family knowing, and actually got himself stronger. Besides learning his family's own unique style of martial arts, Huo kept an open-mind and was very accepting of other styles. He traveled and learned the strong points of other arts, and combined them into his own style called "Mi Zhong Quan", or the "Fist of Lost/No Origins" -- much like the philosophy behind Bruce Lee's "Jeet Kune Do". But of course, Huo lived in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Huo became an instant national hero after defeating a Russian fighter who claimed to be the best fighter alive, and that the entire Chinese race was too weak to beat him. After Huo's victory, several foreigner challengers all failed to defeat Huo in attempts to reclaim their race superiorities. Later on, Huo developed an asthma-like disorder that just wouldn’t go away, and was killed after some conspirators and enemies (Japanese/foreign oppositions that disliked his heroic status among the Chinese) poisoned his cough medicine. There comes the story of "Chinese Connection/Fist of Fury/Fist of Legend" made famous by the Bruce Lee and Jet Li films, which are known so well, where Chen Zhen avenges his master's wrongful death. That is the description of Jet Li's last Kung Fu Movie The reason I am making this topic is to find out who you think should be in this movie. Huo Yuen Jia like Mas Oyama had a very extraordinary life stories. But when film productions were made on these films their stories became fictionalized to a degree. So for this movie they should go all out with the martial arts action by hiring martial artists who can deliver the most intense screen fights to date. I just want to get an opinion on which martial artist you think can make the film better or make it worse when it comes to displaying martial arts. For example "Shaolin Challenges Ninja" starring Gordon Liu showed how Kung Fu's adaptability to Japanese martial arts from hand to hand to weaponry, but since choreography has improved since the seventies; not only the martial arts can be shown at its best but the actors as well This list of Jet Li's martial arts background was posted by TheMASSIVE on the IMDB Forums. Jet Li specializes in the following styles: • chang quan (long fist) • dao (broadsword) • gun (staff) • fanzi quan (tumbling fist) • 3-section staff • pu dao (horse chopper) • taiji quan (the 5 main styles) • xing yi quan (mind-form fist) • bagua zhang (eight-trigrams palm) • jian (straight-sword) • qiang (spear) • zui quan (drunken fist) • tang lang quan (mantis fist) • ying zhao quan (eagle claw boxing) • zui jian (drunken sword) • shuang dao (double broadswords) • axe • battle axe • double hooks swords • fork • 9 section whip • mace • hammer • talon • trident-halberd • long-handled spear • short cudgel • meteor hammer • rope dart If you don't want to reply that's cool but if you do then don't post any anti-Jet li thread doubting his skills.
