  1. Thanks all! BullsEye
  2. I weight 168lb and anything below 100lbs feel too light. You don't want to push the bag around like a ragdoll when you are punching - you won't build power that way. Go with a 90lb+ GOod luck! BullsEye
  3. Get a good pair of light weight gloves and then a set of heavier gloves (14-16oz) so you work on different aspects of your punching. There are several brands to choose from, so it really comes down to price and preference! Good luck! BullsEye
  4. Pro's and con's to both: Heavy hanging you have to have a place to hang it - room for it to swing when you pummel it. Freestandings or generally easier to move around but sometimes cannot take the amount of force you put into your punches/kicks without moving somewhat on their base. Freestandings also do not have the "heft" to them. Punch a 100lb canvas heavy bag and then punch a 270lb Wavemaster XXL - odds are you had a harding target hitting the 100lb bag. Cost: find a good vendor - ebay has a load. Don't go retail. Shop around. Of course, i would suggest https://www.bullseyefitness.com - but I'm bias! Good luck! BullsEye
  5. Great training tool! Speed, timing, accuracy, combo's, coordination, the whole shabang! I highly recommend them. BullsEye
  6. Heavy bags are freestanding bags definitely. Kicking Pads. Maybe some arm/leg pads for sparring and demonstrations - but you should be ok for the time being. Have your students pay youto purchase their equipment and you might make some money if you have a good vendor to buy from. GOod luck! BullsEye
  7. I've had success with the Versaflex. There's a new, improved model out as well. You can find it here: https://www.bullseyefitness.com under Stands & Harware at $50.00 cheaper than Century. Stretching by Bob Anderson is an excellent resource as well! Good luck! BullsEye
  8. Sounds like a defect to me as well. Replace it and see what happens. (you must really be bringing the heat!!! LOL!) BullsEye

  10. It's a great read. Very philosophical - as far as the techniques, take what will work for you and your "personal" style and discard the rest. Bruce would have it no other way. BullsEye
  11. XMA is Chat's attempt to fire up the younger "video game" generation to martial arts. Flashy/Glitzy/Attitude driven - it's showmanship at it's best. Very much like modern day "tricking" kinda like breakdancing in the 80's. Practical applications? Gets kids involved.
  12. This is quite possibly the best way to learn how to apply a technique and understand the principles behind why it works. I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. Worst mistake? Grappling with the opponent behind me, arms around my waist, trying to pull me down to the ground - my body says spin left and my knee forgot to spin with it. ouch. BullsEye
  13. I agree with Aodham here. The question really depends on the circumstance/situation/and dojo. To me, martial arts was more about growing your soul - the punches and kicking empowered you with a sense of confidence/capability/ and a relative feeling of safety ("I can take care of myself and my loved ones IF the occassion arises). Then it also teaches the humbleness, politeness, integrity, etc. But to me, a larger portion of it comes from building the self-confidence - and one of the best ways to do that is to feel safe/capable/and like I mentioned above confident. Just my $0.02 BullsEye
  14. Hello All! Just stumbled upon the site and decided to join up - being involved in Martial arts for over half of my life (16 years). Started out in Karate classes at the YMCA, I soon became enamoured with the movie style fighting (like all kids at that time) and went on to do wrestling in high school and dived into muay thai, JJ, jkd, and got mystified by the whole MMA culture after that. There's a little background - just thought I'd pop in for a little greeting to the site and I look forward to contributing! BullsEye
