  1. I hope so too, I have no intention of stopping my martial arts training, but I do have a high expectation of the studio. I'll come and talk to you when I reach the campus. Thanks for all the advice.
  2. hi everyone, I never expected to get this much information, thanks for all of the replies. I suppose I'll just have to go to check out the class. If they had a TKD course, it'd be much easier for me to judge, but my studio's course was very rigorous and demanding, and wholly satisfying, I only hope that this studio is just as disciplined. Also, for Bart, how long does it take a student to advance to black belt in Jiu-jitsu in your studio? Thanks.
  3. Thanks for all the replies guys. I'll definitely have to go check out their classes. Unfortunately for me, Champaign is a very small town, so that's the only place which teaches jiu-jitsu. Since I'm not very interested in Budo or Kung Fu, I think I'll be having a different teacher than that Dr. Brownridge, this Tim Morrrissey character. I too feel that Dr. Brownridge's credentials are quite ridiculous.
  4. I'm definitely planning to. I live in California, so it'll be a month or so before I get to the college.
  5. Hi all, Have any of your heard of this dojo in Champaign, Illinois? I'm going to be attending school in Champaign, and I really want to learn jiu-jitsu, after my 8 years in TKD. This is their site: https://www.bestacademyofmartialarts.com They teach jiu-jitsu, Karate nd Budo apparently. I just want to know if any of you think this is a mcDojo. Ram
  6. My studio is adaptive in that it makes the 6 month 6-day a week intensive training process difficult for anyone.(This in addition to the prior 4-5 years of regular training.) Basically, they cater the training process to your level, so it will always challenge you. I put 9 because it was tough, no matter how you put it. 2 days for 1st dan, 3 for 2nd, 4 for 3rd.
  7. Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right section to post this, but I am interested in learning how to do a kick up. For example, when I am on the ground, I want to learn to use my legs to bring me up. Many students at my studio are able to do this, but for some reason, I just can't. I have long legs, does this pose a problem? Thanks.
  8. Haha, I don't think a bo staff fitting is worth getting another car over! Beside, I love the car, it has too much personality. Anyways, I make do, although it is a bit cumbersome. So has anyone tried Chikara customs? Thanks.
  9. Need to make a technical correction here. A bo (as in the Okinawan/Japanese weapon) should weigh about 2.5 pounds at least. The first reason is that it's made out of hard wood, usually red oak or harder. The second is the diameter/density required to make it structurally sound. And the third reason exists within the equation for momentum which states Force = Mass * Acceleration. When applied to weapons it means that your bo needs to have enough mass so that when it is multiplied by your acceleration the bo can do damage on impact. I see, thanks for the advice. I also suppose it would make you stronger, working with a heavy bo. However, for demo, heavy bo's are cumbersome and are hard to spin fast. By the way, thatequation F = ma is Newton's equation for force. The momentum equation is p=mv, where p = momentum, and v = velocity.
  10. Sorry guys, I should have been more specific. This was not to be used at anytime on the street. It's extremely inconvenient for me to transport my bo from home to the dojo, so a retractable bo would have been easy to transport. Right now, it has to stick out the window, as my car is small. Anyways, it doesn't look like this idea will pan out. In addition, it would weigh about 2 pounds, which is too much for a bo. I need both a practice bo and a superlight performance bo. My old one's at the end of its life. Have any of you tried Chikara Customs? How good is their quality? Thanks.
  11. I was thinking, two retractable batons welded together would make for an extremely effective and practical weapon. In fact, two retractable stun batons welded together would be an extremely good police weapon.
  12. True, I just thought it would be a cool weapon.
  13. I personally love the Bo staff, but the size of the thing prohibits it from being easily concealed and transported. Does anyone know of a (probably metal) retractable bo that can shoot out when desired? Thanks.
  14. Thanks for the replies, TKD is a self defence form of Karate, but from what I'm reading on these forums, people say that TKD is useless in a practical application. I was just looking for something that may be more effectively implemented in the stree.t Also, it would be reallice nice to learn a very different form so that I will have a better understanding of the martial arts as a whole. Was Jujitsu formed as a sport art, or as an actual fighting art? Thanks.
