BJJ and JJJ
TriStateTerror replied to Matrix0978's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I actually trained a little in JJJ before finding out that BJJ was more of what I was searching for. I am more interested in competing in MMA competitions than I am interested in learning self-defense. I tried a school in my hometown of Edison which taught Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu and after a about a week of classes it was clear it wasnt what I was looking for. So to get to the point I saw that the Japanese version of the art was much more geared towards streetfight and self defense scenarios, whereas BJJ(which I train in now and love doing so) is centered on structured grappling scenarios that are used most effectively in competitions. Im not saying that u couldnt use BJJ in a streetbrawl, but many manuevers(collar chokes etc.) wouldnt be so effective on somebody just wearing casual street attire. Whereas JJJ they show you how to basically mame your advisary. Here is what it comes down to in my eyes JJJ= Much more standup centered than BJJ and relies more on using your surroundings in order to inflict quick and permanent damage upon your victim. BJJ= Mostly centered on grappling and establishing or working out of a guard while trying to either find a joint to extend or a chance to apply a choke. -
Tom Bryans? Anyone have any comments on this style and on Mr. Bryan himself? I was thinking about crosstraining BJJ with a standup art and I am trying to decide between Kenpo and Boxing ( I wanted muay thai but there isnt any schools offering muay thai in my area ). I am leaning more toward competing in MMA than being well rounded in self-defense. So Im just asking for feedback regarding this form of Kenpo since there is a school very close by.

Reasons for training in martial arts
TriStateTerror replied to scobuc's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
A) Used to fight a lot and get into trouble as a kid. B) Dont wanna get into anymore trouble as an adult so NOW I seek Legal Competitive ways to get out my aggression. C) Now Im a daddy and I wanna know that Ill always be able to protect my babies and my family under any circumstances. D) Discipline so I learn how to control my anger and use it as motivation so that I dont end up in trouble again. E) Wanted a good workout a couple times a week. -
Hi hows everyone doing? Anyways to get str8 to the point im going to begin BJJ soon and was wondering how the BJJ belt system is set up? What is the order of the belts? I guess its pretty much standard since its so dependant on the individuals technical skills, so that kind of prevents the criss-crossing of colors and ranks that happens in other arts. Please just share some knowledge with a newbie, Kev

Energy used to knock somebody out
TriStateTerror replied to TriStateTerror's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Both me And my friend have decided that we are going to continue looking at other schools. Im not sure that this Nagasu Ryu is what I was truly looking for as it was based mostly on street situations and self defense. I am looking more for a grappling art that I could eventually use in competition. I figure I will look more towards BJJ and arts of that nature. Plus I just have a bad feeling about this academy ever since I witnessed the so-called effects of my Sensei's so-called energy. -
Energy used to knock somebody out

thanks this is really starting to worry me .. fortunately i havent signed anything to get trapped in a contract im only in my trial month here .. Just out of Curiosity though has anyone heard of Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu because thats what my sensei teaches. -
I want to know does anybody know of any art that teaches people to channel enough energy that they dont even hve to strike there target in order to knock them out? Because my Sensei teaches Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu and he was knocking guys out left and right without even making contact as part of there graduations. I dont know im just very confused right now and I just need to know if its possible, both me and my friend who was with me both believed it was true, Kev

Hey, First off I havent done martial arts in years. I was in taekwondo classes as a kid and I was testing for my blackbelt but because I was young I dropped it. So I consider myself to basically be a beginner. I am a very aggressive person who has fought a lot growing up and I have gotten into trouble as a youngster but now at 21 and having a baby on the way I've decided that it is best that I find a more appropriate way to to work out my frustrations (competing in martials arts I mostly want to get into mma down the road). Now I have looked around at schools and gyms in my area and have decided that I was better off getting more work on my grappling since I have always been better than average at going toe to toe and that I would rather establish myself on the mat first as i am more likely to adapt quicker to standup competition. So basically I found a gym in my area that actually teaches Jujitsu and karate/taekwondo techniques for standup (the taekwondo is centered more on the more practical kicks that would be used more in combat). The style of Jujitsu that they practice in Nagasu Ryu Jujitsu. Is anyone familiar with this form of the art and can anyone tell me the positives and negatives of this form of jujitsu in comparison to say BJJ, Thanks soo much for your time, Kevin
