Just curious to know what stances feel the most mobile and natural to fellow karatekas on this board.

Great thread! Me personally, I can only strike using the instep or the shin. Whenever I try hitting with the ball of the foot, I always end up striking with my toes. Is there a trick to hitting with the ball of the foot?

so when practicing evasion techniques, do you simply hop out of the way or side-step?
-
No, that's basically what I was getting at--evasion techniques. Boxers do it to, except I think they call it "bobbing and weaving".

Does anyone here do any tai sabaki drills? Just asking out of curiosity.

Found this on the Black Belt Magazine website. Pretty good read! http://www.blackbeltmag.com/document/486

Should you ever lose your temper in a fight?

There are quite a few serious women competitors coming out of Japan right now, in particular a woman by the name of Megumi Yabushita. Search for her on YouTube if you're interested.

Sorry 'bout that. Scatterbrain, what can I say. http://www.neufstream.com/visited/search/lyoto%20machida/video/x15wkh_lyoto-machida-vs-sam-hoger

Do any fellow karateka have tips for an individual who wants to desperately improve as a fighter and overall martial artist despite a jittery personality?

Finally found a link that shows the Machida/Hogar fight from UFC 67. Apparently Machida fights with Shotokan and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. All I can is that this fight was good!

Just a video I found on the YouTube. Chuckles!

Would you recommend the use of protein powders or other nutritional supplements?

I'm in my early 20's and have been trying to tone my abdominal muscles to no avail. I don't eat all that many fatty foods. I try doing crunches, but they don't seem to work. Has anyone here struggled with this?

I was just wondering if any kareteka here suffer from flat feet, and if this condition impacts their ability to do certain stances and/or foot techniques? I'm slightly flat-footed myself and have some trouble delivering a chusoko-mawashi-geri (roundhouse kick with the ball of the foot). Advice would be very appreciated!

Did anyone catch that spectacular ending to the Hughes-St. Pierre fight on Saturday? I knew he could do it! The roundhouse kick to the head totally knocked Matt Hughes out cold.
-
I've seen some karateka throw a side-kick with their supporting foot turned 90-degrees and some 180-degrees. I'm a little unsure which is the proper form. Please offer suggestions.

Yeah. Different rules, different skill set I guess.

Just wondering what everybody's thoughts are the on this age-old question?

Thinking of taking up grappling

The value of grappling skills is made apparent by this video. Poor guy looks seriously injured afterwards, though I do like that "leap" in the beginning. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoSFk4thj0s&search=TKD -

Is amateur wrestling any good? It's the lack of strikes that worry me. -
I currently practice Karate and I'm just wondering if it would be in my best interest to cross-train in a grappling art, whether it be Jiu-Jitsu, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Amateur Wrestling or whatever. I don't plan on competing in MMA competitions (not at the moment anyway), but grappling looks like it could help in a sticky situation. Anyone like to offer advice?
