How long did it take for your black belt
TSD Y049 replied to Topic's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The seinor dan in our dojang trained for three years before she got hers. I don't know exactly why but I would guess it is because I went for 3 hours a day, 4 days a week, for a year, but I don't truley know! Dusty -

Mid-Night Blue Belts
TSD Y049 replied to TSD Y049's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Thanks, I think it's a cool concept to. The stories I have heard are that one night Grand Master Hwang Kee looked up at the sky which was mid-night blue and watched the seven stars. Another one is that he used it because the Hwa Rang Dan used a uniform with that color trim and belt. The other one you guys have covered, which is that black is the darkest color possible, which symbolises an ending, but dark blue can be made darker. I belive this one but are either of the other two true? -

Thanks JaseP, I was thinking about using the blue anyways. Several of the boy dans in my class use black pants so I don't think it's a girl thing!! -

In my Dojang we have a choice of mid-night blue or black, if we choose balck we still have to wear the blue to important/traditional ocasions, such as Testings and demonstrations. If we were the black we have to were black pants also. Anyways, I got off topic, what is the history and importance of mid-night blue? I've heard several diffrent strys for dofferent places but I'm not sure if any are true!
-
That's true! But at our dojang we are not allowed to were black uniforms. If we choose to were a black belt as opposed to midnight blue, then we are supposed to were black pants, but that is as close as we get to black uniforms! My instructor is constatly on him about it, but he dosn't seem to get the idea!

Soo Bahk Do Mu Duk Kwan ???
TSD Y049 replied to straybullet's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
The reason they went back to Soo Bahk Do is because Hwang Kee passed away and his son took over, and made a few changes. As for Tang Soo Do being better than Tae Kwon Do for self defense, I'm not sure, but that I wouldn't doubt it! TKD foucus mostly on sport, and Tang Soo Do is primarily self defense, depending on the school or oganization of course (same TKD). Of course since I am a Tang Soo DO practioner I would recomend it but don't go by my advice, I've been studing it for 2 1/2 years. -
Thanks Hammer, good luck on your test!!

In one of my previious topics I asked for advice on my black belt test. i also said that it was on April the seventh. I had my pre-test last thursday, and only half of us showed up so there were 3 in all. I went to class today, as with most other mondays, and much to my suprise he had us stand up and presented us with our belts! I could not belive it, I still can't! I will post some pictures once get them devolped. Oh, and my parents knew since last friday it would be happing so that is how I got the pictures. in the picture it is only me and another girl. The other person was not able to show up tonight so he will get his on thursday. Alos in the pictures you will see that I am not wearing a black belt, it is half red/half black. This is what my instructor calls the probationary dan stage, it lasts 20 classes. I will get them devoloped as soon as possible for you all! Thanks for your advice!

Grand Master Hwang Kee did not borow all the forms from Shotokan, He made three sets of them on his own, (Kechio, Chil Sung, and Yuk Ro) as for the others I'm not sure if he made the totem for each form up but I would highly doubt it! He did not just borrow from shotokan only, he borrowed form many other also. -
