How do you conduct your belt tests for black belts?
cartoon22 replied to 1kickKO's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I like to hear how others do their gradings. At the moment we test evry 3 months but I keep an eye on the students during each lesson. I generally know before the grading if they are at the right level to promote to the next level. I fhtey are not I have a word with them and see if they want to grading. If they pull something out of the bag during the grading then they pass. -
Knowledge is good, but the ability to understand and use that knowledge. I would always pass on the knowledge that I know but not all at once. It takes time to understand techniques before you add or alter them. The instructor needs to look towards the student for knowledge as well.

There is no age limit. You are only limited by your own mind. Always aim high and work hard.

We have set of rules for unruly children but age also needs to be considered when dealing with them. I will teach someone the same thing over and over again if they are willing to learn. It is very hard to motivate yourself with an unruly student. Try to be firm and fair. First time: Quiet word. Second time: Push up( Excercise) Third time: Verbal warn. (Speak to parent if need be) Four time : Written warning. On second written warning then it is time to decide for the benefit of other students. Do they stay or go.

New instructor lesson plan help
cartoon22 replied to cartoon22's topic in Instructors and School Owners
For over 3 years I have been doing lessons off the top of my head, but now there are 3 intructors I just want to try and keep track of what has been done with the class and what needs to be done. This would also help to highlight what needs to be done again. "Teaching the Martial Arts" by Sang Kim was a great suggestion still reading it but due to other work it will take longer than I would of liked for the 1st reading. -

Is teaching essential for higher ranks?
cartoon22 replied to Bart the Lover's topic in Instructors and School Owners
We have just taken over the running of the local club and and we are looking at including teaching as part of the 1st Dan requirement. This would only be for one full lesson in order to assess the students ability to teach. Good idea or not. Reading some of the replies I would lean towards including the teaching in the grading. -
I personnally can not see a problem with a student paying the instructor a gift, Providing it in done for the right reasons. What happens if the instructor gets used to getting gifts say after a grading and non are fore coming, how does that make them feel. I have not come across the problem of gofts from students to instuctors at our club the instructors buy gifts for the students (juniors) for the work that they have put in over the year.

Our clas do not have music but I would like to try it. From them comments made it would appear that it is a split decision. Warm up and cardio are good but during general lesson input I would say it is a nono. I have been to other schools who use music to great effect.

Students come and go. It is very difficult to retain a student once they have decided that they want to quit. As said before if they want to quit they will just stop turning up. If they talk to you there is always a chance that they do not want to quit but they no long enjoy training. Talk it through with them and see what they want from you and then you can tell them want you want from them during the class. Everyone learns at different speed. I will always show someone somehing over and over again until they get what I am wanting them to learn.

I've just taken over the running of the local club, which is now run as a non profit organisation. All instructors do not get paid, we do it to keep the club running. The grading fees are £10 this covers the cost of the hall rental, belts and certificates. Sometimes guest instructor will attend for the gradings. It is very hard to define what should be charged and what people will pay. Are your gradings open or closed (Parents allowed to watch their child)

Together with 2 other instructor we have taken over the running of the local club. We are only a small club just under 50 at the moment. We are divided over whether we should be using lesson plans for the weeks lessons. We all can not make every lesson which is only twice a week of juniors and three times a week for seniors. I believe that for us to give the best instruction to the students we need to know what has been given to them the previous lessons. The basic can always done each lesson. The problem at the moment we have a few high belts but a lot of lower belts. The higher belts seem to be missing out of important instruction. I am looking for direction and advice in relation to lesson plans.
