  1. Does your school use it? How important is it or not to you and your school? Many people are confused if they do not use it. Here is a good link for those who need it. http://www.yamatanidojo.com/karate_terminology.htm
  2. We teach non-traditional American Goju with integrated groundfighting. I am an instructor at our school,I don't charge myself or anyone else for that matter. The head instructor has previous training ,he teaches the groundfighting.
  3. I'm not thinking of taking any other styles, our school is quite "integrated". I was just trying to get a idea of what advice you would give people.
  4. Everyone is into crosstraining or being "well rounded." When do you feel it is a good time to start? I think you should have a good base in one style before venturing into others to avoid having "sloppy basics."
  5. That's good advice. Sorry I can't be so helpful. BTW there are many different styles of karate.
  6. We had two seperate visitors at a school. One was 2nd dan in goju, the other was shaolin kung fu self proclaimed master who was always taunting people to full contact spar after classes. The school was a kempo/gung-fu school and the head instructor allowed the kunf fu master to spar his top blackbelt after class one day. It didn't last long, the kung fu master took him down repeatedly slamming him, basically ground and pound. He then challenged the goju guy for the following week. The kung fu master was supposedly training for nhb competetions,he was also very arrogant and quick to tell you everything he knows. The goju guy doesn't show up for two weeks, but when he did he was challened again. The head instructor said ok,but after class. They bowed and kung fu master went for a takedown, the goju guy stepped off to a 45 stepped on his foot and gave him a nice shuto on the back of his neck, which sent him to the floor. He did this same technique the second time, the kung fu master looked up from the floor and told him that he wouldn't "let" him do that again. As soon as he stood up he went for the takedown again, same result! He decided that the match was over and faulted the goju guy for not sparring fair. It was very funny for all those who saw it.
  7. Goju.We have a 4th dan,four 2nd dans,and three 1st dans.
  8. Thanks for correcting me,I was clearly wrong. You weren't overly persistent and I don't take it personally. Take care friend.
  9. So Goju is the only one out of the four main Okinawan styles that doesn't have Naihanchi. Other than Uechi Ryu, of course... Goju,Shotokan,Wado -ryu,and Shorin-ryu. Uechi ryu is Chinese/Okinawan,but we can keep arguing if it suits you. Hell,I might be misinformed ...or just wrong anyway.
  10. That is far from being accurate. Goju isn't the only style that doesn't have it on Okinawa, or even close to being the only one. I meant of the four main Okinawan styles.
  11. 1. Bringing closed fist up to shoulder before doing a gedan uke (or gedan barai). Not wasted or unnecessary. The movement has fighting and self defense applications IMO. 2. Head snap to first look in the direction you are going to move next. Good. 3. back leg is straightened in zenkutsu dachi. Should be slightly bent. 4. open hand with thumb bent in. Thumb should never be bent . 5. open hand with fingers straight and together. Spear hand. 6. lift back heel slightly when punching. Good. 7. full turn of fist to horizontal when punching. Not for me,I'm a 3/4 turn believer. 8. guard hand is palm up during open hand strikes. Doesn't matter if the application is known, but I have it down. 9. crossing arms at midbody during blocks. Good. 10. knifehand strikes starting at the head or from behind the head. You have to think in terms of the whole movement to know the defensive applications. 11. long and low zenkutsu dachi. Wrong.
  12. I agree, I think there are some half truths and lots of holes in the story. What the church did is irrelevant to me. Why was the guy in your friends face? At that range either person could have hit first. Why did the guy go off and "cry about it"? How old is he?
  13. I didn't see anyone post the link so........ http://www.gosokempo.com/dki-ng.wmv utterly ridiculous. He's a victim of his own success.
