The holidays are still going! I'm losing my mind!! hehe

That history book(if ordered from the site) is going to cost me $65.95 US. It is US isn't it? http://www.dragon-tsunami.org/Products/Pages/books_karate.htm

Thank you very much informer.

That history book is $89 US from Amazon.com and it's out of stock on Amazon.ca. I'll have to check my local book store but my guess is that they won't have it. The history book sounds exactly like what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Nope, just something to read away from the computer. A nice walk to the lake just down the street and a good book is always welcome ya know?
-
Cool..thanks P.A.L. I was just interested because it's been known to be one of the better ones. It has also come to my attention that it's more of a "how to" book. I was looking for more of a "history of Goju" book. I'll have a look around. Thanks again.

Just curious but does anybody know where I can get this book for cheaper than it's selling on Amazon? Goju Ryu Karate Do Kyohan by Gogen Yamaguchi http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=books&n=507846 That's a bit more than I'd like to spend.

Such a terrible tragedy. I'll definetely be donating. If all 4379 members of KarateForums.com were to donate just a little bit of cash, that'd make a difference. Every little bit counts.

Thanks krunchy.

Do any of you partake in competition?
-
Yeah, I figured that there would be bad points to every style. What are the bad points of Shotokan?
-
I'm just curious but could somebody please point out the bad points of Kyokushin Karate? There are good and bad points to every style and all I've heard of Kyokushin is the good.
-
How will I know if I'm in the right place? I can't make sure of something I know nothing about. If you can find any more information on the instructor you speak of, then that'd be most appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks alot for the post KarateHamster and good luck with the grading. Let us know how you go.

**Sorry...double post. My internet's makin' a monkey outta me.

In all honesty aefibird, that article actually brought a tear to my eye. I've always had pretty low self confidence and I'm just "recovering" from a mental illness. This illness has kept me secluded from everybody and everything around me. Over the past couple of weeks, I've decided to take my recovery even further and I'll be taking my first Shotokan class next week. I just hope that the MA lifestyle will touch me as it has touched you. Thank you very much for a great read.
-
Well I'm going to be checking out the intro class at the end of next week(first day back from their holiday). I should tell you that I'm crapping my pants. I'm quite scared. hehe Keep those Shotokan stories comin'.

Good to see that others are enjoying the Shotokan experience. As for me, I've been emailing the chief instructor with a bunch of questions etc. Eventually, I got around to asking about him and his background so he sent me this link. Just click on Sensei and it has a bit of info on him. Being a "newbie" to the Karate world, I don't know if those credentials are worth anything.... What do you think? http://www.karate-do.com.au/

Thank you very much for putting it into perspective for me AngelaG. I've just seen alot more negative than I have positive hence the reason for this thread. http://www.martialtalk.com/forum/images/smilies/smileJap.gif

Thanks cross.

I agree. The $15 dollars doesn't bother me so much. What style do you train in if you don't mind me asking Sionnagh?
-
Thank you aefibird. I'll be trying both the Shotokan and Goju Kai schools. All I've heard of Shotokan is that it's a rigid and stiff system that isn't very practical. All I've heard of Goju Kai is that it's nothing compared to the original. Either way, it looks as though I only have access to the underdogs. I didn't think about the Black Belt Club and Weapons club etc. I have no idea what these are so I'll have to look into 'em. Thank you again.

Thank you for the reply June1. The reason I started this thread is because I've seen so much dislike for the Shotokan style. Not only on this forum but on other Martial Art forums aswell. Everybody seems to think that it's a rigid and stiff martial art that isn't very practical. I could be looking into it all wrong but this is what I've seen so far. I haven't started any classes yet. I'm going to check out my local Shotokan school in the new year(after the holidays are over) so I'm just curious as to how many people will actually speak kindly of this system. So far, you've been the only one. I hope to see some more.

Thanks cross. There's a Goju Kai school right near my home. I'm looking for traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu schools but there aren't that many to choose from and only one in my area. Either way... Kew is the closest out of the suburbs mentioned. It's a 10 minute drive away. Thanks for the help.
