  1. I agree , that's why I think sanda is kind of out on a limb , and KB with throws only , comprimises the strikes. throwing w/o following up on the ground is somewhat a waste of time.
  2. sauzin , that's right , real power comes from proper technique andbody mechanics. you can't get that from using 100 arm punches on your opponents , even is they get injured . it only takes 1 fully leveraged strike to KO someone, never mind multiple strikes. it's impossible to condition yourself against KO's , if a full powered blow strikes you on the temple , chin etc , you're out . full stop . that's why boxers , MT etc practice evasion , parrying and blocking .
  3. I completely agree. However, within certain styles, different methods are used. In sport styles, it's fairly consistent. In TMA styles, that's not always the case. that's why I separate the two. yes , that's right . this is why I am more drawn to and have greater respect for " sport styles " , because everything is transparent and open - it is fairly easy to define what methods it actually uses. whereas with a lot of TMAs , as you have said , the methods can vary wildy even within the same would be style and so does the quality , since usually the " extra " curiculla stuff cannot be field tested as it is not allowed in their competition rules . yet they try to be all things to all men . I'm sorry I don't understand that and I don't buy it either .
  4. >>the training methods make the fighter. I absolutely agree SS , but a lot of training method is determined by style . MT does bag work , pads , drills , shadowbox, sparring etc and Karate may do the above but they also have esoteric things like kata , and include technique of questionable utility like reverse punches and knife hand strikes . so the style does make a lot of difference to how you train. problem is nowadays a lot of other styles borrow from MT and have the hypocracy not to admit to it. I love MT and I would take over any form of karate . as for being unbeatable I think that is only the perception of some people o/s the art. PS. filho is not the best K-1 fighter , his record is 15-7-0 , good but not the greatest and I heard this guy did a whole lot of boxing too . not to mention one of the owners of K-1 happens to be IKO ( kyushin ) . i bet that helped guys like filho a lot. http://www.k-1usa.net/docs/fighters/fightfinder.asp?fighterid=12
  5. HI, Did anyone watch this fight ? was in 03 or 04 . what happened was Casamayor won on a Doc's stoppage because Corrales had two big cuts inside his mouth . now he was wearing a double mouthpiece , and it seems to me , as I have one which I have not used , that the shape of the MP may have caused the cuts. what do you think ?
  6. >>But for straight punches I’m trying to have their >>bare knuckle fist slam into my elbow or at least >>my forearm. elbow block means to use your elbow to block . what you have described is exactly that .
  7. SG , when you say blocking , you mean elbow blocks right ? and I agree on head movement , I haven't used bobnweave , but slips definitely , very useful .
  8. 7S, I can tell you that I check a leg kicks all the time . In fact , I like it when someone opens low like that , they won't even see my 1-2, or 2-1, or 1-3 , or any other combo I feel like . ----------------------------- the guy in K-1 is frans botha , a has been 2 rate boxer . you give iron mike 3 months training in DEFENDING kicks only and he'll rip through any K1 fighter . a lot of people underestimate how fast boxing hands are .
  9. firstly , keep the subject on track - defending against strikes , not clinching , grappling , weapons or any other thing . that is for another thread . please see my styles to see what I do , boxing is not the only weapon I have . I'm not sure what you mean by lure and as for defence - no , the guard position is not only for that , it is also a firm base to attack from. in the ring the hands are held high due to the large gloves , this offers a very strong defensive position. in the street , w/o gloves the hands are not so high, but around the chin/ jaw area . eblows are thrown out uppercutlike as blocks . you won't know what I'm talking about unless you have seen quinton jackson in action. also you may not know this , but a boxing punch is a leveraged punch , meaning it has full bodyweight behind it , very powerful. put that on a man's chin and chances are you'll hurt him.
  10. are you not assuming a boxer can't shift weight fast , check the kick and come back with a power 1-2. very high % move.
  11. I don't really agree. if you parry to close , you are leaving yourself open to strikes on the way in. Elbow blocking and counter striking works a treat , look at quinton . most joes on the street don't have a clue what to do after their haymakers have been spiked by my eblows , that's when the counters come in . I like it a lot . hands up - don't mean just out there for show and wait for him to pummel you . use your jab and cross , be offensive as well as counteractive. if you stick your hands out and keep them there , you are giving up punching from the same side and it is open to a number of techniques. parry the hand and open up a combo . grab it , push slightly inwards , his other hand has lost a lot of power . you can launch your own strikes at the hole. grab it , take his back . hands out may work agaisnt a lousy fighter but I'm not so sure o/wise. and jabs WORK , believe me , if you just follow a speed jab in , I'll have my rearcross cocked and ready . a stiff jab can knock people down .
  12. at mid range , to deal with punches , I prefer elbow blocks like quinton jackson does. at distance, slip and move . close in , work the clinch. large TMA sweeping blocks in my view are too slow to block punching .
  13. I forgot to add stop hits . I sometimes stop hit the hook with a combo of my own.
  14. sick meaning good ? actually I thought he was way over rated . he beat 2 fairly easy opponents til he met royce. Hackney wouldn't even come close to hacking it with today's top fighters.
  15. OK guys , my mistake , I've been using the wrong terminology . the chicken wing block as used by delta1 is to my understanding , a downward diagonal elbow strike . I completely agree that using it as a block might leave you exposed on the same side. This is not what I meant. The arms in a regular boxing guard , I fold my arm up somewhat and stick my elbow out (110-120 *) to block the hook , on the same side. Like what Quinton Jackson does , refer to his fights x Liddell and Bustamante to see what I'm talking about. This works best for the longer hook. for the range ( headbut ) nick specified , why not just clinch and work from there - will take out the hook . sorry about the confusion. my hands are my main standup weapons , but sometimes I throw this kick out and close my hip at the last moment to get the down angle. What if the stances are opposing ? would you still have the same targets , but just on the opposite side ?
  16. delta1, >>I'd guess you are familiar with the kick I'm >>talking about. well , it sounds like a regular low kick , but angled down at the last moment , targeting the knee. >>When you do the chicken wing block, do you >>move toward the punching arm, or some other >>maneuver to negate the angle required for his >counter/kick? OK , firstly I am a SOUTHPAW , and I assume my opponent is orthodox. So if he throws a right hook ( not classic but possible ) , then I use my left elbow to CW block . in order for him to right kick my mid section / leg requires him to reset first - ie pivot left foot ( possibly as he punches with his left ) to shift weight back to his right , to set for the kick. this is a long time , from which I can do a number of things to counter him - stiff jab /hook ( right side ) / rip off a combo etc . my left elbow already back in normal position . even if he manges to throw the rear RH kick to my right leg , I am ready to check it , and follow with a 1-2 , 2-1 . ( in fact I would like this , very high prob. counter to low kicks ) yes , the block is wider ( back ) than ' ideal ' , and if I read you right reverse stance would be s'paw. well , the elbow can't really take his chin since we are in opposing leads , it may if I were to use the right elbow , but then I always prefer an uppercut. if he was to use his LEFT hook , I would shuffle in a bit , to stuff his kick more, then clinch . >> I immagine the block goes a little more back >and out than the 'ideal' block I described. I can >>envision this working with a reversed stance to >>take out his base- we practice that as a strike. >>The elbow takes his chin as he drops from your >>stance spreading his base. But the angles would >have to change to do it as a block. How do you >guys practice it? Angles have changed due to the opposing stances. block , 1-2-3 or any variation that one likes. the hook you described , I called a hook with an arm twirl , I don't find that as powerful as the straight first - then hook punch . I prefer the LONG inverted hook like what Fedor does , that's real neat ! nick, >>Doubt you could see well, your entire flank is >>exposed, you've broken your own angle on him >>and your next probable weapon (right arm) is >>out of the picture. I see your point from a WC angle , but in boxing /KB , we change angles all the time . the speed of the block is a lot faster than you think it is powered by the mechanics of the hip , not arm . And vision if fine , speed is the key as it is in all things boxing / KB .
  17. nick, Hackney was a " white tiger " kempo man , and he broke his hand on the fatty's head . that's why he could not continue . damn hilarious fight though . just goes to show , no matter how big they are , a well connected power strike will bring 'em down.
  18. Why not just use a chicken wing elbow block . If your arm is fodled fairly tight and you put it out not too wide - around 50 degrees. the longer hooks will be caught at the puncher's upper arm/fist, the shorter ones closer to his elbow . key is the block must not be too wide o/w the hook can bypass it althogether on the inside and tag you . And you can roll away a little to further reduce the impact. the good thing about elbow blocks is that they hurt the puncher when they block ! Delta1 , can you elaborate more on throwing hook as hooks ? I always thought hooks should start as straights and tighten to hooks , the ever tightening arc gives it added speed .
