White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. In my uni club we nominate a captain and a squad captain. The squad captain's responsible for organising teams and getting them to competitions, while the captain manages the club and represents it at our athletic union. We have a social secretary to organise socials, a treasurer to handle money matters and a general secrfetary/communications officer to run club communications. Last year our club captain was 9th kyu when elected. Someones grade doesn't affect their ability to run a club. In fact, this has been a very succesful year. We've roughly doubled our numbers (a tough act to follow). Of course, for group competitions we have to keep teams together in similar ability groups. You can't have an 8th kyu taking part in a team kata with 2 1st kyus. Because all our committee are democratically elected, and anyone can run for any position, no-one could complain about being lead by a lower grade. Indeed, such a complaint would be quite ignorant.
  2. Little dragon, it looks like your school's renamed all your kata to numbers, as to count in Japanese is: Ichi Ni San Shi Go After that it kind of breaks down as 6 is Rokku, then Shichi and hachi. Oh, and your first kata is usually spelt kihon. I don't know any styles that name their katas like that.
  3. I was just wondering if anyone's headed to the KUGB student championships in Cheltenham this weekend. Good luck if you are!
  4. High TING! I'm fairly sure that Red Triangle, Liverpool is still operating. It's still listed on the KUGB website. I'm not sure where Senseis Sherry and Brennan call home now, but I imagine if it's anywhere it's Red Triangle. Sorry I couldn't be of much more help.
  5. Hmm, dunno where you're looking for, but I just found this site, which seems to have some great descriptions of various kata: http://www.i-clps.com/karate/kata.html
  6. I've noticed that when Im punching air now, if I'm doing it "properly" then as I extend my right arm I gasp air in. Just a little, but enough to make a sound. It was quite strange at first, I was in the kitchen, hitting air, and all of a sudden I heard this rasping noise coming from somewhere! I thought the kitchen was haunted!
  7. Kewl! Small world!
  8. Cheers! Will do!
  9. Howdy all, I'm Ollie. Started doing KUGB Shotokan a couple months ago when I came to Uni here in Exeter, and now I've got my first grading on friday!
  10. eek, I've got my first grading on friday, and I hear tell that Sensei Andy Sherry's running it. Should I be as intimidated as I am after having read his bio? Oh, and what's kime? Should I worry about it?
