Orange Belt

Orange Belt (3/10)

  1. Yes, using whatever come to hand is a valuable skill. I'm more interested in what dictates which kind of rochin is used. Does is depend on kobudo style? Karate style? Associated region of Okinawa? Associated historical period?
  2. Is it common/accepted for tinbe-rochin practitioners to use whatever implement they wish as a rochin? Using a tanto as a rochin: https://budofinder.com/2016/04/06/traditional-okinawan-weapons-kobudo-kenshinryu/ Using a dao as a rochin: Using a butterfly sword as a rochin: http://www.isja.com/seishinkan/Seishinkan/Matayoshi_Kobudo.html Using a long handle machete as a rochin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKvSKBBN0ko Using a modern machete as a rochin: http://www.karateblogger.com/stari/articles/Tinbei.htm The classic spear rochin: http://www.karatekobudo.com/kobudo/weapons/tinbe.htm
  3. Kata is central to karate and should be included, even more so than kumite. That said, it would be great to have both. I'd like to see more contact in kumite. Maybe Kudo rules?
  4. There are a few diffrrent styles of rochin used in Okinawan kobudo. Sometimes a short spear, sometimes a machette and sometimes a sword which looks a bit like a Chinese dao. So...is there a particular type of sword used in Okinawan kobudo? And...what dictates the style of rochin used? Geography, timd period, kobudo/karate style, rank, position in society? Thank you.
  5. I use a tessen as a secondary weapon when doing juttejutsu, which is part of the Shinto Muso Ryu curriculum. We generally practice with a price of wood shaped like a folded fan. I do have a steel foldable fan which is quite stiff and heavy.
  6. A Bachelor degree is the equivalent of what Dan? Then same question for Masters degree, Doctorate, etc... I know its silly. But humour me.
  7. I do 2 Koryu, Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (long sword) and Shinto Muso Ryu (long sword, short sword, 4" staff, 3" staff, jutte and war fan). There are other weapons in SMR but I haven't studied them yet. I also do Okinawan Goju Ryu (arguably a koryu). I have also trained in Koryu Uchnadi, which has koryu in it's name but is not recognised as such AFAIK.
  8. I played the old game extensively back in '88. I've been looking forward to the remake.
  9. IOGKF is Morio Higoanna's organisation that split away from Miyazoto's Jindokan. I read that there was some bad blood between them.
  10. I don't see kubotan as all that useful because they don't increase your range and don't generate too much extra power.
  11. I was at a medieval festival and I watched a demonstration of close combat techniques, some of which involved holding the longsword a cross one's body with one hand holding the blade near the tip. How is this possible with a sharp sword? There is no way you could do this with a katana.
  12. What kind of fist conditioning was used in bare-knuckle boxing as compared to that used in karate?
  13. I work as a Security Guard in Australia, but the Australian Tax Office will not let me claim Karate training as a business expense even tho I require Karate for self defence on the job and have used it in that capacity previously. Why then would the Australian Court system recognise Karate as something tangible and relivant to a self defence or assult situation?
  14. Usually no armour in karate or kenjutsu.
