  1. Tang Soo Do means "Way of the open hand of Tang" Tang as in China's Tang dynasty. I think what the guy meant was the Chinese characters for Karate Do and Tang Soo Do are the same.
  2. Does anyone know the highest possible dan that one can achieve? I believe my grandmaster is 9th dan. Does it go beyond this?
  3. I like to mess around with Linux as well. It's a hell of alot more stable than Winblows!

  7. A very sad say in metal history. Bless you Diamond Darrel!
  8. The only reference I can make to the dragon whipping it's tail is from Bruce Lee's "Return of the Dragon" when he executed a spinning hook kick to a thug.
  9. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, but I started this thread here because Bruce Lee was Chinese. I'm not sure if Jeet Kune Do is a Chinese martial art, but anyway my question is, do we have any JKD practioners out there? In my TKD school, we do about 50% poomse, 25% self defense and 25% sparring. Since JKD assumes formlessness, do you guys just spar and do kicking and punching drills during class time?
  10. I joined for physical fitness and have a fascination with martial arts history and philosophy. I also like to see the resemblence in the different styles.
  11. Thank you all! Now, I have a better understand about the history!
  12. Congrats on earning your yellow belt! I think out of all of my belt promotions, I think my yellow belt promotion was the most memorable!

  14. Hi all! My name is Patrick and I take Tae kwon do (WTF) and Tang Soo Do. Currently, I'm purple belt. I started about 6 1/2 years ago and started again, last September after a 5 year break! My goal is to finish what I began over six years ago.
  15. Ahhhh that's right. He did say ITF and what I posted more or less pertains to WTF.
  16. "Hokutonoken" is really good!
  17. The Japanese call it "Hokutonoken". In the cartoon, there are two fighting styles: nanto = slicing techinques hokuto = pressure point techniques For example, Kenshiro's style is "Hokuto Shin Ken Den Sho Sha" and Rei's style "Nanto Suichiyo Ken".
  18. I don't think Pat Morita even has a japanese accent!
  19. Just last night, when I was in Walmart, I was practicing my roundhouse kick on a pillar in the store.
  20. I started when I was 24 and do martial arts for self defense and physical fitness. I also like the history and philosophy behind the arts.
  21. Just be quick and for goodness sake and don't lose!
  22. I guess it depends on the school. Our school won't teach Koryo or Keumgang or any other black belt forms until we are black belts. I think the order goes like this -- 1st dan - Basai, Koryo 2nd dan - Geumgang and Taeguk 3rd dan - Taebeck 4th dan - Pyongwon 5th dan - Sipjin 6th dan - Jitae Hope this helps!
  23. Here is a link that will show you some downloadable Taeguek poomse, but I seriously doubt that you'll be learning all of them so concentrate on Taeguek #1- http://www.deestkd.com/poomsevids.asp Also, here is another link to some Taekwondo terminology - http://www.tulsataekwondo.com/Terminology.htm Good luck and have fun. I think you'll enjoy it!
