Shito Ryu replied to OkinawaKarate04's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
First off. YES as martial artists we should have self control. But there are FAR to many kids\adults out there that are WAY to cocky. And becasue anytime you punch a guy you can get charged with assault or at th very least get suspended from school. Those kids\adults are getting cockier and cockier by the minute. Sure we shouldn't go around picking fights. but we also shouldn't let those (pardon my french) * HOLES walk all over us and everyone else in their town. You don't have to break their nose\limbs\etc. But knocking the wind out of anyone will shut them up..... If only for the short time it takes to get their breath back. Nowadays people won't stop until their stopped by someone or until they see what their doing is wrong\stupid\immature. So if we let them walk all over us today. Whats going to stop them from walking over us tommorow?.?.?. Oh yeah I bet that the red head doesn't show.... Lol jk -
Thanksgiving was great...... But the day after(Fri) wasn't so good. I played poker with my uncles till 2:30 in the morning, lost $50 then had to get up and be to work by 10:00. But luckily the work I did I got like $35 and hour and worked for 2 hours, so I did get it back. But still losing $50 still sucked as.s.

Here are is a quick pic I made of a couple my Sensei told me about(the one on the left is the one that he made for himself) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ksurf3r_wi/Makiwara.jpg Also just AIM or MSN me for better instructions on how to make them. I didn't want to spend to much time writing out the instructions.
-
I wouldn't have your makiwara pounded into a tree, or against a brick wall. For makiwaras you want the striking block(whatever you use it could be anything) hung in a manner where it has some give to it. You don't wan't to be punching a padded tree\brick wall. Cause all the energy of your punch will then travel back up your arm and into your shoulders. And that isn't healthy. I will look around for a picture of the kind of makiwara my Sensei made, and put a link to it. They are fairly easy to make, but I can't just explain it with out some kinda picture or even a plan on how to make it. I'll post back in a little while.

The best thing you could do would be to keep a clear mind. And since I have never sparred with someone from a different style, I would suggest maybe going to a Shotokan school and checking out what kinda stuff they do while sparring. I am in Shito-Ryu and that is fairly close in style, I personaly like to do alot of leg sweeps followed up with punches to face\solar plexus. Those are good clean quick moves that will most likely fool a MA of that level. But that is me and no matter what stlyle of MA your in, your prolly gonna fight different from someone else of that exact same style. Before the fight really work on front snap kicks, with the front leg. Those also are very fast techniques. Also in Kung fu do you do many back kicks? Cause those can work REALLY well if the opponent isn't ready for that move. Work on those alot before the fight, and if he scores the first point, then on the next round turn as if your scared and want to run away and if he starts to charge then pop him a nice quick back kick in the gut. These moves aren't something you would prolly beable to easily pull off on an experianced fighter\sparrer. But on a low level karate\(whatever style their in) student, those moves might do the job perfectly. So just work on alot of front snap kicks, back kicks, round house kicks, reverse punches, backfists, sidekicks. And by "work on those techniques" I mean to make sure you can do them as fast as possible. Cause a kick is very good technique if done fast. Also I am not in Shotokan but my Sensei and another student in my class trained in it. And I know that they use alot of deep stances, and reverse punches. I don't know what kind of contact is gonna be at your tourny but elbows are VERY fast and affective in a close up situation. So just keep a clear head and have fun

Or look for a local TKD school that is run by a korean Master. He would most likely be able to do it for you.
-
I don't know about Korean, but I go to this place for chinese and japanese they may have a korean site too..... --> http://chineseculture.about.com/

* Means s.c.r.e.w.

I personaly wouldn't Buy anything smaller then 100 gigs. But thats just me. BTW would switching the OS drive form master to slave screw things up??? Did you try formating the 20 gig, then installing the OS onto the 20 gig?
-
What is everyone here Thankful for???

Sorry the first word that came into mind was Korean, cause that was the "greediest" instruster I have ever met. I take it back and give an apoligy to anyone that was offended by my post. Normaly when I am writing stuff like this it is either late at night or I am tired so I don't always, think about how I should phrase my post. And I think if the instructer was white or black I prolly woulda refered to him\her, as "Greedy Cracker" or "Greedy *" as I am very racist.... KIDDING just kidding actually, no I am not. But I don't know what I woulda called them. I have nothing against koreans at all. I find that most are more polite then most americans, and that goes for most any other asian person(Chinese, Japanese, etc.). Americans seem to be brought up to be naturely rude, and asians to be brought up to be polite, but more and more us americans are corrupting them. With our fast food, rap music, and other trends like that.

I personaly wouldn't use the scabberd as my opposite hads weapon. Only because it is very awkward to use a katana one handed. For me at least, maybe once you get strong enough to easily use it one handed, but I wouldn't bother to use the scabbard at all. I would just buy a wakizashi for my other weapon. Here are some nice looking Katana's http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQgotopageZ1QQsassZpaartist86QQsorecordsperpageZ50QQsosortorderZ1QQsosortpropertyZ1 And if you don't like Ebay then, try this site.... https://www.martialartssupermarket.com that has some nice paul cehn stuff for reasonable prices.

A basic knowledge is better then none at all MM. I got the basic moves of the Sai form a video that came with the Sai I bought and when we started training with them in class, I was far ahead in Sai skill then anyone(besides Sensei) in the class. Only because I had learned hte basic strikes, blocks, and how to hold the Sai from that video I got. I don't really like the flashy moves because most of them are pointless in a real fight. The look good to your friends and in Kata, but most(not all) are a worthless knowledge.

You wouldn't want ot take two different types of say Japanese Karate(IE Shito Ryu and Shotokan) Cause since they are very similar not only would you get confused in both classes but, since they are so similar you would be learning pretty much the same thing in each class. If you want to study two or more different MA's then, try a combo of say. Shito Ryu(if you can find it as it is a fairly rare style of Karate), JuJistu\Aikido, and Escrima.

What do you carry self defense wise?
Shito Ryu replied to HongKongFooey's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Mostly just my eyes... Whenever someone gets gruff with me I just look sharply at them, and they normaly cower away... Lol jk that would be cool though, in my area weapons aren't needed but I carry a medium sized flick knife that I am comfortabe with. There aren't any people around me my age that I would be worried about 1 on 1 and quite a few that I would be comfortable fighting 1 on 2\3\ maybe even 4\5. But only if they didn't surprise to much and didn't have any kind of weapon(bat, knife, rock, etc.) Note noone in my immediate area trains in the MA's, most just do school on the weekdays and work\party on weekends. Or those htat are outta school work wekdays and party any day they get a chance. NO discipline here. -
Although I agree that videos are mostly for commercial use. I also think that the basic use and exercises can be learned form a video. I learned the basic Sai and Nunchaku movements nad exercises. From videos that I got of the net and the library. I got a video on Kendo and Iaito, but it only showed how to use the boken so I stopped watching it. But it did give good exercises on how to strengthen your body. Plus if there are no kendo\iaito instructers in their area then getting a video will at least show them moves that hey can copy and have fun with. Instead of making moves up that might not only look stupid but have absolutly no point in sword fighting at all.

I never said that ALL rap out there is in the 99.9% catagory. I just didn't mention that other 00.1% of rap pepole out there that actually WRITE their lyrics, instead of getting infront of the Mic and bitching about life, without even thinking about what they are saying or what affect it has on the kids that look up to them. I know that there are fairly good rappers out there, but they are a rare find. I don't mind some of the rap\hiphop out there and some I actually like but, not htat typical CRAP that is in the cRAP section at you local CD store. You saw Muse huh? Had you ever heard them before? If not, how'd you like them in live concert? And did you see the "Preshow Party bands"? If so how did you like the last group? If you saw\liked them COOL!!! Cause they are my friends and really rock. And just outta curiosity... You didn't by any chance buy you ticket, from some guy outside, cause if so that was me selling tickets. Are you going to the Chevelle show??? I don't know whether I will or not, I think I am going to Montana the 1st of DEC. And will prolly be getting home the 15th. But if you go send me a description of yourself, so I can test your level of awareness, by throwing a punch at your face(I won't actualy connect just a real looking fake)

I like most all rock, except all that * pop punk htey have out these days(good charlotte, yellow card, etc, etc ,etc.) I don't like Country or almost any Rap, mostly cause 99.9% of all Rap nowadays is a black guy(or eminem) sitting up on stage talking about, killing their families, doing drugs, raping women, hurting ppl in general, etc. to a poorly written set of music(I don't even like calling it music) I like bands that have actual talent. To name a few... I just saw Muse in Milwakee in concert, and for those of you that know of them then, I don't need to say anymore, and for those that have never heard of them............................ Uh https://www.muse.mu I also saw Project 86 in concert the day before Muse and they also kick *. Their music no only kicks * but also has ALOT of meaning behind it, every song either is poetry, has a story weaved into the words or it just has some meaning in it that isn't even noticable unless you really look for it. And even then its hard to make out. https://www.project86.com For those of you who were blown away by mark tremonti's(lead guitarist form Creed) guitar, check out Alter Bridge via, https://www.alterbridge.com Those are the CD's that are in my CD player. As for the other excellent bands out there... Spoken, Blindside, Deftones, Incubus, Staple, Bush, Live, Creed(mostly for Mark Tremonti's guitar work) Chevelle, Blindfold, https://www.blidfoldmusic.com they are my friends and they kick * so go buy a CD/hoodie/T-shirt\everthing on their website. Lucerin Blue, Days of the New, Disciple, The Punisher ST, that absolutly kicked *. The Matrix 1 ST, For those other kick * bands I failed to mention... I am sorry.

Keep the blood on, cause maybe sometime some hot chick will join your MAs class and ask waht happened to your GI. And you can tell her that one night after class you walked home form class and were ambushed by like 3 guys, no 5 guys that sounds more impressive, and beat the hell outa all of them. But you hit one guy in the face so hard that blood just poured all over him and your Gi. And she'll be like "Really"??? And ycould say "No I tripped one night in class and stained my Gi pretty bad" Or use my story or one like it Lol
-
Yeah it would be like having(Unaturaly colored) yellow underwear, everyone would make fun of you. Lol jk, i woldn't but if you like Yellow then by all means get it.
-
Black head gear from century, cause my sensei was able to get it for like $10.
-
Pads??? For to protect your own hands or opponents body??? Real men don't wear pads. Heehehe jk. Actually search for the hand pads made by Shuraido, they are high quality pads, and are thick enough to cusion the blow to your oppent's face\body. I don't think they are there to protect your knuckles though, thats waht knuckle pushup are for, to toughen up you weak knuckles. I was playin around with my cousin ad we both wore the pads(me a karate student of 2+ years, and he a boxing styled fighter, he had never trained in any MA but that was the way he fought) and by hte time we were done both his hands were bleeding and mine weren't even raw. So just do ALOT of knuckle pushups and then all you will have to worry about is crushing your opponents\friends\families faces in

https://www.bugei.com Has a good tutorial video there, for about $40. Or just go to somehting like, https://www.martialartssupermarket.com and get a sword video from there. But I would sugest something from bugei as I think they actually show how to use the Katana, instead of a Boken. A video will give you different stuff to learn but, you will prolly be better off going to a kendo school if there is one in your area. Oh and if your Katana and Wakizashi are sharp tehn I would suggest getting some NONE sharp swords and train with them for awhile.
