I don't know about technically but I don't put those two in with MA. Maybe I should...no offence to any of those. You could never be prepared for everything someone might throw at you. One guy my pull out a grenade, I mean who knows. I'm just saying, if you take all the people who don't know a MA and all those that do, then weed out the ones who study it for the right reasons, then the chances of you coming across a 7 degree BJJ expert or a full on UFC fighter that just wants to starts some "S" chances are not that great. That's just my opinion. I don't go out picking fights and keeping a database on who whooped my A double. But I do see your point, if you are that concerned about having holes in your "game" and getting into something on the street you better learn it all or that one in a 95,625,142,265,822 chance might come when you need to levitate and turn water into wine.

It’s fun to debate who would beat who, but like someone was saying, more than likely if there is an altercation it won’t be with someone who knows an MA. Assuming they are taught correctly. My point is if you have a BB grappler and a BB Whatever, they both won’t/shouldn’t be picking fights. Part of MA is learning to avoid a fight and using your “weapon” responsibly. If you're on the street or in a bar and someone starts something with you...you should be fine with what you have...if it’s striking or grappling. Just look out for his buddies. All of that aside, I know it’s been said before but they only real research we have to look at is the early UFC’s. I know that’s not a “real” street situation, but how many real street situations do we have on tape of two known BB’s going at it? Not many. In UFC 1 you had first class strikers, Judo, Shootfighter, the list goes on and the BJJ won and easily. I think the only reason the UFC is not dominated by BJJ now is because they all know it. So you have to be well rounded. If you go out there with no grappling you better get ready to tap. If you go out there now with just BJJ you better bring the Vicodin.

I just started BJJ and I’m buying my first gi...never bought one before. I’m 6' and 145 pounds. I wear a 42 regular or 40 long jacket and 31W 34 L in pants. I have long arms and legs. With all of that info what size gi do you think I should buy using this chart? http://www.atama-kimonos.com/products/kimonos/Judo/judo%20single%20blue.htm I can order the top and bottom separate so what size top and bottom would you suggest? Oh, what length belt also. Thanks.

second hand sparring gear in the greater toronto area?

Especially cups. -
Anybody use the Wavemaster 2? It’s a smaller, thinner version, which I need in my real small house. I need a small one for room but I was wondering if it was too small and would knock over too easily. I think it weighs about 175 when it’s full. Any experience with these?

I want that on a T-shirt!

Class Prices
Lenny replied to oscar2010's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
$75 a month for unlimited Krav Maga in Dallas. -
I can’t say anything about the others, but I just started Krav Maga and it is completely geared toward self defense. No uniforms, forms, tournaments or any spiritual stuff. Just how do deal with someone and make them real sad real fast if they decide to mess with you. I like it...a lot. Good luck and research. I researched and visited places for months before I went with KM and I think I made the right choice for me.

Wing Chun or Krav Maga
Lenny replied to Lenny's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I took my first KM class last night and I was worn out! I work out four days a week but it still kicked my butt. I also felt like I learned a few things I could actually use in a self defense situation...if I don’t panic ...which I would at this point. Anyway, thanks for the advice and I’ll keep you posted. -
I’ve always wondered what are the legal responsibilities when you are an “expert” with a martial art. If someone attacks you or starts something with you, so you have no choice, and you make them sad they messed with you. Let say you also had to injure them with a joint lock or knocked them out or even had to use an eye gouge because there was not a choice. It was either you or them. Are you more/less liable knowing a MA? Has anyone ever had to deal with that situation? Is so what happened?

Wing Tzun people?
Lenny posted a topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
How does this school look? http://www.dallaswingtsun.com/wing_tsun.htm I know you can’t tell much by a web sit but what’s your first impression with it. I’m gonna go visit it but I was just wondering if it at least looked/sounded like a good school. At the bottom of the web page it mentions Emin Boztepe. I don't know if it's affiliated with or the instructor was trained by or whatever with Emin Boztepe. It sounds like it focuses on all aspects, stand up, ground, etc... and that’s what I want without going to three different schools a week. I’m brand new to MA's and I’m in search of a good self defense style and I’m shopping around. Any input would be appreciated. While I have your expertise, how does Wing Tzun differ from Kung Fu? Or does it? Thanks for you help. -
Which style, in your opinion, is a better real life self defense. I know they are both good and I'm not asking anyone to put the other one down or anything, just pros and cons. I want a no bull crap, well rounded self defense and I think I’ve narrowed it down to Wing Chun or Krav Maga. What’s your take? Thanks.
-
I do see your point, but I drive an Isuzu and not a Mercedes for the same reason I'm shopping around for good prices on different schools. It would be great not to have to consider price, but I do.

I'm still looking for the right MA for me and I have some interest in Hapkido. It seems to be a pretty well rounded MA for self defense. I was researching some schools in the Dallas area and I was wondering if anyone had any referrals or opinions about schools in the area. Also, how much do you pay per month? One school here charges 115 a month and that sounds a little high. Is it, compared to others? How long did it take to get your black belt? Is it easy to get hurt in Hapkido? I've heard a lot about painful joint locks and pressure points. I don't mind getting banged around, I just don't want joint reconstruction. Thanks for you help.

? about Heike-Ryu Jiu Jitsu
Lenny replied to Lenny's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I did and nothing very definitive came up. -
Anyway, the point here is... if you don't know something, research it. That's what I meant.

Bad advice. George Lucas doesn't know about life on other planets but he wrote Star Wars. Quentin Tarantino would just write movies about working in a video store. That would really suck.

I’ve been jumping around different forums trying to figure out what MA I want to take. I mainly just want a good self defense. Someone suggested JKD, I know it’s not a style, so please... There is a school close to my house and I was wondering if anyone has heard of this instructor before, Willie Wilson III? http://www.jkddallas.com/Instructors.htm Is JKD a good MA for someone who has never taken an MA before? Should you have some experience with something else before you start JKD? I don’t want any short cuts but I don’t want an MA that takes 10 years to be able to use...like Aikido. No offence Aikido people. Does JKD take forever? Is it complicated? I like the idea of taking a little of everything and combining it. Any help would be appreciated.

Lenny replied to Lenny's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Thanks everyone. I would consider BJJ more but I just flat out can't afford the clubs around here. I say I'm not an aggressive person, that's not to say I'm a pansy. I just don't have that beat their face and break there arm mentality. Not that you guys do. Once I get going, like in basketball, I'm as competitive as the next guy. After Thanksgiving I'm gonna visit a Judo/JJ school and see what's what. I really do appreciate everyone’s help. -
I’m new and trying to find a club and I have a question. What is Heike-Ryu Jiu Jitsu? I’ve searched and I can’t really find a definition of that style. I know Jiu Jitsu is a grappling style but what does the Heike-Ryu indicate? How does it differ from BJJ? I’m looking at a school that combines Judo with Heike-Ryu Jiu Jitsu, is that at good thing? Thanks for you help.

Lenny replied to Lenny's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Thanks for the input. I really like the way Aikido sounds but I hear it takes years to become adequate at it. I would prefer to take something that I could apply if needed a little sooner. It's too bad, there is an Aikido school about 2 minutes from my house. I may drop in and see what it's about anyway. -

Thanks for the reply. I'm interested in BJJ but I'm a little afraid of it too. I'm sure it gets a bad rap, but I hear a lot about it being very aggressive...almost brutal. I'm sure it's a case of a few bad apples? One major factor is the BJJ schools here are about $100-140 a month and the Judo school I'm looking at is about 40. Unfortunately I have to look at price. Thanks again.
