White Belt

White Belt (1/10)

  1. You shouldn't be trying to choke anyone out unless you have been properly trained in the application of a choke hold. Statistics show that of the accidental deaths involving police officers trying to apprehend a suspect MANY are from inproperly applied choke holds. In DZR Jujitsu we are required to learn how to recessitate a choked out uke before we we use the choke to actually 'choke them out' in class. In terms of how long it takes, it would take a person in DZR JJ or BJJ about 10 seconds to put you out.
  2. After reading my last post it seemed a bit arrogant, sorry I didn't mean for it to sound that way. Your teacher is on the Danzan lineage tree and I am sure you are learning good stuff. I know the AJJF dues for teachers can be killer also. If you want more info on Danzan Ryu check out https://www.ajjf.org
  3. I'm suprised that since he broke off from the AJJF and modified the original art taught by Prof. Okazaki that he still uses Danzan Ryu in 'title' for what you are learning. Not that it is necessarily a horrible thing, but usually they change the name to something completely different out of respect for the original style. For example, when Wally Jay split off from AJJF and created his own style based on Danzan Ryu he called it Small Circle Jujitsu.
  4. Most jujitsu is based in practical techniques, not katas, you then learn variations on techniques to enable yourself to adapt to different situations in combat. Our sessions are usually about 1.5-2 hours in length with about 30 minutes of that being devoted to the 'body conditioning' part of the training. Belt progression (at least in DanzanRyu Jujitsu) is based soley on how quickly your body develops and how quickly your mind is able to absorb the techniques. You may not gain belts as often as you would in Karate, but you will definitely be gaining 'real world' effectiveness. Most of the techniques you learn even at the very beginning of your training are designed to cripple. Jujitsu also gets into weapon defense quite a bit which is a lot of fun, I hope you enjoy it.
  5. It will vary on Dojo and Style of Jujitsu, however in the beginning of almost any style of jujitsu you will be graded on your rolls and falls primarily. Learning how to fall properly in jujitsu is extermely important You have to learn how to BE thrown before you can learn to throw\take down.
