    wado ryu

Tobikomizuki: start in Shizentai (natural stance - i.e. one leg slightly in front of the other shoulder width apart). Jump forward with the lead leg, as you land perform a snap punch to the head with the lead hand (i.e same hand as the lead leg). Might I add, that in Wado, that this is a raising punch, the punch raises up, as you lunge forward, therefore the aim is to hit the opponent, right under the chin. TobiGyakazuki...Lunging Reverse punch...or as Fish mentioned Gyakuzuki No Tusikomi, or leaning reverse punch. In the Wado style, I do, this punch looks awkward..you basically end up in a Nahanchi stance (hourglass stance) doing a leaning reverse punch to the lower area of the opponent. The lead foot is just slightly ahead of the back foot, in fact, the big toe of the back foot should be in line with the heel of the front foot. It is not a comfortable stance to be in for any length of time. Tobi can also mean Flying/Jumping...so Maetobigeri, would be a jumping front kick.
  2. Take this time, and really learn the basics...that is the foundation of your Karate. If you think you are low in your stance go lower, if your kick is high, go higher. Like others have said, each and everytime you go to class you should learn something new. You cannot do anything about the others willingness to learn, when doing kata, do it the best way you can, when doing partner work, attack and defend the best way you can. If your partner is not giving you a proper attack, let them know where they should be attacking. Don't overstep your bounds, but a quiet reminder is okay, it helps you and them be better Karateka. Just my humble Opinion.
  3. The last testing, which was last weekend, there were four adults going for Green Belt.....2 passed, and 2 did not....so I guess it does happen. MY style has 3 Kyu colors..White, Green, and Brown....so the are fairly strict when it comes to grading for Green.
  4. The web page for that club is https://www.wadoryu.ca Go and see a practice, they start off with just a general warmup, then a fromal bow in, followed by basics, and combinations up and down the gym floor. Usually this lasts about 30 minute-45 minutes, then they break off into groups, and work ippon kumite, Kata, and combinations...then sometimes at the end of class, it is free form sparring with a partner. switching partners every 2-3 minutes.
