  1. Yeah, ippon seonagi and uchi mata are basically my calling cards with everyone except my cousin. i can't get in because if i adjust my attention to getting past his arms, bam, he reaps me. i spend all my time trying not to get reaped and then he'll throw in a tomanaji or something and it frustrates me. as to how advanced i am at grappling, i dunno... i've only been training since may. i'm now a gold belt in shotokan, and i'm actually more advanced in grappling but i don't have a rank.

  2. In my school we have two ippon kumite which are a block/front kick to the groin. the first is a snap kick, the second is almost a front thrust kick. i was told that the goal of the front thrust kick is to break the pubic symphasis (the ligaments holding together the pubic region) causing the hips to cave. I have asked a chiropractor about the practicality of this and he said that it would take quite a bit of force, he's only seen it happen in car accidents and such. Is this a false ideal? Or is this applicable.

  3. thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of muay tai myself. i meant no offense to any tkd's. it's just that the tkd dojos around here (western pa) that i have visited place little to no emphasis on traditional teaching and kata. i guess rather than saying traditional/practical i should clarify that i am looking to learn the history of the arts and such at a good reputable dojo. for instance i take great pride in reading about the history of shotokan. i also enjoy learning the samurai arts as well as modern applications.

  4. I train individually as well as traditionally in a dojo. My training partner is six ft. four, and i am 5 ft. 7. this is causing me to develop some bad habits in my form (taking a more passive stance and relying to heavily on kicks.) any advice on how to continue my individual training (which has allowed me to learn much more quickly) while breaking these habits?

  5. I'm new to the site and also relatively new in karate. I'm currently a gold belt in shotokan.

    My katas are

    taikyoko shodan

    heian shodan

    heian nidan

I also train in some judo/brazilian jiu-jitsu. this site really interests me because i haven't found the wealth of knowledge shown here in any other single site. I have great respect for those of you who have trained longer and any tips would be greatly helpful. I am currently looking to build a makiwara to help strengthen my basic techniques.

  6. Hello everyone. I'm checking out this site. I am studying shotokan karate along with some judo/jiu-jitsu. I really like study of the traditional martial arts and such. I haven't found many martial arts sites that I like but i thought i would give this one a try.
