  1. I am going to a weekend lecture/class in november with some others from my dojo. pedro sauer is running it. i was wondering if anyone else was going.
  2. I'll have to look into that book. I need to work on my working knowledge of anatomy. thanks
  3. actually, i found out that rather than breaking the ligaments, which would require the force of about a car accident, you can generate enough force to cause connected parts to break ie. the hips.
  4. the more i get into this book the more i would recommend it to anyone. if nothing else it is a thought-provoking book.
  5. Yeah, ippon seonagi and uchi mata are basically my calling cards with everyone except my cousin. i can't get in because if i adjust my attention to getting past his arms, bam, he reaps me. i spend all my time trying not to get reaped and then he'll throw in a tomanaji or something and it frustrates me. as to how advanced i am at grappling, i dunno... i've only been training since may. i'm now a gold belt in shotokan, and i'm actually more advanced in grappling but i don't have a rank.
  6. I just started reading the book Living the martial way and it seems to be an excellent book. I was wondering if anyone else has read this and what they thought. I'm also reading the five rings and was wondering if anyone had other book suggestions. -Pericles
  7. no i'm not. my main art is shotokan, and i don't get to train in judo nearly as much as i would like.
  8. haha yeah i can imagine that anything having even remotely the force required to break the pubic symphasis would be painful enough to get the job done. the theory is that if you break it, no matter how high their pain tolerance is, they won't be able to physically attack you again.
  9. thank you. that post is really helpful. I was also given a tip by my sensei on a variation of kata garuma i want to try. thanks again
  10. i just bought a middle-weight gi from https://www.e-bogu.com. that is a really good martial arts supply site. It's a 12 oz. gi. I'm quite happy with it. definitely be sure to ask what gi is allowed at your dojo though.
  11. something that you can practice on your own, while not a "strengthening exercise" is shooting in. developing speed while you shoot in will greatly help. remember, most throws are built on the principles of physics and disrupting someones balance to gain control, rather than pure strength. different throws have different shooting in techniques, so you can practice those.
  12. attack the arm how? in usjjf once you clinch there is no more striking
  13. yes, he's able to lock out his arm and keep me from getting inside once we grapple
  14. In my school we have two ippon kumite which are a block/front kick to the groin. the first is a snap kick, the second is almost a front thrust kick. i was told that the goal of the front thrust kick is to break the pubic symphasis (the ligaments holding together the pubic region) causing the hips to cave. I have asked a chiropractor about the practicality of this and he said that it would take quite a bit of force, he's only seen it happen in car accidents and such. Is this a false ideal? Or is this applicable.
  15. thanks for all the replies. I was thinking of muay tai myself. i meant no offense to any tkd's. it's just that the tkd dojos around here (western pa) that i have visited place little to no emphasis on traditional teaching and kata. i guess rather than saying traditional/practical i should clarify that i am looking to learn the history of the arts and such at a good reputable dojo. for instance i take great pride in reading about the history of shotokan. i also enjoy learning the samurai arts as well as modern applications.
  16. When i spar (USJJF rules) I'm usually at a height disadvantage because my training partner is 6'4" and i'm 5'7. I can occasionally take him down with a sacrifice throw or a reversal, but when i try to shoot in he almost always reaps me. any tips? i can't get anywhere near him to reap him
  17. If anyone else wants grappling/sparring gloves, i bought football lineman's gloves and they work great.
  18. i prefer practical/traditional arts. I'm not so fond of tai kwon do because of its flashiness/sport emphasis.
  19. i study shotokan karate/judo/jiujitsu. shotokan is my main art, and i'm looking for a secondary art after i get farther along in shotokan. my strengths are my kicks, and i'm looking for something to emphasize this.
  20. I prefer the tanbo because it can be transported most easy and is useful for both strikes and joint manipulations.
  21. I train individually as well as traditionally in a dojo. My training partner is six ft. four, and i am 5 ft. 7. this is causing me to develop some bad habits in my form (taking a more passive stance and relying to heavily on kicks.) any advice on how to continue my individual training (which has allowed me to learn much more quickly) while breaking these habits?
  22. I'm new to the site and also relatively new in karate. I'm currently a gold belt in shotokan. My katas are taikyoko shodan heian shodan heian nidan I also train in some judo/brazilian jiu-jitsu. this site really interests me because i haven't found the wealth of knowledge shown here in any other single site. I have great respect for those of you who have trained longer and any tips would be greatly helpful. I am currently looking to build a makiwara to help strengthen my basic techniques. pericles
  23. and i'm not a white belt, but i haven't had time to mess around with figuring out how to change that
  24. Hello everyone. I'm checking out this site. I am studying shotokan karate along with some judo/jiu-jitsu. I really like study of the traditional martial arts and such. I haven't found many martial arts sites that I like but i thought i would give this one a try. pericles
