Actually, in several states now, they use your drivers licence for requiring jury duty. Hence, even if you never register to vote, you could still be called to serve on a jury. People were refusing to register to vote for this very reason, and that is why they have started to do away with it. Now, you could always decide not to drive... or at least not to drive legally.

Older martial artists
foreveryoung001 replied to aefibird's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The oldest in my school is Bruce, who is 64... he may have just turned 65. He only comes about once a week, but he is a lot of fun to have around, and will give most of the youngsters a run for their money. He never had any Ma training outside of the military when he was younger, but he stayed in pretty good shape and doesn't have to many problems keeping up with the rest of the class. -
I enjoy the discipline. I think there is a lack of it within our schools, and our homes, and if I can help these kids learn it, perhaps some of that may help in their private lives as well.

what tricks can YOU do?
foreveryoung001 replied to The_Devil_In_Disguise's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well first, tuck your back leg all the way, and second, quit flailling your arms. It's really about that simple. Seriously, work on the heigth. That is the biggest key. The whole purpose for the jump is to gain gain heigth, not to look cool. Second, the kick moves very fast. it's not like it is in the movies where you can hold it for 3 seconds. You've got to tuck the back leg quick, and work on keeping your elbows against your sides after you jump, that will help with those, but don't stress out to much about your arms. they will move about a natuarlly as they try to keep your body in the right position. -
Well, at least you can find humor in my country Wait till I get going about the Queen..... Just kidding. Politics are really quite funny as long as you don't take them to seriously. You gotta be able to laugh.

Why do you do martial arts?
foreveryoung001 replied to jarrettmeyer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I began as a teenager, many years ago, because my friend was involved, and I thought it was pretty cool. I ended up taking break after I graduated Highschool, my college didn't have any programs, and I was taking too many credit to worry about starting one. Then I moved to Northern Michigan, where they didn't have schools in my style, so I worked out with some friends, but nothing to serious, until my own children began to take an interest. Now I do it for them, I've started my own school and I do it for my students (I love to teach), and I do have to say that I am in better shape than I have been in for a long time, and I enjoy seeing my kids grow in the art. So I guess I have a few different reasons for why I am involved now. -
Oh my Can't help but chuckle at that one

The more you spar, the better you will become. The more people you spar, that are a higher quality (generally higher rank), the better you will become over time. Don't give up, try some of the suggestions you've received, and try to learn something every time you spar sombody, especially those that you consider to be better than you. Ask yourself why you think they are better, and then try to learn from what they are doing. Good luck, and let us know how you progress.

Basically, it's just fighting an imaginary opponent. Stand close to a wall, or in a corner, and imagine your shadow is you opponent, and just throw techniques as if you were actually in the ring. Its a great cardio workout too, if you really put some intensity into it. Stay light on the feet, and work your combinations... this is a great time too, to work on some of those combinations that you think should work, but maybe you just haven't gotten your timing down yet.

I agree that the child is the real victim here, but you are making a lot of accusations and assumptions based on three pararaphs of information. Although, your point about being a responsible parent is 100%correct!

That is a very sad story. I hope and pray that the 11-year-old and the step mother can form a closer relationship, and that they will be able to support each other through the emotional road ahead as they begin their grieving. My prayers will be with them.

Good Job Doubletwist... now you can complain if your guy doesn't win Seriously though, they expect record turnout for this election. It's pretty cool to be a part of that. Even if the other guy wins, you were a part of the process in the largest election, that will elect the most powerful man in this country, and some say, the world.

Try shadowboxing with hand weights. Do your techniques with hand and legs weights. Running your forms with hand and leg weights can help too. To really increase the speed of your technique, really just takes a lot of practice... the more you put into it... do bag work every day, push yourself every day, and you will start to see improvment.

I agree that this does sound a little suspect. You could expect a certain amount to carry over from one to the other, although, a lot of it depends on application of the technique. I know in my own training, after receiving my 1st Dan in TKD, I tried Tang Soo Do, and had some problems at first just because their techniques were thrown with just enough differences to mess me up for a couple of weeks, until I really had time to examine, and learn to execute the technique while oncorperating the differences. I'm not saying that this is what happened to her, but anyone looking at me on my first night with the Tang Soo Do club might have questioned me as well. Just another angle to look a it from.

Do you consider Pro Wrestling a martial art?
foreveryoung001 replied to dingyuan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I am not sure I would lump it in with most of the MA's that would be considered practical in a self defense situation, although it might fit in with certain Ma's like XMA, along the lines of what rb was saying... I think there would need to be some kind of implied application, other than entertainment, for it to fit into the "martial" aspect of the term Martial Arts. But I think it's like arguing semantics... different people, different deffinitions. It might be kind of fun though, to do my next self defense demo in Pro Wrestling style. Guy attacks from behind with a knife, grab a folding chair and hit him over the head... then take his belt... the kids would love it -
The last tournament I judged, I saw a 14 or 15 year old girl break her two in her breaking routine, but then went on to spar. Her toe was swollen at least three times bigger than it should have been, and was a really nasty blackish/purple color, but she hung in there and took a third in her division. I didn't judge in her ring, but she really impressed a lot of people that afternoon.

Without taking a political position, I would just like to encourage those from the U.S., who are of voting age, to remember to cast your vote. No matter who you support, it is an exciting time to view the political climate in America. Make your opinion count, and go vote
