  1. I'm wondering if rotating to your chest is the best choice. Any comments? I'm undecided on this. You may be in a better position to stand up and run, but I don't know if running is what you would want to do. No chance of getting in guard with a bear, but at least you have your arms to offer up instead of the back of your head. Personally, I'd have went for an armbar until the bear tapped out.
  2. I had a confrontation with a rottweiler. It had a pup with it that was friendly and came running up to me. So I was petting it when momma came around the corner. The dog just immediately came running in to attack. I kind of froze and kicked out at it. Being on grass I almost fell. Luckily I didn't and it backed off and snarled and snapped forward at me. It was a weird standoff. It would snarl and come in snapping. I would kick it and it would back off again. The pup was oblivious to this and was hanging out around me like nothing was happening, meanwhile momma and me where in mortal combat. I yelled and acted mean, but the dog would just keep coming in and attacking but never succeeding. I was continually backing up this whole time going to the door. Once I made it to the door I simply went inside. I called the sherrif and was told they had no animal control officer and couldn't do anything. I was advised to shoot the dog but make sure it was dead or I could get animal cruelty charges against me. Ignoring that advice, I was able to lead the puppy into my back yard and the momma followed. I locked them in. The owner came around later. (A pregnant woman) I kind of let her have it but in a nice way. Schools were out that day and the dogs could have come across a child first. End of story.
  3. lol, true. It was in my younger years. I'd said I hadn't done it in awhile. But it did create the confusion we were looking for. These days I don't street fight. I don't even get in a position to find trouble.
  4. Some non-martial arts books I've found useful: Gulag Archipelago. A sad book that will delve deep into the negative side of human psychology. When I was in a slump, one passage from this book helped me improve dramatically. It had too do with an old lady and how she handled the interrogations. Virginia's General: Robert E. Lee and the Civil War. A brief view into the mind of a great strategist. Caro's Book of Poker Tells. A great book in understanding how to interpret peoples actions. The pictures he uses are outdated.
  5. One of the things I've tried was putting on paintball headgear and having a friend shoot at us while sparring. It creates confusion, but prepare to get bruised up pretty good. We don't do this very often and haven't tried it in awhile.
  6. lol, maybe. If it was Osama bin laden...definately!
  7. Judgement is a human condition that is fostered by most activities. Do you believe your MA style is superior to any other? Do you believe a banker is morally superior to a bank robber? The truth is that knowledge is the actual cause of judgement. Forget all you know and perhaps truth will show itself.
  8. All of this talk fo ki reminds me of something I witnessed as a kid. A christian man I was working for had a man start to attack him and he rebuked him. The man fell over in pain. Was the damndest thing I'd seen. I had a new respect for the guy, but still didn't buy into Jesus. Maybe Ki and faith are interchangeable.
  9. I was walking to my car when a couple of guys came running up to me and started yelling about something like they knew me. I just told them I didn't know who the hell they were while I kept walking faster. One punched me and I ran around a car and pulled my concealed weapon. They ran very fast. I never did figure out who they were.
  10. Depends on the coach. Expect lots of conditioning and working on takedowns, or at least thats what I remember.
  11. You shouldn't be seeing too many double leg takedowns unless their is an uneven matchup. I've had quite a bit of wrestling experience and not too much Jiu Jitsu experience. From my brief comparison time frame, there are certain aspects of wrestling I need to unlearn and its a bit harder than I expected it to be to unlearn. Fortunately, other aspects of the crossover have more than made up for it, but I think the most important thing is the competitiveness of wrestling has really helped me. What weight will you be wrestling at? I never was big into the throws, but if they are working for you use them. Hopefully you will get a good coach because that makes a huge difference. My first 7 years I had average coaches, but my final 4 I had a former olympic wrestler, who had led several schools to state championships, as my coach. Oh, one more thing. Wear your head gear at all times possible. It may seem like a hassle and you may get made fun of, but don't end up like me with messed up ears.
