BJJ Tournament.
Mu Ryuk replied to Mu Ryuk's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Thanks for the support everyone! I took 1st place in my division (only one other guy). I fought at 187 pounds, just barely made light heavyweight (had to take off my shirt and belt to do it, haha). I won my fight about two minutes in by submission due to a Ezekiel Choke from the mount. I will try to put up video once I upload it (which may take a while, I just got a new camcorder, and I'm technologically impaired) and some pictures, if I can figure out how to take still frames from the video. Thanks again! -
Hey all, I'm about to leave for my first BJJ tournament. It's an in school tournament (I go to an offshoot of a large school that has two sub schools). Should be fun. Who is crazy enough to compete on six weeks of training? That's right, I am

Good that you found a new art you enjoy! I'm guessing it's a form of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu (based on the fact that your friend is a 4th dan)?

It's going to be really difficult to put a hole in someone's cheek with a fish hook...I've been fish hooked...I think the simple counter is to bite down. I personally didn't find it that painful, even though the guy had it ripping at my cheek, but maybe there is some kind of technique that it can be done with that makes it hurt more.
-
Fish Hooking is forming a hook shape with your finger and putting it inside your opponents cheek. Then you rip sideways. It doesn't hurt too much...it's actually illegal because it's a neck breaking technique. And I agree with UseoForce...MMA is the best sport in the world!

Full Contact Tournament.

Hey all, here's what went down: I dominated the striking completely, within the first 15 seconds I landed a hard spinning back kick right on his chest. I landed a good few roundhouse kicks to the body, one to the head, and a lot of punches to the body. Everything he landed on me was only glancing. Near the end of round 1 he caught one of my roundhouses and took me down. I pulled closed guard, but I wasn't any match for him on the ground. He passed to side mount and tapped me out with a Hammer Lock. I lost, but I think I did well, and I passed my own "test". I stepped up and did it. There are some pictures (2 from the fight and 1 with a friend of mine who coached me, the first three pictures) at https://www.photobucket.com/albums/v302/Tsypkin Thanks for all your support! -

Full Contact Tournament.

You mean like Kyokushin's not really full contact because you can't use hands to the head? I kid, I kid. But just because there are pads, doesn't mean it's not full contact. Amatuer Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing tournaments all use not only gloves, but shinguards (in the case of Muay Thai and Kickboxing, obviously) and headgear. They're still full contact. Thanks for the wishes of luck. -
This Saturday I'm competing in my first full contact competition. The rules are pretty wussy, but that's California for you. Kicks and punches to the body Kicks to the legs Takedowns and grappling allowed, but no striking on the ground Gear 4oz MMA gloves Shinguards Cup Mouthpiece I don't expect to win. My jiu-jitsu, especially no gi, isn't even mediocre, and my striking isn't great. I am just gonna work my takedown defense and try to land a few good shots before it goes to the ground. This tournament is a test. Not a test of skill. Not a test of ability. It's a test of heart. FIGHT OR DIE.

Wrestling = t3h 1337 d3@d1y Yes, I'd highly recommend it.

Welcome to KarateForums! I currently practice: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tang Soo Do Bahala Na Escrima I have also done some: Boxing Kickboxing Judo Wrestling (Greco-Roman/Freestyle) I agree with Sdargie, try your best to explain your style. You'd be surprised at what people here can understand. I mean hey...if we can read things like "wut mrtial art shuld i do 2 beet up ppl who i dunt like", we can probably achieve some basic understanding of what your art entails

Nope. I saw the issue the other day, but I didn't read it. I've known about the Dog Brothers for quite a while.

https://www.dogbrothers.com Dog Brothers Martial Arts is a full contact stickfighting group. Not for the faint of heart. Their motto is "Higher consciousness through harder contact.". Personally I'll stick to full contact kickboxing and MMA, but I have a lot of respect for the guys with the guts to get out there and do what they do. For gear, they wear a fencing/Kendo type helmet, some type of gloves, and that's it. Like I said, it's full contact, not for points, and they are allowed to hit with the stick, punch, kick and even grapple (they are allowed to hit with the stick on the ground). Recently the Dog Brothers are getting into something they call "Kali Tudo", which is Kali/Escrima/Arnis empty hand strategies and techniques for MMA. Personally, I don't think it will be able to hold up with the Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, etc you see in MMA competition, but hey, you never know. Either way, I have serious respect for them, not only for stepping up and doing stickfighting for real, but because they also have a seriously effective and straightforward system of Kali. ...but I'll still stick with Kickboxing/Jiu-Jitsu/MMA
