  1. does anyone know or have a website to somewhere i could learn a fan kata. i don't mean a slow tai chi form, i mean an actually kata. i've seen one once before and i asked the girl where she learned it and she said on a video so i'm thinking someone here is bound to know what i'm talking about. it was kind of fast and there were a lot of rapid stance shifting. anything you think i'd be interested in would be great.
  2. eh, a lot of other practitioners frown on this but we're MOSTLY based on Shotokan, however, my school has made self-defense a larger part of the curriculum so other styles have been thrown in. also we have a black belt club where we're exposed to more karate kata as well as other martial arts such as capoeira and wushu. sorry if you were looking for a one word answer :')
  3. you guys are good responders!
  4. i always heard open hand used as meaning no weapon, but, if that'd make it clearer, empty hand.
  5. pretty self explanatory, tell us your favorite open hand kata, maybe tell us why you like it. if it's a kata specific to your school or mayb an invention of your own, tell us about it. ummm... that's all for now. mine's gekisai if anyone was wondering. oh yea and i didn't make this a poll because i couldn't fit enough options, it wouldn't let me.
  6. yea i've had better ideas lol
  7. would you ever use a tonfa in ur non-dominant hand and let's say a sword in the dominant hand? seems like it'd be somewhat effective.
  8. suprised there weren't any fans, i mean my favorite is kamas but i'm just suprised not to see fan on here anywhere.
  9. MY school's karate (because these days it varies from place to place... a lot) they're trying their best to cover everything. obviously there are good hand and foot strikes, that's karate for you, the have grappling techniques... but some of them i would consider ineffective. it also doesn't emphasize how important footwork can be.
  10. i love the music he picked for the fight with oren ishii, i don't know how, out of all the songs in the world, he made THAT song fit a japanese sword fight so well.
  11. does anyone know where you can find fighting fans online, besides the same old dragon and ninja ones on gungfu.com? i'd be suprised if anyone's had more luck than me, they just don't seem to be out there.
  12. mmm question for you guys. it kinda depressed me to hear some weapons to be considered more difficult than others like... a chain whip person getting more respect than your everyday hardworking bo user. would you agree or disagree that every weapon can be practiced with the same about of difficulty? or do some weapons simply reach a certain point where there is no more to learn? i hate the idea of limits. wow did this get off topic, oh well you guys can respond anyway.
  13. well, i think this thread has been thoroghly exhausted
  14. ummm thank you very much my instructor said i'm a 'natural' with the bo, jee i wonder how i got that way. swallow ur pride, some ppl do well training on their own, mayb you don't, i don't know it's been a bad day i don't feel like arguing.
  15. shorin ryu definitely made a good point, instead of even bringing up the safety issue which is very small for bo (sword, completely different thing, i'm not that reckless) but i can definitely see a self-taught bo being messy. HOWEVER, i still think if you plan on taking bo at ur martial arts school but you arent a high enough rank yet, it's a great idea to mess with one just to get the feel for it, really helps to see if it's really even the weapon you want.
  16. do i really have to point this out? i thought it would be obvious. tell me how many bo related deaths you see on the news, then tell me how many car related deaths you see... ah. why don't you compare learning to write the alphabet to becoming the next picasso? according to you, it seems learning one thing by yourself is similar to learning everything that way. eh, it's probably important that i clarify that i'm not trying to be mean, it's hard to demonstrate 'tone of voice' online, i'm reading over what i'm writing and it says like i'm yelling but i'm not so... don't get mad at me ppl.
  17. why do ppl who take a martial art think that no one else can pick up a bo and not injure themself with it? if anything, i have had more injuries since i started karate than after, and i have been 'using' bo for about 4 years. (i've only been in karate for six months. you seem to forget that there was a time in (fill in where your martial art originated) when NO ONE knew how to use a weapon and they had to figure it out themselves, if anything, it helps to get used to the feel of a weapon by creating your own techiniques and kata.
  18. i like the way my sensei managed this, and i'm not sure if he even did it on purpose. there's regular class, and then we have a black belt club available to green belts and above who have shown that they have good techniques and show great interest. call it coincidence but most ppl in black belt club are in at least moderate shape, i think it's because in shape ppl practice more so they get to represent our dojo this way.
  19. everytime i've tried to paint it comes out looking horrible, i wouldn't even try but that's me.
  20. i always find a kata intimidating until i find out the overall shape of it... for example taikyoku is a giant H, then just remember each leg at a time and it sort of falls together.
  21. yea i do taikyoku with everything imaginable. (fans are actually my favorite.) and my sensei encourages that we do stuff like this. he says it goes against the school rules for him to teach me weapons until i'm in black belt club (which my mother won't let me until i get my driver's license) so until then, i'm just looking for stuff to keep me busy. but thanx i'll try sais next (never thought of those.)
  22. anyone want to explain to me a weapon kata? i'm always looking for new ones, i really don't mind which weapon... i'll take anything. if you want to explain them to me with stance, strikes, and positioning it'd be great, i can offer stuff i learned from my school too, although i only know taikyoku so far (which is why i want to learn some kata) i can still volunteer are punch reversals and stuff.
  23. thanks, i thought they were like copyrighted or something (cuz everything is these days) and my dojo was doing something illegal or who knows what. i asked my sensei once and he acted wierd so i got worried lol.
  24. does anyone else's school for some reason call taikyoku taihokyu instead? i don't know why we do this. we have a lot of name changes like that.
