anyone know the difference between shorei-ryu and goju shorei?
-
miguksaram, your profile says you study shorei-ryu, can you tell me about that style of karate?
-
can you tell be about shorei-ryu, i don't know much about it

I have a couple questions about forms/kata competitions. how long would it take to train for a novice division competition if you are willing to work at it like 6 days a week? also, what styles of MA are better suited for forms/kata competitions? 'thanks
-
well i've looked online at videos of katas, and some have been very slow, like a strike, block, kick, but it's like slow, and then i've seen some footage where it's like "rapid fire" menuvers. so i don't know if that's because of the style of martial art, that the kata was performed so fast, or katas can be performed at the speed of the individual

is sport karate it's own genre of martial arts, or are there styles of martial arts that are considered "sport"
-
Are their certain styles of martial arts that have "fast pace" katas/forms?
-
so I guess it's safe to assume that XMA is more of performance/presentation/looking cool martial arts. Showy... Flashy... "ooo"s and "ah"s style where martial arts meets the gymnastics team. interesting

does anyone know of any shorei-ryu schools and/or instructors in connecticut?
-
can anyone who studies goju-ryu tell me a little bit about it. Like I've read that it incorporates basically everthing, kicks, strikes, hard/soft, linear/circular movements, is this true?
-
I was wondering, is shorin-ryu and shorei-ryu the same thing?
-
I'm a super noob and dork. I know. But, what makes a strike "hard" or "soft"?
-
I've been researching various styles of karate online and they all discuss linear and circular movemnts, what does that mean? Obviously linear would mean like a direct line and circular, in a circle... but I still don't get the connection to karate... sort of (I hate to sound like such a dork for asking)

Does anyone know anything about xtreme martial arts, XMA? Is it new, or still in the process of becoming popular, and what does it involve, kicks, strikes, weapons, acrobatics, etc? Does anyone train in it already?
-
I don't know much about competitions, but I was wondering, do all styles of martial arts compete in one large tournament, or are their specific tournaments aimed to only certain styles like kempo, TDK, judo, karate, etc. I'm also curious about kata competitions and forms competitions, if anyone has competed in those, can you tell me what it's like. 'thanks

well I'd like to have self defense, 'cause in a year i'm leaving for college and well, a girl needs to defend herself in the world. I'd also like to enhance flexibility and maybe try my hand at acrobatic things. Another goal is to channel frustrations. I hate to be some uber fan, but I guess I like the "flashy" style of karate. I think it would be an interesting experience to train and if I like it, compete in forms competitions, I've seen some, and I was totally fascinated by it all

yeah, i've been curious about shorei-ryu. I hate to be a st00b, but I first heard of shorei-ryu after seeing that xma show on discovery. Matthew Mullins said she studied shorei-ryu, and I've seen his demo videos and I like his style. I like his fluididty, acrobatics, and form. Shorei-Ryu obviously still exists 'cause in Illinois, they have the well known school called Sharkey's, which is where, I believe Matt Mullins trained. So obviously Shorei-Ryu still exists, I read on some sites online that Shorei-Ryu and Shorin-Ryu are the same thing, but as I continued my search, they became very different and infact there are four types of karate that emerged from Okinawa, they were goju-ryu, shorei-ryu, shorin-ryu, and uechi-ryu. Someone said that goju-ryu was probably the most similar, but I would hope that someone who has trained in shorei-ryu can post some more information about it

Does anyone know anything about the style of xtreme martial arts, XMA? I'm a cheerleader (don't comment on that) and well I'd really like to learn martial arts, so I'd like to find a style that would compliment my involvement with cheerleading and vice versa. I would kind of like to learn a more acrobatic style of martial arts, and I think maybe XMA is like that, but I'm not sure, I'm just looking for some clarification or suggestions. Also, can anyone name MA styles that are more concerned with fluidity, speed, and forms. 'thanks

anyone know anything about Okinawan karate styles, i've been looking online and at first I found out that there were two main styles, shorei-ryu and shorin-ryu, then i went to another site that said there were four main styloes, goju-ryu, shorei-ryu, shorin-ryu and uetchi-ryu (or something like that, I forget). I'm sort of confused. I would like to learn Okinawan Karate and just want to learn more. thanks

Alright, I'm super new to martial arts, as in, i've never taken a class but i'd like to. alright, i've done some research on the topic of martial arts and correct me if i'm wrong be everything like kempo, kenpo, judo, jeet kune do, karate, are all forms of martial arts. okay, basically i want to learn martial arts to learn how to defend myself, and i think it's something that would help me deal with "life's little troubles." anyways, I really don't know how martial arts works like in a sense of competition. so i have a few questions and if anyone can answer them, that'd be awesome. 1. I want to learn forms, does each form of martial arts have their own specific forms/kata, or is that only for certain types like taekwondo and/or kempo? also, when competing, are there like specific comeptitions like only contests for students of taekwondo or are their open forms/kata competitions? 2. What is the best style for learning kata/forms? 3. which style is best if one would want to compete in kata/forms? 4. how long would it take to train for an amature competition? any information that would help me would be greatly appreciated, i've tried looking this all up online but the more i research the more confused i get!
