  1. Well I'm back after a long absence. Since the last time I was here I have gotten new orthodics and gotten used to them. For me it was more challenging than I thought. Basically I have had to learn how to walk much differently, but for the better. Now I am utilizing my trunk and quads much more than I did in the past. Anyways, thanks everyone for your help. I am going to try to get started soon. I am leaning towards Kung Fu, as a friend of mine is into it and I like what I have heard from him. Also I wouldn't mind knowing someone going in to help guide me along.
  2. I became a member a while back, had a cup of coffee, and haven't been back until now. I had wanted to focus on school and other pressing responsibilities before focusing on Martial Arts. Well I am ready now.
  3. Thanks for the help everyone. The main problems that I have due to flat feet are underdeveloped core muscles. My hips, quads, and buttocks are underutilized due to my foot structure (poor muscle coordination). I can overcome this via wearing my orthodics while getting proper exercise, such as a MA.
  4. Thanks for the input guys. I am a college student so distance and finances will play a large factor into my decision. I don't want to be to idealistic about what MA I choose, as long as I get my tail out there. Otherwise I'll never get started. This being said I am very open to trying any discipline. What are ISKA and Tang Soo Do? Thanks
  5. Good luck, that's an extremely tough school to get into. If you ever want to visit it, PM me, I live about 10 min away from the campus. Also, I'm a stones throw away from Haverford College, another top liberal arts college. As far as the SAT's go, I took em once and got a 1320. I did better on the ACT though, scoring 33 out of 36. Enough to get me into a good school despite my lazy high school career. Which leads me to why I am getting into MA, the discipline and focus. But I digress. Good luck to all of those getting ready for college. It's a challenging and exciting time of your life.
  6. I'm from Ardmore, just outside of Philly. Does anyone know of any good MA schools in this area? I haven't decided what style I will go with but since I'm just getting started, convenience will be a huge plus.
  7. Thanks everyone. Looks like I'll have to find an old pair of Asics. I'm looking forward to getting started. Thanks for the help.
  8. Hey everyone, I am very interested in taking up a martial art. However I am concerned that my flat feet may hold me back. Currently I worthless without my orthodics, which require that I wear shoes. Are there any MA's out there that would allow me to wear shoes? Or are there techniques I can utilize to overcome my flat feet? Thanks
  9. Hey everyone, I'm a student in Philly looking to get involved with a martial art. I desire and need the discipline, focus, and conditioning that they provide. Plus I my interest in eastern cultures is growing after taking Chinese. A couple things about me. 1.) I have wrestled in the past. It's the closest thing I've done to a martial art. 2.) I have flat feet. And I mean FLAT feet. I am worried that my need for orthodics may prevent me from getting involved in a "shoeless" discipline. Which to my limited knowledge, means just about all of them. Well I'll see you around.
