  3. I have noticed rust stains on my Shureido Sai. Anything I can use to remove them?
  4. My favs are Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro. I also enjoy fanatasy MA films such as Crouching Tiger... Hero, and House of Flying Daggers
  5. Ok first of all... It's "sai" not "sais" that is incorrect grammar because sai is already plural. Second, It would be idiotic to "blade" a pair of sai...What do you think is going to happen when you retract them? (hint: you will cut your arm) Third, get some martial arts instruction before buying a weapon you know nothing about. And lastly....Stop watching DareDevil and Elektra...They are crappy movies with crappy martial art sequences, and you shouldn't be inspired by them
  6. I am very fond of electronica/dance and 80's pop. (Depeche Mode, Human League, Information Society) I was flipping channels, and I came across the Karate Kid...And I thought the music played right before the tournament where hes at that arcade trying to get with that blonde girl was really catchy. Anyone knows what it is? If you do, please tell!
  7. He asked him what sub-style, and the teacher smiled and said: ":Shorin Ryu"...he said he is taught by Patrick McCarthy (Im sure all of you have heard about him.) I have numerous books on by McCarthy but he never maentions what sub-cat of Shorin he is. Anyone have a clue?
  8. My karate school is *. Our instructor is senile and derranged. He claims everyday we will spar, and then when class begins with the usual streches he takes off like a bat-out-of-hell, goes to the changing room, puts his normal clothes on and runs out the door. This has happened for 2 consecutive months. When he leaves, the highest-ranking member who has been in the school for like 10 years takes charge and teaches us basic drills. I have only learned 2 kata in the whole time being there, because instructor is never there, and the senior member wants to do basic drills like blocking then punching. Its been like this since March. When quiestioned why he for an unknown reason leaves in the midst of class, he looks at you in the eye and mumbles something incoherrent. I'd change schools but I have a contract. BJJ has been my mainstay for 12 years, and I decided to take on karate, to get a feel for kicks, etc. The few times that he has taught, he makes us all grab 12 pound medecine balls and play catch with them (literrally) The school has lost so many memebers...Only about 6 remain. 1 more month, and contract is over. Thank God.
  9. Hello all. My friend is thinking about signing up at a dojo. The style teaches the following kata: Matusmura Seisan, Matsumura Chinto, Matsumura Patsai, Chibana Kusanku, Rohai, Wankuan, Wansu, Wanduan, and Ananko. He asked his teacher what the style was and he said "Shorin-Ryu" well...there are over 10 sub-cats of Shorin...Does anyone know what this falls under?
  10. I own the following: A pair of Shureido Chrome Sai (20'') A pair of Shureido Natural Sai (22'') A pair of Meirin Sangyo Sai (19'') A Japanese Shiro-kashi (white oak) Custom Rokushaku Bo from Sei Do Kai A Purpleheart Rokushaku Bo from Murasaki Kobudo. A pair of 21'' Shiro Kashi Tunfua from Seido Kai A pair of Aka Kashi Nunchaku from Ebogu. 2x Japanese Shiro Kashi Bokuto's from Bokkenshop.com A cheap white oak 4 ft jo from Kwon. A Chen Musashi Dai-Katana 2x Bulletwood Tanbo's from Aikiwood. Hmm....That is about it.
  11. Hello... From my expirience in some kendo, and bo-jutsu, white oak has always out-preformed re doak in contact sparring...Now, I payed 95 dollars for a purple-heart bo, and (supposedly it is way stronger than evergreen oak like red, white) but when browsing a shureido site, I noticed they charge the same amount for a red oak bo!...Is there something really good about their red oak? ps- I know the dif between jap red oak, and processed red oak...But still...Why so expensive?
  12. The shaolin ones? They can be up to around 9-10...The reason japanese are longer is because they were used in the frontlines...The more range the better. The monks never engaged in "wars" so to speak, so they really had no need for the length...I dunno, maybe ask your sifu, you will get alot of dif answers
  13. th emei would never work in a real-life situation
  14. ugh...spend your money on something more practical...a bo/jo or escrima sticks perhaps.
  15. Depends on your budget...You can get a reasonably cheap set on ebay or karatedpot, or awma of chrome (made of pot-steel) for around 30-40 dollars. Now if you are serious, then go with either weapons connection (energy sai of agena) or shureido...you cant go wrong with either
