  1. Your damn right u can run! Most girls I know hate guys who have to prove their macho by fighting. Besides the girls arent going to date a guy with no teeth. The best defense MA teches is self confidence which means u only fight when ABSOLUTELY necessary, u don't have to prove anything.
  2. For MT u should be over ten yrs and u have to use protective equipment. But u can usually get your coach \ sensei to ask around and see if other olaces have a fighter for u.
  3. Ah Botosai! We love guys like u here! Do u honostly think u are the only guy here who's been in a lot of street fights and has fought different styles? NO! U just haven't been in enough fights or contests otherwise u would have had that arrogance beaten out of u. Your "martial warrior spirit" sounds like plain old trash talk. Who the hell is your sensei\instructor that taught u this attitude? U sound like one of the bad guys off of Karate kid! But we love the big mouths because they give us something to chuckle at
  4. Scream for help and run! I'm dead serious! If your fighting multiple opponents your likely to get creamed. Also if u go back throgh the archives here this is probably one of the most discuused topics. But to reiterate good, fast hand combinations combined with MT clinching, elbows and knees and low kicks only r your best bets for stand up. Wrestling sprawls and takedown defenses to keep from being thrown on the ground. Then BJJ for if u do get on the ground. Trying to kick someone in the junk usually only works if their not ready for u Humans instinctively protect their eyes and genitals. But it's a good fake to open up other areas to attack
  5. Listen Botasai, lemme tell u a story/stories. My TKD master talks about the korean army TKD team going to thailand to fight the thai army MT team. They got pretty beat up, but they didn't lose all the fights. My master said the first couple of guys got destroyed but by the time his fight came around he saw a way to win. For two rounds he took the worst beating of his life then at the beginning of the third the MT fighter rushed in to finish him and got a spinning back kick right in the gut. KO. This was how I beat my guy on the street. Now my MT master talks about fighting the Korean TKD team when he was in the Thai army. The TKD team put on a breaking expo before the fight. The Thai guys were amazed and a little scared> I'm talking blocks of ice and cinder blocks. The fights start and not a single Muy Thai guy closes to punch or grapple. They win all the fights with leg kicks. Now between these two old school masters were talking a combined knowledge of about 75 years experience. Both admired the other style and both saw ways around what the perceived to be the others advantage. Why can't u?
  6. I'm looking to join a BJJ school and I finally found one with Gracie afiiliations, but during my search I saw a lot of people claiming to be BJJ practitioners! How can this be? BJJ is relatively new on the scene so how come everybody and his dog is a BJJ master? How do u tell the genuine article from the crap?
  7. Sorry guys, you're wrong. I've used TKD in street fights and won. Now I'm a big MT fanatic but even my MT master says that TKD has some good techniques. After taking five different MA's and being in street fights theres always stuff u can use.
  8. Yeah I have, the throw was smooth, but my landing was not It's a really good experience because it give u something to aim for.
  9. vERY cOOL AND thanks. I always knew Mas was one bad dude. I bought this really old karate book from the 60's and the author trained with him. Now I really want to spar with some of your guys.
  10. Why don't u guys just make up your own katas? Thats why I quit karate, the katas had no relation to actual sparring or fighting. Are there more realistic Katas out there? Is anybody using actual street experience to come up with new Katas?
  11. I agree punch! But if i had a choice between a good body shot or a head shot I would take the body shot in a street fight. I have never seen one used in a street fight but Ive used my kness in one and winded the guy so bad he crawled off. Also when the cops showed up I was blood spatter free. And I've seen lots of guys take terrible punishment to the head and kepp going. Never seen anybody get sent to the ER yet for a body shot. Thats good.
  12. Hey Profacci, as a Muy Thai fighter I agree with u. There are good fighters and there are bad fighters, style means little. I think what makes both these arts so effective is the FULL CONTACT. There are no delusions about techniques because they either work or they don't and we prove this in the ring. And to Traditional Fighter, Muy Thai has almost every technique in the book if u study under a good master. This includes grappling, weapons and every punch and kick known to man. What u see is the sport and not the art. It wouldn't be a sport if u used your technique to kill and maim evertime u stepped in the ring.
  13. Glad you had a good time Is there going to be any broadcasts or tapes of the matches. And also are there any guys at your dojo interested in fighting other styles? Not a whos better thing but a "wow, I could really use that!" thing.
  14. :lol:Yeah, he goes to bangkok to raise money for the temple and ends up fighting in a bar and getting chased by street gangs. Is that it? He jumps through this hoop of barbed wire as he's running through the streets.
  15. Hey I just watched this cool Thai movie (can't pronounce or spell it) about a Muy Thai fighter your basic "kung-fu" movie plot; but some really cool moves almost like kung-fu. I watched it with my master and he said the actor was a genuine master and that these exotic moves did exsist but were being lost because they were basically for war and muy thai was is now more of a sport. Do any of u guys still learn these moves? Do any of u guys ever use them? I've learned a few like HANUMAN HUN FAH which is your extreme jumping knees and flying elbows. I can't put them all down but I'd like to hear if any of u guys have any experience with the exotics.
  16. I hear what your saying! But Isn't the whole point of studying MA's to basically broaden our options when it comes to violent altercations? I mean I've had my share of street fights and because of MA's I was able to use my experience to control the situation. I haven't been hit yet (knock on wood ). I agree that certain styles lend themselves to "mastering" street fights better eg Muy Thai in which everything except the biting and butting is regularly practiced. But I wouldn't discount other styles being "unappropiate" or unrealistic. They just take longer to master. I've met practitioners of many different style who struck me as DEADLY chaps although they practised TKD, Shotokan and Aikido. All of whom had used their styles in street fights, some of them life and death. Why fight the other guys fight when u can manoever him into the situation which gives u the best chance? Isn't that why we do this stuff?
  17. Well, I took the Aikido and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and thought it looked cool. But I preferred Hapkido which basically has no real uniform and Included biting, broken bottles etc. A lot more practical than Aikido. You're right about the pre-fight stuff though. I was really impressed by the way aikido practitioners were able to close distances and step past attacks. A useful skill in any martial art. I think u should take it. The breathing exercises are excellent. An MT guy would probably still kick Aikido butt, but i think it would be really useful for situations when u don't want to break their face with your knee. (hence avoiding painful litigation.)
  18. I studied both and in street fights I've combined them. I use the TKD kicks as my long distance or counter attack weapons, and the Hapkido as my grappling\close in technique. The kicks taught in hapkido are identical to TKD and there are also a lot of judo throws. For stopping a fight before it starts I use Hapkido wrists and joint locks to convince my opponents that to continue the altercation would be stupind and painful. If I had to choose for self defense I would have to go with Hapkido. For just plain fun, TKD.
  19. I know its from malaysia and is similar to kali\escrima. Also they have that cool kris knife. I would totally check it out. I'm going to sign up for bjj with kali on the weekends. Now that my master is moving I need a hardcore combat port but I want to take kali on the weekends. The stick and knife not only look cool but are probably the two weapons u can always find and will most likely encounter. Man, if i was rich all I'd do is study MA all day.
  20. I know exactly what u mean man! I think that we MT guys are usually so focused on the practical aspect of training we get a hankering for some old style mr. miyagi training. U know, cool sounding and looking techniques with a nice outfit. Something with flash! If theres one thing about MT it doesn't look very cool, just painful. However it's hard to go back because u usually get fed up with practising forms and katas which usually have very little 'practical' purpose.
  21. I read somewhere that the greatest fighter in the world does'nt fear the second best fighter in the world, he fears the worst, because no idea what the worst fighter in the world is going to do. Trust me, the idea here is to dodge and block your unworthy opponents. To create oppurtunities for your attacks by aggressive positioning. If thats all u have to work with its better than nothing
  22. Do u mean that the instructors try to make it mystical? Or that they seem to give too much instruction for what seems to be a simple movement? Or that they call it fancy names? If it is the first part then I agree with u? As for the second then I would say that it takes years and thousands of repetetions too perfect even the simplest punch or kick. A good example of this would be Tiger Woods, he still gets coaching for all his swings even though he's the best in the world. The third reason would bring us to an interesting topic: Is our western ideals of efficency and simplicity destroying the tradition of MA. It is especially bad in Muy Thai. I wanted to learn the traditional names for our MT moves because I was interested in MT history. One example is the uppercut elbow or sok soi. The traditional name for this is Tak Mala which means flower in the ear. The legend goes that a princess was putting a flower in her ear as someone tried to attack her, and she knocked him out. I think thats a pretty cool story and there are dozens like it. I also think that we as MA's should learn all the fancy names for even simple moves as it keeps the history and traditions of MA alive for those we may teach.
  23. Hey, is it in Alberta? I would love too see this live! PS My gym just closed but we used to do pads every day. And also, good luck.
  24. We just prepared a bunch of fighters for some matches at my Muy Thai gym. We didn't have a lot of time to get ready so we came up with an abbreviated program to get them ready quickly. So here it is! Running: Sprints and jog (uphill) if possible 3 to 5 mile a day. Pad work: Just as seven star said we use the 3min round and 1 minute rest technique with the music. This means a continuous 3 mins no breaks and continuous movement. Your target has to be continuosly moving so u can constantly adjust your footwork. Full power on all techniques! At least five rounds a night. Sparring: Full contact, heavy sparring with pads to start. Then light contact movement sparring in the weeks before the fight (to avoid injury). U have to get hit to learn to deal with the pain. No other way! Techniques: U should concentrate on your two or three favourite techniques\combos(at least three attacks continuos) and your basic jab\punch\block. Most MA's get beaten by the boxing aspect more than the kicking. Develop a good guard and footwork. Most of all footwork, footwork, footwork. If u cant move your dead. The type of fight: DO NOT FIGHT A MUY THAI FIGHT YOUR FIRST TIME OUT! It's completely different from the type of sparring your used to in TKD or kickboxing. The low kicks, knees, elbows and clinching have to be learn't or they will result in a very unpleasant surprise for u. Get a friend to hold pads for u and if u can't get someone to fight full contact with u, then let them hit u full power while u return light attacks.
