  1. U guys r lucky. My Arjun jumps on me when we do the stretching, we do at least 20 min worth. He gave me one stretch designed for pregnant women(I'm a guy) and made me do it against a wall. I couldn't walk straight for 2 days. Luckily the little Thai masochist only weighs 130lbs, but my flexibility increased dramatically after only a month.
  2. KI is an abbreviation for Muyt Thai freaks Killer instinct, not Ki as in spiritual power. I was asking him what he meant by Killer instinct.
  3. My master taught me a type of meditation for getting my body as well as my mind back in alignment. Sit on the floor in the standars lotus, back straight, staring at a spot on the floor about a foot ahead of u. Just breathe but concentrate on every breath as the only thing, in out etc. This posture lets your bones and muscles realign after training and your mind clears itself. U can also do it eating, concentrating on each bite instead of breathing.
  4. Actually it's when your sparring it's most important. In MT we do it like boxers, exhaling on the attack. It's one of the hardest things to remember when the adrenaline is flowing and so must be constantly practised.
  5. Were so secret we have a Website? HA! HA! This is like the bad old eighties again where everyone was studying some new and secret form, and consequently getting their butts kicked.
  6. Hey Muy Thai freak could u clarify the KI a bit more. Is it aggressive ness or the focus of going after your opponent? If it's aggressiveness then i gotta disagree. One the things the full contact guys know pretty well is the ability to stay calm and cool under pressure. U know let the other guy flail away for a while, getting tired and then going in for the kill. If its focus(stubborness) then I agree. One minded dedication of taking the opponent out no matter how hard u get hit. Or is it a combination of both?
  7. Actually D u hit\get hit harder with gloves than u do bareknuckled. U just end to get more cuts.
  8. I never carry anything around, except the Maglite in my car. But there were a couple of instances where I definitely wanted a weapon and one where carrying a weapon definitely saved my bacon. I think it's a bad idea generally but there are extenuating circumstances and were here to discuss all the options. Oh yeah, a home made sap/blackjack is good too. A slim strong tube filled with sand or buckshot.
  9. Whenever I meet another MA at a social event it's hard for us to go back to talking to anyone else. There is a MA brotherhood but I have to say I can be one of those jerks too. I love getting to fight with people from other styles and I think sometimes I come across as some kind of psycho . I'm also a born again MT guy and keep hounding people to come and try it. Sometimes u can take passion for your MA too far like I do and end up alienating other MA's.
  10. :DWell as usual I agree with Mart. After taking five other MA's and then going to MT it was incredible. Everything made sense instantly and then I got in the ring and hit as hard as i could and got hit back. Every flaw in my technique, my attitude and conditioning becomes so clear (after regaining conciousness). I began to learn what styles and techniques suited me best and this was a daily and weekly thing not the 3 month competetion. I lived Muy Thai even eating every evening meal with my master and hearing the history of it. MT u complete me . Now my gym is closed and my Master has moved I know exactly what to look for in my next MA. FULL CONTACT. ALL THE TIME. I never have to wonder how I will perform in a real fight, I WILL ATTACK and let the dice roll. All my previous street fights I now see as lucky escapes before I did MT. For u TMA's out there I suggest u give it a shot. I still love my TMA's but full contact answered alot of questions I had about myself and if I could really perform and take the pain.
  11. One Great weapon (if u really want to carry one) is a disposable scalpel. U can't carry any type of weapons on international flights anymore as the paranoia is so high and security at the airports will hassle u. Put the disposable scalpel in your first aid kit were it belongs. U can cut it down and make a little plastic sheath for it and sneak it in anywhere. I know it sounds ninja like but it is an extremely effective last ditch weapon which needless to say is extremely sharp and can do major damage. NOTE: SELF DEFENSE ONLY. Weapons related injuries means youve taken any altercation from misdemeanor to serious crime. This is why most MA weapons are illegal in most countries, (including the butterfly knife) because many gangs have been using them.
  12. Oh yeah! Drunken Monkey I pretty much agree with everything u say, but if we all agreed no one would chat on this site and we wouldn't have great threads like these So for the greater good I will play Devils Advocate (ie JERK) and say that your full of crap and some styles make for good punching bags. eg every wing chun guy who tried MMA. Every Karate guy who tried MMA (I'm talking purist here not multi disciplined). Still love me?
  13. Do u guys train full contact? If so how full and with what rules? (reach for the bait and stop being so bloody intelligent and sporting ). Also if youre a average guy who go's out in public there is a chance u might get in a fight. However will that fight be life or death? Probably not, just an altercation. If I use my MT skills the guy is probably going to get KO'd or won't be able to walk on one leg. However if I use a knifehand strike to his throat he will probably suffer severe if not fatal damage and my MT skills will do little against the cops or the 6 guys in the prision showers. By using my style (theoretically) I have won the fight using techniques I've learned and used in full contact. I know how hard to hit and how to protect myself. I have also not killed my opponent using a deadly technique which I have never used on a resisting individual. How bout them apples delta PS GO FLAMES GO!
  14. I like it as a means of starting an attack routine. MT teaches aggresiveness and a straight blast is a good way to start an attack with two caveats 1)must be followed by combinations 2)not used too many times (as with any attack) because your opponent will be waiting for u to pounce. It's especially good at the beginning of a fight for those of us aggressive fighters because its fast and usually sets the other guy back on his heels, but it is the expoitation of the oppurtunities of this attack and not the attack itself which I like.
  15. If the entire class is fairly advanced then the students are expected to do their own warmup. However MT requires super conditioning and we usually do 1 hr of intense exercise then drills etc. Ask the instructor what the deal is. Forget about how the gym looks. The hotter the better. Some of the schools I attended couldnt afford the rent so we trained outside. And talk to the other students. If they all act like macho jerks then leave. Most good schools the students are eager to talk to u and tell u how great their school is.
  16. I swear, I begin to think this belt system has become just a marketing tool. An advancement every three months? R u kidding? At this rate what the heck are u really learning in terms of MA's. If we are all agreed that MA's are primarily for defense aren't u a bit worried that your quick belts are focusing on form instead of function. There should be two belts white and black. And if u get a black belt in less than 5 years of constant traing then u should worry about the quality of your gym. 7 to 8 yrs is more like it. And it's not about skill only. It's about dedication, discipline and sacrifice to attain the highest level. Thank God I don't have to deal with this anymore. The only belt I want now is the title belt I can actually win in a full contact match.
  17. Sorry to burst your bubble Delta But how come we dont see these sort of techniques in MMA. I mean I've seen lots of bear hugs and rear standing chokes but nothing resembling your video. Also the last kenpoist Iv'e seen in MMA was that guy who beat up Yarlborough because the fatty couldn't move around. If it's such a kick * style where are your UFC fighters or Pride or K1. Don't want your head getting too big and yopur just too good an opponent to let off the ropes
  18. Welcome, from your brief post it sounds like your up for the challenge. If u like the weapons, then Shaolin sounds like a good bet. For the not seriously damaging the opponent then Aikido. It doesnt matter what u take as long as u enjoy it and have a good instructor. Stay away from places that promise quick advancement or instant self defense. Shop around and always take the instructor over the style. If u get a good vibe from the school and the teacher then youve found your place.
  19. :DGood story! The same thing happened to a friend of mine but with a bad ending. He saw this guy beating up his girlfriend outside a house party, he confronted the guy and ended up knocking him down. The guy pressed charges and my buddy got thrown in jail. Luckily at the time he was still a Juvie. Lesson, always press charges first.
  20. As pure entities neither one of these historicla figures were admirable. The samurai turned Japan into a war zone for hundreds of years and as in all most wars it was the poor peasants who were slaughtered. The ninja were assasins and spies who did the dirty work for Samurai lords. What we should do is extract those virtues which we admire like discipline and dedication
  21. :lol:U know, I've rarely seen street fights end on the ground, that is both people not the poor fool whos been KO'd say about 15%. Dont get me wrong: I think it 's essential to learn ground skills but I would concentrate more on escaping the ground and getting back up in regards to self defense. My personal nightmare is being stomped into hamburger by a group of punks. I've seen this happen to people a few times and it ain't pretty. In todays world I think u have to assume on group confrontations and train for that scenario. Here in Canada an North America in general the gangs of wannabe gansters is becoming a real problem. They are the one u usually have trouble with and these guys have no honour.
  22. Yeah the movie was alright but the history behind it was wrongo. The Japanese hired the British to train their Navy and the Germans to train their Army. As for the samurai they deserved to be wiped out. The samurai class kept Japan in a state of almost constant warfare for almost 600 years and only defended the country once and were saved from the mongols by a typhoon. They spent most of their history killing each other and the peasants. Most of the MA's that most of us study are ways for ordinary peasants to defend against these warrior classes. As for the "true meaning of MA's" MA's are a system of techniques used to defeat and enemy. All MA's adopt some philosophies of the culture behind it but I don't believe they form the core of the system. Most of us on this website are westerners and have a Judeo\Christian upbringing which doesn't prevent us from practicing or adding to our arts.

  25. :bawling:Yes, I too have been kicked, punched, KO'd, squashed, joint locked and humiliated by the best. But I've never lost on the street (knock on wood) so I guess it's true what they say. "Whatever doesn't kill u makes u wish u were dead."
