  1. In a previous posting regarding World Oyama Karate vs Kyokushin, I mentioned that we had one of Sensei Fred Buck's students join our dojo in San Francisco, when the Sacramento Kyokushin school closed down. I stated that the student thought WOK in San Francisco was more technical than the Kyokushin training he had received in Sacramento and that this student preferred it. This could be misconstrued as me (or the student) "dissing" Fred Buck's school. This is NOT the case. This student has nothing but the very highest regard for Fred Buck and the school. I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight and to publicly apologise to Fred Buck and any of his students who may have thought I was knocking their school or their teaching methods. I hope we have the opportunity to train or compete against each other in the future. Osu! ET
  2. Kevin, Mas Oyama was Korean. He was adopted by Soshu's family so Soshu and Saiko Shihan are essentially his half brothers. He took the name Oyama from their family. Get a copy of the 1970s "Hardest Karate" Vol 2. This shows the then Saiko Shihan of Kyokushin (Soshu) and Saiko Shihan training Shihan Miura. Get yerself to San Francisco June 12th for our first tournament Osu! ET

  4. Dijita, There will be semi-knockdown too, so come on over, you'll be fine. Besides, San Francisco is a much nicer place than LA OSU! ET
  5. Dijita, We are hosting the first San Francisco open knockdown championships in June. All styles are welcome but we are fighting Kyokushin rules. Fighters are coming from Japan, and all over the US. You are more than welcome. Osu! ET
  6. Are we back on this subject AGAIN ? For those who missed it last time http://www.mmanews.com/news/other/headlines/87955674.shtml Osu! ET
  7. Paul, World Oyama Karate, San Francisco is hosting it's first tournament in late February/March 2005. We will be having semi-knockdown (kids and adults) and knockdown(adults only). So far several dojos have been invited including Karate Juku from San Diego, World Oyama Karate Atlanta and Alabama, Kyokushin LA and Enshin SF. You would be more than welcome Osu! ET
  8. Whenever I mention other styles or dojos to my sensei, his reaction is always the same: "Oh really? - how do they fight" I guess you can see what's important to us Osu! ET
  9. In our style (and kyokushin) we are taught that all punching power comes from the legs and all kicking power comes from the upper body. So it doesn't matter what punch you throw. If it doesn't start in your ankles and come up through your knees and your hips you will not have enough power. Gyakuzuki espescially Osu! ET

  12. Are you pivoting the supporting foot when delivering a high roundhouse? You supporting heel should end up pointing towards the target if you are doing it right Osu! ET
  13. I was joking Angela, 'cause I knew I'd get a rise out of you or bird Osu! ET
  14. Kumite is traditional Sport karate is based upon pads, head gear, pulling punches and point system tournaments. You'll have to ask the shotokan guys about it - I don't do it Osu! ET
  15. You need to spar with someone of high enough grade that can exercise precise control on their fighting with you and "allow" you to hit them without hurting you back. Once you realise that the other guy isn't going to harm you, you will be more relaxed and think less about getting hit and more on your own technique. This is my experience and the way I spar with lower belts now. Osu! ET
