Apoligies for not having posted enough info. Red Gate are a club that supposedly practice Wa Du Ryu in scotland but they seem to be no more than an undiciplined and old fashioned boxing club.

I have a relative that is a member of the JKA and from what she tells me it seems as if you would be just as well going out and buying a black belt. They seem to tell their students that they are the be all and end all of martial arts and that they were the first karate group registered. I beg to differ.........

My instructor has shown me all the excericises in the style but I wanted to research it further and see if their are any techniques that have perhaps been forgotten through time and instruction..........

What is the story with this club? I've been and trained with them and I really beleive they need to change their habbits.

do's karate have groundfighting moves
Okinawan Warrior replied to martialartsresearcher's topic in Karate
In my DoJo but not allways taught in the style we have alot of Judo and Jujitsu moves added. Grappling makes up bout 20% of our class. -
If we train very heavily we will wear boxing gloves and occasionally head gaurds, for full contact we occasionally wear mitts and no punching to the head is allowed....... point sparring is non or semi contact which can result in little more than a bloody nose.

Confidence will build in karate provided you dont have some show of out to prove to the world that hes a complete NED. Pads arnt really needed if both fighters are aware of the conditions. Also it often comes down to, you either have it or you don't. The best thing you can do is keep going even if you do get knocked around (although if it is a good school you wont)

In GoJu Ryu you must attend 22 lessons before you can sit another kyu grade...... Also once you get into Dan grades their are minimum age limits.......

Shaolin-Do

dialects change though, okinawa speak japanese but its different from that of the rest of japan so surely its possible that they could incorporate a word, doesnt kanji allways have two meanings for everything? -
I'd say Karate was far superior than Kickboxing. Karate has many more moves and much more knowledge. Kickboxers tend to have no control what so ever and have to make contact where as karate can stop the kick without trying to kill someone if needed. I have been to quite a few kickboxing classes and found them to be nothing more than fitness classes with a few bad techniques added in. Of course it all comes down to opinion, I've allways beleived that Kickboxing comes from Karate-Do

Shaolin-Do

Just because the name is a mixture of the two (chinese and japanese) doesnt mean it is crap. Okinawa is part of japan but preferes to trade with china rather than japan...... it is possible for a name to be a mixture of the two. -
I know the story as I have to study history in my class but it still doesnt answer my question........ Were they two seperate styles? and where did they come from? i.e. what city or part of china?

How can fighting in the street be a misuse of the art? is it not self defence? I understand that going out into the street looking for a fight is a misuse but not simply fighting in the streets. David Steel Shodan Okinawan GoJu Ryu Karate-Do SGKA - IOGKF - OTGKA

Muwashi geri to the thigh (inner or outer) and to the body, one or two of these and it quickly drains the power from the opponent. For non contact Oraken to the temple is quicker than a jap i find...... David Steel Shodan Okinawan GoJu Ryu Karate-Do SGKA

Can anyone tell me if these were oiginally two seperate styles or if they have allways been one. This is where GoJu Ryu comes from. Also can anyone tell me where the style(s) of kung fu originated? David Steel Shodan Okinawan GoJu Ryu Karate-Do SGKA

Makoto, not to start an arguement but if your planning on getting anywhere in karate the Dojo Kun is what you should model yourself on. I can assure you that the people who made it followed it. Perhaps further down the line in you training you will learn more about the Traditional side of karate. David Steel Shodan Okinawan GoJu Ryu Karate-Do SGKA

I am definatly going to Okinawan but so far the cheapest deal i've got on airline tickets is roughly 2 grand return. Was hoping to get there a little cheaper since there will be lots of things to bring back. Are there any young Shodans going to the course that I may be able to talk to now as i'm allways late in making new friends during training......
