Don't get me wrong, I'm not bad mouthing BBM. It's just not MY thing.

I subscribe to a magazine call “CLASSICAL FIGHTING ARTS”. I really like it but it only comes out quarterly. You can get back issues from https://www.dragon-tsunami.org. Not a bad wed site either.

Wash it in hot water and dry it on high heat. It might take a few times but it should shrink. You can also have the cuffs altered. I personally like my gi to fit very loose.

They're everywhere. I see them at every koshikai that I go to. Typically they can spar well, but they take liberties with kata. I try to stay clear of them. But when I have to I’m more than willing to stand my ground. When that happens they will usually make excuses for how poorly they did that day.

I totaly agree. For me, I'm not a fan.

Just do in your test like you've been doing in class and you'll do just fine.

Way to go. Keep up the hard work.

Question about those self defense classes...
Uechi Kid replied to Menjo's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
People are basically lazy. If they think that they can spend fifty or a hundred dollars on a self-defense class that they will be able to take care of them selves with a minimal amount of work. As we all know, it takes hours and hours of hard work performing a technique properly to make it work in real life. I always told my children that there are no short cuts in life. That is very true with self-defense. -
A new martial artist's first question
Uechi Kid replied to KaratePballer54's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have also found myself doing things I wasn’t able to do before. I work in a grocery store. From time to time when I’m facing the shelves I’ll knock the item on one side or the other of the one I’m facing off the shelve. I use to be able to stop the falling item with my foot (most of the time). Now I usually catch it with my hand. Pretty cool. -
What is the 'deadliest' martial art?
Uechi Kid replied to Sengra's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Well if you really analyze the techniques from most styles they all have some very deadly applications. (IF TAUGHT CORRECTLY). -
Sparring is the sport aspect of karate that's why it looks so much like boxing. If you were to really defend yourself with techniques from kata it wouldn't look at all like boxing. I think that what we learn when we spar is very important, but it isn't the creators of our styles had in mind to defend them selves and their families.

Everything you can learn might just help in a real fight some day. Not only that, you’re in high school. It will be cool and you’ll probably have fun and get in really good shape

I recently bought a new Gi, A “Meijin”. It’s as good of quality as my Shureido. Go to. https://www.dragon-tsunami.org or https://www.dragon-tsunami.org/Products/Pages/Meijin.htm

Yes Kata can and should be a good work out. Oh, and keep up the hard work!!!
-
Yes, it’s a very cool technique. Very basic but as you said Mawashi Uke has so many different applications. Maybe that’s why it is the predominate block in Uechi Ryu.
-
There is no dishonor in losing at sparing to a girl. Girls can be sneaky and fast. Practice, practice, practice.

Don't wash it. A dirty belt from training is a sign of hard work. Ware it with pride.

Uechi Ryu, Nine years now. Wow where did the time go?
-
If you are looking for a magazine that looks at the martial arts from a traditional point of view, take a look at "CLASSICAL FIGHTING ARTS". I think it's the best.
-
It was very similar with me when I first started. I was always saying the names of the technique in Japanese. Thinking about the workout from the night before and looking forward to the workout that night. It's mellowed out a bit but after ten years I still think about it allot during any given day.

Congratulations. Promotion without a test. you must be doing something right. That doesn't happen very often. Keep up the hard work.

Right now my rank kata is Kanchin.
