White Belt (1/10)

  1. A couple weeks back, I remember seeing some type of MMA competition on ESPN (I believe). It was something along the lines of 1 round boxing, 1 round kickboxing, 1 round grappling. If anyone has any info on this competition please let me know. I can't find any info anywhere.
  2. Really weird...I'm in south jersey also looking to do some bjj training and I posted here looking for help about a month ago. I go to school at Rowan U. and was trying to find someone to start teaching classes at the rec center here. From what I've found, there's Ricardo Almedia's school about 40 min north of Rowan, and a Combat Submission Wrestling school about 20 min north of Rowan (both these times are from memory...may be a little off). There are also several places in Philly. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone willing to come to teach at Rowan for a price/circumstances I deemed reasonable. The going rate is about $15/person/class, which is quite tough for a college kid to come up with. Anyway, good luck with the search.
  3. I've pretty much exhausted the options as far as local dojos go. There are a few YMCA's in the area, so my next move is to check them out for classes. After that, I'll start asking around campus for some bjj-ers. If worst comes to worst, I could always train over breaks and then, slowly but surely, start showing other students some stuff. Then, we could get together and roll every once in a while. I am a little bummed out though. I thought the local instructors would be more open to helping us college kids out. Oh well. Thanks for all the replies.
  4. tangsooguy, I need a bjj instructor w/ your mentality...dont charge us too much bc we're all broke..haha. I wish I could just find a nice blue or purple belt looking to make some pocket change. Then, we could get a group together to roll every once in a while. Who's your mom? Maybe I've had her for one of my classes. stl_karateka, Not really looking for it for free, but less than $15 dollars per class per person, ya know? Regarding the liability issue...the gym has open areas available for student use. What I was planning to do was get a group together and bring the instructor here myself, without having to go through the University. That way, all $$ would go directly to the instructor. Thanks for the input.
  5. Our school doesn't charge for space and wouldn't really place restrictions. However, I do understand it's an inconvenience for an instructor. I guess I was just hoping for too much. Thanks for the reply.
  6. I've been looking to bring an instructor to my school's rec center to teach a class or two per week. The problem is they all seem pretty hesitant to do so without asking for a good deal of money. Unfortunately, being college students, we cannot pay $15 dollars per person per class (or guarantee $150 dollars per session) to train. We have a Copoeira (sorry if I mangled the spelling) instructor coming who is asking a mere $5 per person. Any suggestions? Am I being unreasonable regarding cost (I know $15 dollars isn't a bad price, but I thought they'd help us out seeing as how we are students)? I am in the South Jersey area.
  7. Hey guys, recently I've been trying to find an instructor (or one of his higher-ranking students) to teach a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class (or at least submission wrestling or something similar) at the rec center at my college in South Jersey. Unfortunately, most have been fairly unreceptive of the idea, asking for commitments and fees most college students cannot afford to make. So, my question is, hypothetically, how willing would you be to go to a local university once or twice a week to teach and, if you were willing, what would you charge? My second question is to any BJJ practitioners around the South Jersey area: would you be interested in teaching a class at my school (Rowan U.)?
