  1. If you fancy a good laugh, then here's 3 martial arts spoof movies that are pretty funny: Kung Pow Kung Phooey Tongan Ninja The last one is especially good for a spoof movie and the guys in it look like they had a great time making it. I had a MA movie evening with a friend the other day and we watched all 3 of these, as well as 'regular' MA films. We had a great time, especially with the 'Nunchaku Lover' song in Tongan Ninja.
  2. I like Jet Li's old stuff much better than his new (The One was terrible IMO). I watched Hitman the other day - he's quite good in that.
  3. I'm currently writing an assignment about Kill Bill as part of a Hollywood Cinema module for my university degree. If anyone can recommend any good articles, reviews that they've read about KB, then if you could let me have the web addreses then that would be great! Thanks. I'm concentrating on the different genres that are in Kill Bill - action, animation etc etc, so any stuff about that would be greatly appreciated
  4. Dedication and perseverence IMO. Speed, strength, experience and stamin are an added bonus!
  5. Do you know, I think you've got something there Monkey. It'd be interesting to see how many people joined Kung Fu clubs after the release of the Matrix films...
  6. I read a quote once by a famous karate instructor (can't remember who said it, sorry) who said that "there is no hungrier karateka than a brown belt in search of Shodan". I think it's true, too.
  7. Well, I generally do play some MA-related games in my beginners class, to teach things like team work, leadership and also to help develop their gross-motor skills. JEM618, that's a good idea - I might try that. I can't punish the kids for wrongdoing - because they don't. They are always polite and well-behaved in class; they're just bored. It's not my ultimate decision to tell them not to come to class any longer - that's up to my sensei. I think I'm just gonna have to have a word with their parents again; maybe suggest that they take kickboxing, seen as the kids tend to prefer kumite to anything else. I don' think that it was their parents who forced them to start, I think it's more of a case that the children don't like karate now they've joined the club. Well, it's not everyone's cup of tea but I do think that it's unfair for their parents to force these children to keep coming to lessons when they don't want to. Oh well, such is life. You gotta take the rough with the smooth!!
  8. I think that reminding the whole class of the importance of good hygeine is a good idea - sometimes people need reminding of these sort of things, especially as it is getting into warmer weather now. If all else fails then you'll have to take the person aside and have a quiet word with them.
  9. In which style is he a black belt? Where did you find that out?
  10. I'll lend you my binoculars, after I've done with them... I'm off to see Evanescence at Sheffield Arena on the 20th (my birthday in case anyone is interested) and the seats where me & my mates will be are right at the back too. I hate sitting down when bands are playing, I much prefer to be up at the front in a good mosh pit (not that there'll be much moshing at Evanescence I think).
  11. monkey, I love your new signature!
  12. Thanks for the info Delta!
  13. Yeah, climbing Kili was great! I hope you enjoy Mt Kenya - I'd like to climb that, but I haven't got enough money, and probably will need to save up for the next 30 years to be able to afford to go. Just watch out for what anti-Malaria tablets you take - I had the sort where you take 2 types of tablet (one every day and one other once a week). They made me really ill for most of the trip - and standing on the top of the highest mountain in Africa and thinking about being sick all the time is not good fun. :-/ Angelica, you gotta start horseriding if you can - it's soooooo cool. I'd recommend it to anyone. Make sure you do plenty of stretching before your first session, or you'll be walking round in Kibadachi stance for danys to come!!
  14. lol, and be back again in time for tea and crumpets, in a true british fashion....
  15. With how hard some MA masters must be spinning in their graves, it's a wonder the rotation of the earth hasn't been altered! lol Seriously, though, I believe that the majority of deceased MA masters wouldn't recognise much of the current world of martial arts, because of the increase in 'belt-factory' schools and also the breaking awayin some schools from traditional values of martial arts, such as dedication, respect, hard work and perseverence.
  16. Cool. Good clip! Good luck for the tourney Ironberg - don't forget to let us know how you get on.
  17. My dojo is IN a pub! (well, above it actually, if ya wanna be picky...) It's near the M1 too - very easy to get to Andy!! Count me in for a meet-up, wherever in the country. My style is Shotokan, with a bit of Aikido, but I'm not offering to demonstrate anything, 'cos you're probably all better than I am and will kick my butt! The capoeira club sounds like a good plan, Monkey.
  18. I've never had any of the things descibed (Shabu Shabu, Korean BBQ etc etc), but they all sound delicious!
  19. Congratulations on your Silver medal, Cathal!
  20. Good luck with your new direction in training, Delta! Sorry to hear that things are slipping a bit at your TKD school. Now... can you tell stupid ol' me what exactly is SCARS? I've not heard of it before! Thanks.

    HAPPINESS

That's what happens at my dojo - you automatically join when you have your first lesson. Shorinryu Sensei - your comment about showing folks the door reminds me of a Sandan friend who used to have his own club (had to pack it in due to a knee injury). He told me that one time he got all his students to stand up in front of the others and explain why they wanted to learn karate. After the session all those who gave answers such as "I want to learn how to kick people" or "I want to fight" were asked to leave and not return. He lost about a fifth of his students that night, but he says he won't teach those with a bad attitude, only those who are willing to learn and be taught.
  22. Thanks again! It is a little bit of a dorky vid, but at least now I can say I've seen Cuong Nhu in action... I must say from what you've said about it, and from seeing the vid, Cuong Nhu looks like a good style - knowing my luck, though, my nearest school will be about a thousand miles away. :-/
  23. I'd never heard of the 'wave' application of Chinte before; the most common explanation that I've so far heard for the jumps at the end of the kata is that you're jumping over a stick or whip. Interesting!
  24. Hmm, interesting! I've always done Keagi without rotating the supporting foot - I'll have to give Sensei Abe's way a go. The course sounded excellent - I really wish I'd been able to go.
