  1. He's comparing western boxing to Japanese and Korean styles. I can tell you that Japanese and Korean styles are far more similar to each other than to western boxing.
  2. Trust me. The term Karate is accurate enough to make comparisons.
  3. You should instead argue how the style or school trains. I reckon it's quite self-evident to say that Hapkido, Taekwondo and Karate are similar to each other, because they are simply based on the same principles. Korean equivalents were merely derived from the Okinawan arts.
  4. To emphasize one's "rotational" force and to reach out further (basic long fist concept).
  5. Hey! You're completely missing out Choy Lay Fut. I'm quite sure Tai Chi is the most widely spread and known Chinese martial art out there. One of the distinct reasons for its fame is that it is not only favoured by its competency in combat, but it also serves as an excellent way to exercise the body for health benefits. Not involving any physically demanding moves, such as aerial jumps and tornado kicks, it is suitable for all ages. Apart from Tai Chi, I would say that contemporary wushu is increasingly gaining popularity among the young people, but perhaps the traditional arts such as Wing Chun and Choy Lay Fut are still governing the external scene in the west. It depends a lot where you are.
  6. Lee Gar is one of the five families (Choy, Lee, Hung, Lau, Mok) in Southern China that have passed on the great Shaolin heritage. I guess you could do some searching on the internet to find detailed information about the art itself. Many schools incorporate Tai Chi into their curriculum, even though they already teach another primary style.
  7. Greetings, I have been lurking around on these boards for quite a while now and finally decided to create an account to have the privilege to participate in various discussions. My martial experience started with traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu and Judo under my father, until a few years ago when I began my journey in the magnificent art of Choy Lay Fut. I am still continuing my Judo practice along with my Shaolin art. I enjoy reseaching martial arts (especially Chinese) and reading about their history - primarily Choy Lay Fut. Take care and train hard.
