  1. Anybody want to recommend an ear guard? The Asics ones looked decent. Thanks
  2. One thing I've found is that several bjj submissions are illegal in judo. That's a good or a bad thing, depending on your perspective.
  3. I asked the same question a while ago. I followed JohnnyS's advice and started out training bjj and began judo several months later. It worked out for me. Judo helps my stand up. Bjj helps my groundwork.
  4. Does anybody know anything about Master Toddy, Ben Garcia, or Kit Cope? I was wondering how respected they are in muay thai.
  5. Did anyone see this? I caught the tail end yesterday. I was wondering what y'all thought about it. It comes on at 6pm EST today if you missed it.
  6. Hey all, I'm competing in a gi tournament in a couple weeks. This is my first tournament. I've been doing bjj only for a few months, so I'm not sure how ready I am. My instructor seems to think I'm ready, but I'm not so sure. Do you all have any takedowns/submissions that you'd recommend? I'm going to spend the time up until the tournament just drilling a few basic moves from each position. I need to work on my guard passing and sweeps especially. Also, are there any basic things that I need to avoid (e.g. don't push up from the bottom, don't give the other guy a straight arm, etc.) or look for (e.g. guy pushes up from the bottom, guy gives me straight arm, etc.)? Thanks
  7. I guess I should've checked the older threads: http://karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=11676&sid=9a8bccf368490683c18a54cdb12c67db I actually did a search before posting, but that thread didn't come up. I'd still appreciate any other recommendations.
  8. Do any of you use rash guards when you roll? Any brands you'd recommend? Links to cheap, good rash guards would also be appreciated.
  9. The basics book is another $20, isn't it? I think the Master Text alone is $70. The package is $90. Which videos do you recommend?
  10. I'm thinking about getting one of Simco's books. I'm not sure whether to get "The Master Text" or "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Basics." I've only been training for a month, so I'm thinking the basic book might be better. The bjj.org review stated that the master text was for beginners to intermediate practicioners, so maybe I should get that one. Anybody who has seen both books want to make a recommendation? Also, anybody know where I can get a second-hand copy of these books. They're pretty pricey. Well, the Master Text is anyway. No luck on ebay.
  11. Um, this might be irrelevant to the discussion at hand, but I'm just curious. Why did he throw one of his fans? I always thought it was a good idea not to injure one's fans. Maybe I'm just naive.
  12. Thanks for the replies, all. I don't know what keza-ketame is, but I'll probably find out eventually.
  13. I'm going to start training BJJ on Monday. The classes are going to be held at the local YMCA. The YMCA also offers judo classes for pretty cheap. I was considering taking the judo classes as well to supplement my BJJ training. Do you think this is a bad idea? Will the judo classes confuse me when I'm doing BJJ or vice versa? Thanks
