bjj for self defense
RAZOR replied to aznkarateboi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I have to say i agree with Martial AstistI think he is spot on and the stand up fight usually happens before the ground bit so its best to know good stand up as well. -
Advice on grappling system please
RAZOR replied to RAZOR's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
DOesnt JJ include all the stand up stuff as well. I dont really want to mix that with my Muay Thai because i think that wont work for me. The ground stuff would be good though Sambo is an interesting idea i will check that out and try and find out some more. Thanks for the input as usual Karate_Woman -
Hi, I dont post on this forum cos i dont do any grappling but im hoping to start soon. I need some advice though. I have been doing Muay Thai for about 5 years coming on to six and im quite good at it. I more than happy with as a self defence for stand up fighting but as you know it has no graplling. I live in London but there are only a couple of BJJ schools here and they take ages to get too and are over crowded as there are only two. Question: If im going to do a grappling system but not BJJ which one is most effective for self defence. I need grappling only reaally and no wierd systems that hardly even exist. I need something i can find and do and with which i will be able to hold my own if i get taken down. Thanks

Ring the closest thing to the street?
RAZOR replied to Kirves's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes finished, I have to say i agree that if it works for a cop or a bouncer it should be a valid technique. The ring is useful and gives an excellent preparation for real fights. I would still maintain that alot of people are going to be less resistent to a cop but in certain areas this is not the case. So yeah, be cop and kick everyones a$$ and then win a belt or the other way round and err thats it -

Sorry i see your point. The real experience of people using them has to be the best test. I would say that there is probably going to be a lack of determination against fighting a cop or a bouncer because of the position of authority they hold, the back up they have and the consequences of your actions. Its best for people who study MA and have used it to give their opinions but they are likely to be biased. Difficult really but if it works in the ring i would say it works in the street. Now ive typed this im kind of changing my mind back to the ring again. Ummmm im going to open MS Word and have an argument with myself about this and i'll let you know the outcome. -

Good topic and one that needs raising in light of recent debates. I think the ring is the closest thing to a real fight as you can get as it puts you against an unknown opponent who really is trying to beat the living daylights out of you. This is as close as you can reasobaly expect to get to a real fight. The examples of being a cop or bouncer are the real thing so i guess they arent valid. Going out and picking fights etc is also the real thing. So to get as close to a fight but not actually be having a real fight i.e. someone can stop the fight or give up, you have to go to the ring. I would like to add that there are very few systems that do this. If you want to learn how to fight for real then you have to go this route, not wanting to upset anyone but i know it will, there is no alternative. Going in the ring will always make you better and i see it at my club when someone has their first fight , full contact sparring suddenly becomes easier and they do more and react better, sparring seems slower etc. -
OK I agree to but as i do Muay Thai I have a question for MuayThai Fighter. Where is this link between Thai Boxing and Pankration 2000 years ago or whatever. Before the Romans I think he is getting it wrong.

Yeah, good luck. Dont stres too much.

I agree with Karate woman. What i have trouble with is that either these points on stance have just been raised in which case why werent they from day one. If this has been an issue all the time why wasnt it sorted ages ago? And if its is still a problem why are you being put forward for the grading. I see no point in putting someone up for a grading if the sensei is not convinced they will pass. Not saying it should be a breeze but also whats the rush. Why jump out of your depth. Get the techniques right then go for your grading and get it comfortably Then you know you are at the correct grade. Dont just scrape through. Good Luck any way but i would be looking else where. You obviously want to train hard but i think you are recieving the wrong attention. I am close to the point of starting my own Muay Thai gym, hopefully next year and i can say i would not make life so un-necessarily hard for my students. I would make it hard in a different way.

TOP UN ARMED MARTIAL ARTS I CAN THINK OF
RAZOR replied to MuayThai Fighter's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I dont understand how Thai and Greek culture crossed. There is no way the Thais would have shown the Greeks Muay Thai. Ive looked into Thai history a bit but i have never heard of them teaching it to foreigners. In fact its only in the last century that it has been noticed and i think this is when it was added to Pankration. From what I understand Pankration is like any other intelligent system, it changes with the times. Not trying to offend just dont see the link at all. -
Yes that sounds more like it a balance somewhere in between is best. I think this scary stuff is a bit of a power trip and i really dont think stuff like that is acceptable. Respect is earned not forced.

Well I looked on Pankration.com as well as other sights and cant find Muay Thai. I think you got that one wrong. Greek and Thai culture have never crossed. Please show me some evidence of this. -
I feel this is couter productive though as you dont quite know where you stand but this is common in Kararte I think a more balanced approach is better, its up to you. Good luck i see you are in Englad , me too im in london. I found it hard to stick with Krate in the end and changed to Muaythai which im much happier with. No gradings and its consistent, and no bullying and shouting.

Thanks for the quote that was interesting, learnt something new. Still not sure that what MTFighter is on about with Pankration being MT and BJJ.
